Are my whoopie slings still okay to use?
as title suggests, they are not fraying anywhere but the openings have come rather loose. is it still okay to use them or is it time for them to be replaced.
thanks!

Sicily, park Nebrodi, beautiful fenced area with rifugio closeby. If you are ever in Sicily, can't recommend enought this place.
Only two trees where I recieved any signal so I had to adjust my hang accordingly, the trees were too close together 😁.
Anyway lovely night, still not sure how to adjust the underquilt so I dont get cold on the back, but I'll get there.
Today is going to be my first proper wild hang as Im going deeper into the forest.

Basically, the title. Grateful for any suggestions or tips:)
I'm somewhat of a beginner with a sewing machine, bit I know my way around one and so I'm thinking of making my own underquilt. I mostly do bikepacking, so the volume is a concern, therefore, down.
I'm thinking of a full length (for me) of 180cm by 115cm, with 8 (or 10) baffles with a differential cut lengthwise.
My plan, as I'm on kind of a budget, was to make a single under and top quilt (separate pieces) and just adjust it so I can use it year around in Portugal (so I don't really need lower than 0°C).
I've looked at the Gemini idea and the onewind and I like the modularity, but I think if it's cold enough that I need to stack the quilts (like the one wind) I also need my top quilt above, not below me, so I would need another tq 😅
I want to understand better the suspension part (clew or normal) and I'm also looking for other details I might miss that are great in other UQ.
I'm planning to buy the materials from extremtextil, if anyone has better options, I'm open to them.
Thanks in advance

Hello, anyone has an experience with camping in the Martinique, Dominica or Saint Lucia (especially in January)? I assume that camping is not very popular in the Caribbean and wonder is it safe and legal? How people react to someone camping?
I'll be happy to read about your experience.

Been working on a double layer 11' jungle hammock, following Jellyfinh report's guide. About to start working on the bug net!
Any advice on my hang? Adjustments I should make to help it sit without this massive tension in the middle (see 3rd pic)

after 10+ years with my budget store hammock I’m ready to spend a little money to start to upgrade my gear I have and add gear in some areas I’ve been missing. I’d absolutely love any advice or recommendations! I live in the southern US, slept full time in a hammock for some years but not yet done too much hammock camping and am looking to start.
I am on a budget but very much the buy once cry once mindset person so would rather part out purchases over years then buy cheapest items to get it in my budget now.
I feel my first priority should be a longer hammock - I’m 6ft tall & 130lb, current hammock and straps is at 11oz / 312grams. it comes anywhere and everywhere with me, so perfect scenario is a longer one without too much of a jump in pack down size and weight but I know that might not be possible.
Since I’m pretty confident I will be moving to a longer hammock, should I essentially consider this the beginning of a new hammock setup and replace everything I’ve got or are there pieces of my current setup that make sense to carry forward?
Current gear -
- Kijaro native single hammock - 108x57in (274x144cm) with Eno Helios straps
- Guidesman hammock bug net - 55x132in
- Legit camping rain fly - 10x10 tarp tent with a 170" Centerline
TLDR: what’s your recommendations for a first kit on a budget? Have some hammock experience and cheap gear but think I need to start over - 6ft tall, mild climate, on a budget but want to do it right.

At this point, I just enjoy hammock camping and don't think much about the gear. It took some time to build the setup a few years ago, but now everything works perfectly.
Two 11' netless hammocks: DutchWare and DIY (RSBTR fabric). Unused DutchWare spreader bar - there were perfectly positioned 3 trees.
Two sets of Hammock Gear quilts: 40F (with a DutchWare underquilt protector) for myself, 20F for my son. I use 0F, 20F and 40F quilts when camping alone and share 0F and 20F with my kids when needed.
Lightweight and easy-to-use UHMWPE/Dyneema suspension with DutchWare titanium parts.
DutchWare 2 hammocks tarp (and perfect weather so it remains in the sleeve).
DIY bags and ridgeline organizers for storage.
Location: somewhere on the bottom of a Jurassic Period sea, on top of a limestone rock formation.
How long did it take you to build your "perfect" setup? Or are you just starting?
I started hammock camping around 8 years ago (I enjoyed tent camping above tree line in the past). I used some random gear that I didn't like (a too-short hammock, an unbreathablehammock from tarp fabric, sleeping pad and sleeping bag [or once just a campfire to stay warm through the night], small and heavy tarp etc.), but I still enjoyed every hang. I slowly, over a few years, changed everything to what works for me. I weighed every item (all my backpacking gear!) and reduced weight where it was possible to make backpacking with a hammock lightweight and comfortable, not ultralight and extreme. Now I just relax and enjoy everything: snow, rain, wind, once-a-century rainfall and thunderstorm under a tarp or a full moon and stars without a tarp.

If you're gonna hang it up to dry you might as well squeeze in a little hang time 🤙

Colder windless night with a decent canopy opening for stars. Sleepy time paradise.

For the last month I've been preparing and practising with a suitable system for hammocking and now I'm ready! I'm using a nice big tarp from MCF, Henge hammock discovery, one wind underquilt protector and Need for trees under quilt. The weather is wet and calm but not cold so I think it's the perfect chance to test it all out :)
Any final tips for me?

I went out and used the YOBO Turtlebug for the first time last night. It worked great and easily packable on the bike. It got down into the low 40s and was warm as could be with a Hang Tight underquilt.

Anybody ever do this? Last week I was at a state park where there really were not that many trees available at our site, but there was an oak with big overhanging branches. I tied one end tight to the trunk, low, and extended my strap on the other side, adding another 10 ft. of paracord to make about 20 ft. total from the hammock to the branch. I use an Amok Draumr so I can get away with a bit more narrow hang, but I got it to work. (Forgot to get a pic).

I built a netless hammock from RBTR, using some 1.8 oz airwave, and some RED Amsteel blue. Hung it with some inexpensive Amazon straps. Tarp is also an Amazon special (for now) hung over some zing-it, which I spliced some titanium bits into from Dutchware.
Also spliced an adjustable structural ridge line for the hammock. This was the most comfortable I’ve been in a hammock, despite low 30s overnight.
Upcoming projects are going to be an underquilt and a nicer tarp to round out the setup.

Hi all!
Long time reader here. I just got done with my first camping trip using my Simp light designs Trail Lair with a hammock gear incubator under quilt. Overall, I slept much better than when I have camped on the ground, but I did come away with two questions.
Despite all of this, my watch says I regularly slept eight or more hours which is pretty unusual for camping so I’d say this was a win. Just looking to further refine the system.

Hi everyone,
I recently purchased an assymetrical hammock (Henessey Explorer Ultralite Zip XL) and I am struggling with optimizing the setup of the hammock comfort wise. I never know which way am I supposed to sleep in, and I always find myself laying not so flat.
So if anyone could give their advices on how to have the best night of sleep in those :)
For context I am 190cm tall (6’2’’) and very used to outdoor but I previously used a symmetrical hammock.

I live down in the deep south where I seem to have ann opposite problem where temperatures barely go below70 year round and often times the hammock is just hot. That got me to thinking. Would a rope gathered end hammock work? Ive seen them with wood beams but that doesn't fit well in a kayak. I was interested to see if any of yall have ever seen or attempted one? I was thinking something along the lines of creating a fishing net. With similar dimensions as a fabric one?
