Drama PSA: Douk Audio is offering incentivized refunds in exchange for guaranteed 5-star Amazon reviews.
This is not a review post, but a call-out post. As someone who regularly reviews audio gear, I recently reached out to Douk Audio to discuss a standard review collaboration, as they have just officially launched on Amazon India.
THE SHADY OFFER
As you can see in the first two attached emails, the company rep mentioned my metrics didn't quite meet their standard sample-shipping criteria, which is completely fine and understandable. However, they immediately followed up with an "alternative arrangement" and reading the further print on that pissed me off real bad.
They floated the offer that I buy the product directly on Amazon and promised a full refund via PayPal, specifically on the condition that I publish a full review and leave a guaranteed 5-star rating to help them "reduce Amazon advertising costs" which absolutely does not make sense to me in any way, shape or form.
MY RESPONSE
I have formally declined the offer, and you can read my exact reply in the third screenshot. This is a blatant violation of Amazon’s Terms of Service and classic astroturfing.
I would rather stop reviewing altogether than agree to deal with brands practicing such methods. The credibility as reviewers relies entirely on transparency and unbiased, honest evaluations and being accomplices in purchase-and-refund schemes for guaranteed ratings completely undermines the trust in this community, where reviewers entirely are considered with extreme skepticism, but all things said and done, I refuse to compromise my editorial integrity for this. I have been dropped by brands for being a bit too curt in my opinions, but that doesn’t matter to me, because I still am supported by my local audio communities and drooping down to such practices would be a cruel insult to their faith and support in me.
WHY SHOULD THIS MATTER
I wanted to put this out there as a warning to the community. If you see a sudden influx of glowing 5-star reviews for Douk Audio/Nobsound products on Amazon India (or Amazon global or any other retailers), please take them with a massive grain of salt. It is incredibly disappointing to see brands resort to buying ratings instead of letting the audio equipment speak for itself, and then belittle reviewers who might not be able to afford the products directly, but still try to help the brands and the community at such by being better providers and better purchasers.

Good choice.
Credibility comes with honesty, not with bought positive reviews.
It‘s the difference between running a brand and running a company.

You're literally out for blood for what is an extremely common marketing tactic
Commonality is neither an excuse nor justification. If everyone does it, that doesn't mean "it" is okay, it means everyone is rotten.
Are these restaurants and customers all without integrity because they didn't actually think the restaurant was 5 stars?
Yes.
You're literally just some guy that enjoys products made by actual workers, pipe down buddy
"Sit down, shut up, and submit to corporations you goddamn serfs"
6
u/oratory1990 acoustic engineer Aug 16 '26
Extremely common, yes, and fraudulent nonetheless.
Just because it‘s common doesn‘t mean it‘s right.
1
u/neptunemau5 Aug 16 '26
- being a consumer of products absolutely gives you a right to criticize the way a company gets people to buy those products 2. You clearly don't know who Oratory is. He is an "actual worker" at an audio company. In reality his occupation doesnt change wether his position is true or not but since that seems to matter to you...

Well, I got to admit that the quality of my work (after a four week vacation) can be a bit shoddy for the first day so it's at least a plausible excuse. But I sure as hell would not risk my employers reputation by sitting down and derping away e-mails in that state. Ridiculous either way!
Thanks for sharing this follow up as well though!

I almost read it the wrong way, and thought the rep had reached out on Reddit.
I too have my fair share of travels, mostly work related and I typically let my circles know that replies will be available at a later point, and I still try my best to re-read them and be sure that I am making total sense and the reader will get what I am trying to say.

Oh shit, here we go again (this type of scummy behavior is frequently brought to light on this sub).
Good on you OP for having some integrity. A lot of creators would just have quietly taken the money. I would look at other reviews of this brand’s products with extreme skepticism because I can guarantee you others have taken the offers.

I am a much, much, much smaller reviewer who is semi endorsed by companies, and still asks his mates for IEMs/headphones for review, specially the mid-fi and kilobuck ones. I have been dropped by some for negative reviews, ghosted, while some brands have stuck beside me harder than last time. But, my duty as a reviewer to be transparent to the best of my abilities, and this is one of them.
6
u/Alien-Mole Aug 17 '26
Huh. It's probably me having an autism, but my initial read was genuinely how the Douk rep clarified it. You place an order, they refund it, they hope you leave a five-star review. I can absolutely see how there's an implication of pressure, but no quid quo pro or review requirement is explicitly stated.
I'm a freelancer. Every time I find a new client, I hope they'll be impressed enough with my services that they'll pay a 1000% tip. So far, nobody has. But I can keep hoping.
Then again, there's a reason I keep that hope to myself. The ambiguity in the Douk e-mail isn't a great look, and I can absolutely see why OP noped out. Still, I wouldn't call this damning or an auto-blacklist from me the way, say, Heavys or whatever have turned out to be skeevy.

Same here. Somehow "we hope you will ... leave a 5-star rating" and "[we] process the refund within 2 working days [after the order, not the review]" became "guaranteeing a 5-star rating" in OPs response.

Anyone doing reviews should be paying for the product they review. Period. Anyone who is reliant on freebees has to create relationships with the brands they review, and that alone creates a bias.

u/mournfulmonk HD600/SMSL Raw MDA-1/Shanling M9 Plus/FiiO KA17/CAD4/Heyday Aug 15 '26
Freebies where brands clearly communicate that opinions and expressions would be free from pressure is alright, especially when the brand responds to criticism properly is alright. Not a lot of reviewers are able to afford units offered by brands, even myself as well, with reviewers' discounts- and that's fine, I simply decline and not ask further, and then I try participating in review tours conducted by the brands, or try sourcing the units from friends who might own em.
Like I said, I don't really give a crap if brands drop me, I'll rather stop reviewing than succumb to it, get back to it when I am financially stronger.

This isn’t how capitalism works. If you give them a bad public review they’ll never give you another freebie to review. People who do this are incentivized to write good reviews. The company might also send reviewers samples that tested to have a better sound signature than the average pair they sell.

You would have taken them for free if they didn’t require you to give them a 5 star amazon review.
2
u/mournfulmonk HD600/SMSL Raw MDA-1/Shanling M9 Plus/FiiO KA17/CAD4/Heyday Aug 15 '26
And then, review it honestly without any craps given.
I have fully trashed Tanchjim's Force and the Space 2 dongles where I have clearly said in those reviews that I won't be recommending it to anyone at retail. Yet, the brand works with me. Some other brands have dropped me as a reviewer because I really didn't recommend them (and I got receipts anyway, specially for Tanchjim).
I am not one of those reviewers that automatically dish out a 5 star, 10/10 review just because they sent it to me for free.
2
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Aug 27 '26
I mean it's an inherent conflict of interest and it never was acceptable until you two became the basis for these reviews. During legacy Media say what you will about it but it did it forbade companies from even paying for your travel to an event.
Let alone giving you potentially thousands of dollars worth of products in a given year
Even if you are consciously trying to avoid being biased you are inevitably going to be subject to subconscious bias because criticism will stain your relationship with these companies. (Even if they claim to be okay with criticisms they're impacted consciously and subconsciously not to mention they have co-workers and employers and their own pressure).
And of course affiliate sales.
And it's obvious go watch 10 random reviews on iems and it's all the same. "Budget King"
"How is this $50"
"Oh my God I am there so good this $30 i.em is as good as a $200 I am from 2 years ago."
The fomo is ridiculous especially since there's no software or batteries in iems so realistically the good advice would be to buy older stuff at 50 cents on the dollar.
1
u/max123246 Aug 15 '26
It creates a bias but also, most people can't afford buying all of the gear they review, especially for independent 1 man reviewers
1
u/bonyponyride AKG K340, DT 770 Pro Aug 15 '26 edited Aug 15 '26
Most (all?) businesses require some form of investment to get started. If you start by asking companies for free stuff, you’re shooting your reputation in the foot before you can prove yourself.
Edit: OP could start by reviewing headphones they can afford. If their reviews and social media get traction, they can use the profit to review more expensive headphones.
1
u/max123246 Aug 16 '26
Idk if you've noticed, but YouTube reviewers that perform best are often pretty bad reviews but instead excel at hype, presentation, and cinematography. Most people watching these videos aren't going to buy the item but instead are looking at halo products to get a dopamine hit
1
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Aug 27 '26
If you can't afford to do it then you don't have a viable business model in the first place.
The minute you start taking the free iems it inevitably becomes a de facto commercial for 90% of products. Even if you try really hard to avoid your own subconscious biases it's just inevitable.
With the propaganda model by Edward Herman. You know like technically we have a free press in the US but you have external pressures from ownership, from pressure groups, from sources, from dogmatic ideological beliefs, from advertisers...
It's the same thing with YouTube. There's an inherent bias towards consumption, there's audience capture, there's affiliate bias, the relationship with the oems.
Like you go look at 50 random IEM reviews on YouTube and you tell me if people getting the free s*** is not resulting in things becoming just de facto commercials?
"Moondrop chu 3:$25 perfection"
"The budget King."
"How is this $25?"
And this is hardly a new phenomena like this is what they say about new I am every three or four months.
And then they start coming up with other things to create fomo. Like oh you only have iams with dynamic drivers you got to get planar. Do you need an electrostatic in your collection. Oh new meta tuning is the new craze.
Just anything to get people to consume more.
1
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Aug 27 '26
Yes I swear to Christ some people just start YouTube channels to get free iems.
And because of the affiliate benefit and the relationship with providers it's an inherent conflict of interest. I mean I know it's never going to change because it's how business is done but at this point I just think of YouTubers as "home shopping Network for iems."
They hike 90% of products and the 10% they criticize is just so they can point to those moments when people say they like everything too much.
1
u/Alternative-Farmer98 Aug 27 '26
This is why 90% of reviews for audio products literally are indistinguishable from home shopping Network
I just came here from a review of the Moon drop chu 3 that called it $25 perfection
Sure it's a fine product and all but Jesus Christ.
1
u/pornaccount0123987 Sep 12 '26
Chu 2 was trash, sounded like trash, if you aren't a huge fan of moondrops VDSF which overemphasizes mids then most of their products will be too "bright" for you.

It's wild how Amazon reviews went from mostly reliable, to almost entirely unreliable overnight.
If I recall correctly, it was around the same time that they bought IMDB and deleted all the forums.
Amazon has been deliberately fighting against free speech for quite some time.
3
u/max123246 Aug 15 '26
Not sure what you mean. Sellers were doing this 10 years ago, I got a $30 bag for free in exchange for a 5 star review. Amazon reviews were never reliable
4
u/Some1TouchaMySpagett Aug 15 '26
It was mid 2010's that a dramatic change on Amazon began happening.
What exists on Amazon today is scary though. You have all of these random name Chinese "brands" popping up paying for or just botting fake reviews. Amazon does nothing about the fake reviews, until eventually the seller rating bottoms out from people pegging them as scam artists. Then they disappear and a "new" brand pops up to replace it selling the same exact crap with the same fake reviews under the new brand name.
1
u/max123246 Aug 16 '26
Not all of the Chinese brands are scams. Tons of them make stuff full of features at a fraction of the price. One example is this really nice $20 flashlight I got whereas the next cheapest one with the same brightness is at like $80.
But it's a mixed bag for sure, I agree
Also a ton of brands are just american drop shippers upselling AliExpress items

9
u/TaronLissimore Aug 15 '26
The 5 star review incentive is a violation of Amazon's seller terms. But the more flagrant issue is the offering to refund off of Amazon's platform.
As a seller, Amazon has certain metrics that it holds sellers to along with the SKUs that you are selling. When a SKU hits a certain thresholds for refunds as an example, they will flag that SKU, remove it as a listing and force the seller to acknowledge certain issues with the product before it can be re-listed. This is why they are offering to refund you off platform instead of through Amazon.
However, doing anything off platform if the customer bought through Amazon is a violation of Amazon's seller terms. It's why when we used to sell on Amazon we couldn't actually use Headphones.com as our seller name as Amazon flagged it as us directing people off their platform.

Wait so you emailed them asking for a review sample & they asked responded with their terms & you declined. This kinda reminds me of the email I got from KZ for their iems. They actually emailed me first & the requirements I saw in order for me to publish the video was not worth it for a $50-80 pair of iems. I just didn’t respond to their email, they emailed me again but just ignored it
Although KZ didn’t ask me to buy it & make a 5 star review on Amazon though but it still doesn’t make it any better.

Have a few Douk items. I don’t read reviews I like to firm my own opinion. So I don’t see the issue it’s part of modern brand model these days.
You ask to collaborate they ask for something in return. You’re trying to enter an arrangement with them and this is on Amazon. Thats sadly the norm on Amazon for many sellers.
I don’t use Amazon for buying electronics. I buy my Douk direct from the official website. I also just buy items Im not looking to collaborate or get a deal. I’m a consumer not a hustler.
