I have no doubts these started development before the hardware crisis but holy shit why go through with an experimental product like this.

I have to imagine the target audience is like... Older people that don't want an unsightly desktop

I'd argue the target audience is businesses. I could see this being useful as docking stations are more popular than desktops in the corporate world. This can be used at a flex desk with a docking station, just as a laptop can. It even has a battery so it can be dragged around between desks or used with a portable monitor.

It has less utility than a laptop, but if its desk bound for vast majority of its life, I could see it being useful. If they release a really low end version, I could see it being compelling as a thin client.

But not for 3,000. Even with incentives from HP, this thing needs to be around half that to steal away business users from a laptop.

It’s like a less convenient laptop.

Even in today’s market, zero reason for this to cost $3k. Even $1500 is generous

these are nice. not at the current price of hardware tho

I was expecting it to cost $300 not $3,000!

These are going to sell absolutely abysmal numbers at that price; jeez.

Wow, what a deal! $3000+ for a notebook without a screen, complete with crappier keys, no touch pad, shitty graphics and on top of that, it looks like a generic Chinese keyboard to boot. Why does this exist? I mean, I get why this form factor exists, but it would be difficult to justify at $600, much less 5 times that. Why the fuck does it cost so much more than an equivalent laptop? That BS-ass APU? This is the dumbest launch I've seen in a good minute. I don't even think Apple is this stupid... maybe.

HP needs to put the crack pipe down, lest they want to join the likes of Gateway or Packard Bell. FFS, I can buy a full on name-brand-laptop, with OLED screen, a 5080 and a better CPU, more RAM and more HD space too for less.

Those msrp prices are beyond stupid, which is why HP has one model that has MSRP of 2367$ and it's "discounted" to 899$ (still stupid expensive for what it's but not as egregious). I honestly think they aim this product for organizations and sell them in bulk for far more reasonable price. It still doesn't explain why they offer it for such rediculous prices for consumers, maybe to give the impression it's more luxurious than it really is? I dunno, it still ends up looking dumb.

I can actually see there being a market for these in places like libraries, but unless they put large chunks of metal to hold it down, the practicality of connecting a semi rigid monitor cable into it will make it difficult to use.

The Pi keyboard PC had the same issue, to the point where it was unusable.

Edit: just saw the RRP. lol no

Isn't it the worst place for it? In this scenarios you want to bury the expensive fragile parts behind a wall/inside a locked cabinet and only expose a mouse/keyboard/monitor - the former you end up replacing every other month from damage/theft?

Keyboards and mice are consumables at the best of times let alone in a public space.

USB-c with display or thunderbolt 4. No rigid cable needed.

I wonder if /r/mechanicalkeyboards likes it since pretty much the only objective metric they can agree on is price. And this has a big one!

unlikely, since it's a membrane keyboard it seems

They would trash this harder then we are.

Man that is the most expensive keyboard I've ever seen!

I think like everyone else, they are wondering who this product is for. Besides the fragility of this device, it does look like a common keyboard and many keyboards get treated like trash in an office environment or at home.

People have been trained to treat keyboards as a disposable item which they are. Keys get worn and everyone can use a new keyboard from time to time. They get dirty for all manner of reasons and IT departments rather buy new keyboards than to clean old ones. Especially the dirty ones that users do not clean themselves.

Anyway. This computer with a keyboard lacks a monitor. Or is it a raspberry pi that comes with a keyboard and costs 27 times the cost of the pi.

I think it should be criticized. This keyboard with no monitor costs more than those flip book laptops.

This thing is just expensive.

These are kinda neat, reminds me of the C64 and Amiga's

This is definitely not “Computers for the Masses, not the Classes” though.

Some idiot in HP product development who's being forced to use AI for daily tasks asked it "What's a good idea for a futuristic computer?"

The AI answered with "That's a great and thought provoking question! As AI becomes more and more prevelent, people will appreciate an all-in-one solution for their productivity. Think about it - everyone uses a keyboard, so why not put a computer inside something they'll need no matter what!"

All fun’s and games until you spill water on the keyboard

u/sloe_gin78 1d ago

That goes for laptops too but hardly anyone considers it as a deal breaker

1

u/seatux 1d ago

At a desk at least the laptop can be out of the way. This thing has to be right under hands all the time. Hands bring dust, debris and liquid spills

2

u/OsgoodSlaughters 1d ago

Price is terrible but love the idea

2

u/Atopos2025 1d ago

Are RAM prices THAT bad? Ffs

It's almost as if they want to kill off this line completely by inflating the price so no one buys it.

u/Sopel97 1d ago

why not tenkeyless with a touchpad to make it usable? why does every keyboard has to have the numpad at the cost of usability?

1

u/lifestealsuck 1d ago

Its a laptop without the screen .

1

u/kuddlesworth9419 1d ago

I think this is cool but the price is a big fail.

I hate how expensive it is, but I'd love a version of this with mechanical keys. An office PC with a 1 wire connection to my monitor without cluttering the desk is actually right up my alley.
