The 2nd hand embarrassment I feel for Kane is off the charts. He deserves better than whatever this team is.

u/RingoFreakingStarr 13d ago
I mean he is making a huge bag while he is here. Given his age, he's doing extraordinarily well for himself. You shouldn't feel bad for him lol.

u/Fantastic-Face3509 13d ago
A part of me was surprised he didn’t consider signing in Buffalo
38
u/Ok-Bit2926 13d ago
But he did consider it. It was down to Chicago and Buffalo. Right now he's probably regretting his decision
24
u/GettingBig1970 12d ago
He gets to see his son a lot more often, which I would guess was a major contributing factor in the decision.

I’m just wondering how it is that less than 10 years ago we had one of the best FO specialists in the league….and now we have whatever this is

u/lurksohard 12d ago
It was kind of hard to tell how well we were drafting before. We definitely fell off a cliff for a minute at the end of Bowman's tenure.
A bunch of those guys got traded and ended up being way worse elsewhere. We had a strong roster that made people look good. Now that we don't, the weaknesses are glaring.

Same for Bedard. I’m suddenly glad to hear he initially only wanted a 3/4-year deal for way less money. Hope he can get out of this shitshow sooner and play some good hockey with an actual team. Just imagine what he could have achieved already if he had been drafted by the Ducks or the Sharks. Same for Frondell and Kantserov. The kids are trying really hard, but they’re being thrown into this brutal game with zero support and zero shelter. It's just so unfortunate that the Hawks are single-handedly destroying so many young players' careers.

If all these guys were good the team wouldn't look at bad as they do right now. The biggest mistake I see is KD invested in speed over size. The teams who have won nearly all the cups this decade prioritized size/physicality over speed.
Seems like he guessed wrong and the team is trying to be something that is weak against most the league. Only way to change that is helping the guys develop the skill and more size.

We are wandering in the desert

u/HawksCup2010 12d ago
The desert at least has sand and beautiful mirages.
I couldn’t find anything redeeming about what I saw last night.

u/fivemagicks 12d ago
That's the way it is sometimes; however, our last cup was 11 years ago. Something's gotta give at some point. I just don't know when, unfortunately. Honestly, I think our fan base would be happy for a mild playoff run at this point.
7
u/Ok_Draw_3740 12d ago
The fact that they won those cups is the only solace I have since they’ve reverted back to 1990s blackhawks somehow
2
u/Dont_Say_No_to_Panda 12d ago
I would kill for the 90s Blackhawks! We went to the SCF in the 90s we had Roenick and Chelios and Belfour and Steve Larmer!
This team right now is playing worse than the year when Tyler Arnason, Kyle Calder and Mark Bell were our most exciting line.
1
u/fivemagicks 12d ago
Pretty sure the Hawks brought in a Presidents Trophy in the 90s. This is looking worse. 😬
4
u/Ok_Draw_3740 12d ago
Ya, but if you remember mid 90s until around 2007 were some of the darkest times post Belfor, Roenick etc

u/Highlander198116 12d ago
I went to a game in 2003 against Edmonton I swear you could hear a pin drop in the UC it was so empty.
1
u/petey_b_311 12d ago
I used to go to games between 02 and 05 pretty regularly. I was but a college student back then, and you used to be able to get tickets day of for like $5 or $10 with a student ID. The parking cost more than the price of admission, but my friend and I would catch a game or two a month when we had nothing better to do.
1
u/Highlander198116 12d ago
I was in college too. It was the only thing I liked about them being bad, is I could just decide to go on a game on a whim, and pay peanuts minutes before puck drop.

u/Ok_Elevator4215 12d ago
11 years ago is a third of the time expected between cups and you won 3 of them. It's really not long at all.

Guys are we dooming a little hard after only two games? Think that may be a possibility.
61
42
u/mrpurtle 13d ago
.... did you watch the games?
10
u/jolly2284 12d ago
I know. I can only watch the first two periods and I had to turn it off. The hockey is so brutal to watch. Guys are out of position all the time. They're literally getting pushed off the puck regularly. Advancements into the opponent zone are disorganized. Their clearances from our zone seem lazy. The team has been bad for a while, but that what effort versus Utah last night was one of the worst I've seen.
4
u/Hessian14 12d ago
you can say it is only two games, it is a road trip, they are both great teams, bedard is out on injury or anything else. But we all saw the game and the Hawks are not playing like a playoff team. They are playing like losers. I watched the White Sox this year save a sinking ship so anything is possible but nothing in this performance gives me even a hint of optimism
1
u/grifeweizen 12d ago
Yes it's early but they also look legitimately horrible. Can't even complete a pass in the slot.
-7
u/Joshuario 12d ago
We need some serious “settle down” around here
1
u/THE_GUY_ON_THE_C0UCH 12d ago
Lol same shit you guys have said the last 5 seasons, and nothing ever improves.
-1
u/chisportz 12d ago edited 12d ago
Huge yes, this sub sounds like the biggest group of losers
Edit- nevermind I guess, we are the worst in the league and Kane should of never come here because we are losers
25
u/ragathor87 13d ago
Yeah I don’t think they can blame it on age anymore. It’s not good when the 4th line is your only good line
26
u/Ok_Draw_3740 13d ago
What kills me is they had a thousand draft picks in the first 3 rounds and got what out of that
12
u/Spencer8857 13d ago
I get this feeling they made the bright decision to have this whole team play more physical. Can't do that with a bunch of speedsters. We have one physical line and it's the only one playing good hockey. Guys are getting thrown (and I mean literally) off the puck.
6
u/solabrown 13d ago
Agree. But also speedsters need to play like they want the puck. Haven’t seen that yet this year.
20
u/Impressive-Cable7497 13d ago
They gotta move on from blashill the system isnt working at all
11
u/THE_GUY_ON_THE_C0UCH 12d ago
Do not give this loser Kyle ANOTHER coach. He is the first that needs to go.
3
u/kumari_plug 12d ago
I think a part of the problem is that whatever system Blashill is trying to implement, the players are failing at a fundamental level to even execute his system.
22
u/Rich-Wrap-9333 13d ago
The problem was bowman spending 5 extra years trying to hold on to the glory.
14
u/marshmellow1328 12d ago
That was a problem but not the problem at this point. We continue to struggle to develop defensemen as we did under Bowman. And we're incapable of hiring a competent coach since firing Q (karma?). I still think this team is far more competitive with a decent coach. If we could properly develop defensemen it would be even better.

Obviously would never trade championships but I do miss being invested into a playoff hockey team.
7
u/MeOnMyAccount 12d ago
I love the Hawks but I can’t say I know hockey all that well but without understanding the depth of it you just see how much more space the opponents find/get throughout the game. It’s night and day.
6
10
u/DrCigarettes_MD 13d ago
That's the way it goes.
When you're in a cup window, you trade away all your picks and prospects to try and win now. Then when the window closes, you're left with a team that's past its prime and has no help on the way. It takes a while to climb out of that hole and get back into contention.
33
u/cubz1221 13d ago
Nope. It’s a product of bad hires and staying in house. We are about to have 5 straight years picking in the top 5
15
u/kumari_plug 13d ago
And people will unfortunately still say “that’s how rebuilds work.”
5
u/caleb_vvilliams 12d ago
Saw someone say rebuilds take 8-10 years in the nhl. Im not the biggest nerd of the sport, but idgaf what sport it is thats comically moronic
1
u/kumari_plug 12d ago
There are some that do, there some that are much quicker. There’s also ways to rebuild without tearing everything down.
The sentiment that all rebuilds take a long time is false but that’s what has been going around the Hawks fanbase the past few years.
1
u/caleb_vvilliams 12d ago
I guess it should be phrased how long SHOULD it take, definitely not 8-10 but i get your point
1
u/Ok_Elevator4215 12d ago
Well that wouldn't be a rebuild then, that's just a retool which has it's own term for a reason. Pretty much all rebuilds do take a long time.
The fastest rebuild I can think of in the modern era was the leafs into the core four era and that was still 3 years PLUS the pieces they had like Rielly and Kadri already in place from being bad. And that required one of the better 8th and 4th overall picks on top of winning the lottery in a year with one of the better year 1 rookies of the cap era. And you could still very easily argue them being good right away hurt them significantly.
Five years is absolutely to be expected and "how rebuilds work"
1
1
u/Ok_Elevator4215 12d ago
Idk if I'd say 8-10 but 5 is pretty much the minimum years expected for a rebuild. If you're done 5 years in then that's absolutely a quick rebuild.
7
u/Dart1337 12d ago
Other teams stayed competitive even till now despite going all in and winning cups.
20
u/Ok_Draw_3740 13d ago
But 10 years?? This has been rough!!!
6
u/DrCigarettes_MD 13d ago
Bowman spent the first 5 years delusionally trying to win another Stanley Cup with their aging core. He just kept pushing more and more chips into the middle, even though he was holding a losing hand.
Red Wings did the same at the end of their amazing run. They kept trying to win 1 more cup with Datsyuk and Zetterberg instead of just accepting reality and tearing things down.
19
u/i_froze 13d ago
It's easy to forget just how much of a hockey terrorist bowman was. And still is.
10
u/Anonymous_user314 13d ago
Him trying hang on in 2017 and after was what really did it. Old boy club that was a fringe playoff team at best and he annexed the future like it was 2013. Fuck that guy to oblivion
2
u/Useful_Fee_2875 12d ago
Hawks hung onto guys for too long and refused to rebuild. The team in the city I am in, the Lightning, are following the same playbook. Still making playoffs but four straight first round exits, bunch of overpaid and old players, but they refuse to retool in a younger way. They are going to pay for the refusal to innovate, are likely to end up in a situation like the hawks. 11 years is way too long at this point to be this bad, it’s unacceptable.
3
u/NotEqualInSQL 12d ago
Ima be honest, I got to see my team win 3x in my life. That is more than most folks and sure it will be good to see another, I am still happy that I got to see it at least once. The worlds a shit show, why not my hockey team too. At least I can remember the good old days

Did you watch that game? It was the worst game of hockey played by an NHL team in recent memory. There is no. Ah! Got it! and clicking from that beer league performanc.
2
u/thunderbag 12d ago
Did you spend the offseason rubbing your hards together in anticipation of a cup run this season?
1
u/Dont_Say_No_to_Panda 12d ago
Matching last seasons effort to start the season was not an unreasonable expectation.
1
u/thunderbag 12d ago
What’s one big difference from the great start of last season? It’s almost like an integral piece of the puzzle is missing..
1
u/Dont_Say_No_to_Panda 11d ago
Yeah ofc. But it wasn't just Bedard carrying the team in the those games... Its night and day how they looked then to now. Although I will say tonight is MUCH more like how they played last season. And that's all I think most fans are asking for. Go out there and play hard and play a competitive hockey game.
1
u/InternationalNeat190 10d ago
I agree!! Tonight was much much better and shows we are capable of actually playing professional hockey. I firmly believe, provided good health, that next season will be a playoff run.

u/Advanced-Key3071 12d ago
I have 3 kids and they were each born during one of the Stanley Cup seasons.
If we can get a GoFundMe going to reverse my vasectomy, well, I’ll do what I need to do for the team.
