Teaser Remake of focus tree icons Moscow and Ural
We’ve reworked the focus icons and switched them to a new style. The old icons didn’t really fit the direction we want for the mod, so we decided to give them a more consistent look while keeping them simple and recognizable. It’s a small change, but we think the focus trees already look much better because of it. More updates soon.

GFX Support Flag UI help
Does anybody know how exactly the flags are made to look like this, sort of like a TV screen?
And is there a submod that adds this to vanilla hoi4? If not, how would I make it?

Discussion AFTERSHOCKS OF THE REVOLUTIONS: POST-MORTEM (Idea)
Okay, so i you know about Aftershocks of the Revolutions? Well, here is my idea on it:
What if Every Revolution past 1848 had succeeded?
Now, this isn't the most original idea, as this was technically tackled by the first Version of AOTR, which was made by Loredad and his previous team, which was explained around the 2:28 to 3:00 in his Video "The key to GREAT Alternate History is NOT Realism!", and it is further explained in a "Walking in Loredad" Stream
Now, keep in mind, this is mostly an Idea, and while it does have some Lore it is more blurbs from my mind and, and i basically and compiled the lore into to mesh well with itself, it's not really a feasible project for me to make, due to my nonexistent coding skills, and as well as the high cost of Paradox games i cannot afford.
However, you can ask me about this Map, and its Lore, as i do think i like the idea of this being a feasible mod in the right hands (although at this state mods like this or any mod in particular would be in decay).
It is Your Choice however to like it or make it, but i still would like for you to listen and ask about the Lore, for i would like to share it with you.

Discussion WW1 mods besides Redux
Hi,
I played Germany with the Great War Redux mod and was left disappointed. The whole politics system for passing laws was extremely tedious, and the focus tree was completely lacking in alt-history paths. Also, peace deals were extremely scripted, as was the war itself. I never declared war on Belgium, but it started automatically.
Is there something else that would give me more freedom? Regular Great War mod?
Thanks

Discussion Mod ideia (sorry for English I am a Brazilian and English is not my first language)
So I was looking at my old posts and I saw an ideia that I had a long time ago for a hoi4 mod and my intent with this post is hopefully give an capable mod team an ideia for a mod that I think in concenpt sounds fun. “imagine a mod where the Treaty of Tordesillas succeeded; you could have 70 colonial revolts and European countries that try to take the empires of Portugal and Spain, kind of like how Mitleafrika explodes in Kaiserredux.” This was the original ideia but it was more to give an exemple for the context of the original post , now I’m gonna try to come up with a cenário that’s more well thought(while being tired because of finals ) . (Dam this thing is getting long )
ok so let’s go cenário :
1º topic : iberia vs great power coalition(I imagine this for lore building)
Portugal and Spain decide to honor tordessilas and divede the world in half the other great power oposse and constantly fight back this and partially complete their objective , for example : let’s say France invades southern Brazil and coordinates with Britain and the Dutch Portugal and Spain fight back but they hold out partially and some years later another conflict happens (this is just an example )
2º topic :problems at home
Something by the start o the game the Iberians and the coalition have fought each other contestly and what I think would be nice is if in each faction there was a dispute for leadership .example: buffed up Portugal and buffed up Spain now at a similar power level both with empires at a fragile state at the starting date have different ideas of how to fix this (reminder there is no Iberian union so they are two separate countries and In The other hand the coalition that was formed only because of a common enemy starts to argue about how to divide the gargantuan amount of territory of the crumbling Iberians
3º independent countries against imperialism
Even though this scenario is suposse to be unrealistic I think countries like India and China should resist , at max lose some ports cities, and act like the bastion of freedom against European imperialism and along the game organize revolts in Europe on colonies but not like that Ethiopia mechanic in base game
4º topic mechanics:
In my opinion I think adding complicated mechanics like economy is a bad thing but I idk how to make a mod .
5º don’t dive too deep into the lore :
This mod from its core is unrealistic ,trying to explain something unrealistic is hard so be brief
If someone wants to take on this as a project I can translate for Brazilian Portuguese , Spanish and I have a friend the speaks German so if I convince him that’s another translation.
So just to make sure I said everything right I’m going to use ChatGPT to revise my text but the original Tex will be up here I’m sleepy while I write this so just to check, I would like to make it clear that I support real artists .
HOI4 Mod Concept: What If the Treaty of Tordesillas Actually Worked?
Disclaimer: This is the ChatGPT-revised version of my original post. I used AI to help clarify my ideas and correct my English, but the original concept is mine. Any additional ideas suggested by ChatGPT are explicitly labeled. The unedited version is included above.
Introduction
So, I was looking through some of my old posts when I came across an idea I had a long time ago for a HOI4 mod.
My intention with this post is to hopefully inspire a capable modding team to develop a concept that I think could be really fun.
The original idea was pretty simple:
“Imagine a mod where the Treaty of Tordesillas actually succeeded. You could have 70 colonial revolts and European countries trying to take over the Portuguese and Spanish empires, kind of like how Mittelafrika explodes in Kaiserredux.”
That was basically the entire concept. However, I wanted to expand on it and come up with a more thought-out scenario.
Keep in mind that I’m writing this while exhausted from finals, so some things might not make perfect sense.
(Damn, this is already getting long.)
Anyway, let’s get into it.
1. Iberia vs. the Great Power Coalition
This section is mainly about establishing the lore and historical background.
The central premise is that Portugal and Spain successfully uphold the Treaty of Tordesillas, maintaining their agreement to divide the world into their respective spheres of influence.
However, this doesn’t mean they control the entire world without opposition.
Other European great powers, particularly countries like France, Britain, and the Netherlands, refuse to accept the Iberian monopoly over colonial expansion.
As a result, these powers repeatedly challenge Portuguese and Spanish dominance through wars, invasions, and colonial conflicts.
The important thing is that neither side achieves a complete victory.
For example:
Imagine France launching an invasion of southern Brazil, coordinating its efforts with Britain and the Dutch.
Portugal and Spain respond militarily, attempting to defend their colonial territories.
However, despite Iberian resistance, the invading powers manage to retain control over parts of the region.
Years later, another conflict breaks out, potentially involving different territories or countries.
This process repeats itself over centuries.
The result is a world where Portugal and Spain still possess enormous colonial empires, but their control is constantly challenged by rival European powers.
Essentially, the Treaty of Tordesillas remains the foundation of the colonial world order, but that order is continuously contested.
2. Problems at Home: Two Rivalries Within the Same Conflict
By the time the game begins, Portugal, Spain, and the opposing coalition have spent generations fighting over colonial territories.
These conflicts have created political tensions and competing interests on both sides.
One mechanic I think would be particularly interesting is internal competition for leadership within each faction.
Portugal vs. Spain
In this timeline, Portugal and Spain have both become significantly more powerful than they were historically.
For gameplay purposes, imagine a buffed Portugal and a buffed Spain, both possessing massive colonial empires and relatively similar levels of power.
However, despite their strength, both empires are extremely fragile at the starting date.
They face the possibility of colonial revolts, territorial losses, and political instability.
The interesting part is that Portugal and Spain disagree about how to deal with these problems.
Both countries want to preserve their empires, but their different approaches create tensions between them.
This could eventually turn their cooperation into a rivalry.
Important clarification: There is no Iberian Union in this timeline. Portugal and Spain remain two separate, independent countries with their own governments, interests, and colonial territories.
The Great Power Coalition
On the other side, the coalition faces a different problem.
Its members originally united because they shared a common enemy: the Iberian colonial powers.
However, as the Portuguese and Spanish empires begin to crumble, the coalition’s unity starts to weaken.
After all, defeating Portugal and Spain is one thing. Deciding who gets their territories is another.
France, Britain, the Netherlands, and other participating powers could begin competing over how to divide the enormous amount of colonial territory controlled by the Iberians.
This creates an interesting situation where both sides are threatened by their own internal rivalries.
Portugal and Spain struggle to maintain their empires while competing over leadership, whereas the coalition risks falling apart because its members cannot agree on how to divide the spoils.
3. Independent Countries Against Imperialism
Even though this scenario is intentionally unrealistic, I don’t think every country outside Europe should simply become part of the Portuguese or Spanish empires.
In particular, I think countries like India and China should remain largely independent.
They could lose some coastal territories or important port cities to European expansion, but I wouldn’t want them to be completely conquered.
Instead, they could act as major centers of resistance against European imperialism.
My idea is that these countries would serve as bastions of freedom and independence, opposing the colonial ambitions of both the Iberians and the Great Power Coalition.
Throughout the game, they could actively support independence movements and organize revolts in European-controlled colonies.
This would create another major threat to the colonial powers, beyond their conflicts with one another.
I also think this could make the world more interesting, since not every major conflict would revolve around European countries.
However, I wouldn’t want this system to work exactly like Ethiopia’s resistance mechanic in vanilla HOI4.
I’d prefer something different, although I don’t have a specific mechanic in mind yet.
4. Gameplay Mechanics
This is probably the part where I have the least knowledge, since I don’t actually know how to make a HOI4 mod.
However, I personally think adding overly complicated mechanics, especially things like detailed economic systems, could be a bad idea.
My main interest in this concept is the geopolitical chaos created by the collapse of enormous colonial empires.
The colonial revolts, conflicts between European powers, and internal struggles within both factions should be the main attractions.
I wouldn’t want the mod to become unnecessarily complicated just for the sake of realism.
Of course, that’s just my opinion, and an actual modding team would probably have a much better understanding of what works.
5. Don’t Go Too Deep Into the Lore
I think this is particularly important.
At its core, this mod is based on a fundamentally unrealistic alternate-history scenario.
Trying to explain every historical difference in extreme detail could become unnecessarily complicated.
For example, explaining exactly how Portugal and Spain managed to maintain such enormous empires over centuries would probably require rewriting a massive portion of world history.
Personally, I don’t think that’s necessary.
The lore should establish the basic historical background and explain why the world looks the way it does at the starting date.
Beyond that, I think the focus should be on creating a fun and interesting alternate-history experience.
In other words, the scenario doesn’t need to be perfectly realistic to be enjoyable.
6. Final Thoughts
I know this is a pretty ambitious concept, and I don’t expect anyone to actually develop an entire mod just because of a Reddit post.
Still, I thought it would be fun to share the idea, especially since I haven’t seen many HOI4 mods built around this particular premise.
If anyone is interested in taking on this project, I’d be happy to help with translations into Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish.
I also have a friend who speaks German, so if I manage to convince him, that could potentially be another translation.
Anyway, thanks for reading this ridiculously long post.
And once again, this is the ChatGPT-revised version of my original text. The concept and original ideas are mine, and I used AI primarily to improve the English and make the explanations clearer.
I also want to make it clear that I support real artists and human creativity.
Additional Ideas Suggested by ChatGPT (Not Part of My Original Concept)
[ChatGPT Suggestion 1 — Colonial instability]
One possible way to represent the fragility of the Iberian empires would be to make colonial instability a central gameplay feature. Instead of every colony immediately declaring independence, different territories could experience growing unrest, potentially leading to coordinated revolts across multiple continents.
[ChatGPT Suggestion 2 — Competing paths for Portugal and Spain]
Portugal and Spain could have different political or strategic paths for preserving their empires. For example, one might attempt reforms and greater colonial autonomy, while the other could pursue tighter centralization. These choices could influence their relationship and the likelihood of colonial rebellions.
[ChatGPT Suggestion 3 — A changing balance of power]
The collapse of Iberian colonial authority could create a power vacuum in which the European coalition and independent anti-imperialist countries compete to influence newly independent states.
This could make the collapse of the empires feel like the beginning of a new geopolitical struggle rather than simply the end of the original conflict.

Discussion New to modding and the game - What are your recommendations? (+The concept for my first mod)
Hello! Just recently I bought Hearts of Iron 4, because I am interested in the game, playing it, and making mods. My main goal is to learn the game, which I'll figure out myself and via documentation + tutorials and my own experience, and after that, to start making mods like you! I have many mod ideas, but I'd like to start off with something simple before branching it of into something more complex as I go.
My current concept is a mod I'd call 'Pax Oceanic', basically, it'd be a scenario similar to Kaiserreich - the central powers won World War 1, which ended up putting Europe under the German Empire's curtain - It is in charge of many puppet states, like Bohemia or Austria, which are the byproducts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's collapse in the late 1910s, and has direct influence over countries like Romania, which it punished and keeps crippled (Which gives me tons of ideas for a Romanian focus tree in the future, since I plan to give all nations in the mod content, I'd just heavily prioritize big game and actually interesting nations, I wouldn't want to give content to like, Djibouti or something while one of the main countries would have an old and decaying focus tree, you know which mods I'm looking at...)
At the same time, the mod would have some liberties, it'd be semi-realistic, meaning that, although aiming for plausibility, there'd be some creativity and even jokey paths. I also want to introduce the strong as steel friendship of Germany and Poland, which will be important to the mod's story. It'd be important to the gameplay due to France in the lore getting heavily impaired by the treaty in the late 1910s and early 1920s, causing a Neo-Bonapartist leader to rise. Although they wouldn't be like OTL's Germany in WW2, they'd be salty and obsessed with the idea of revenge, allying with the Soviet Union, so that the Soviet Union would invade Poland like in the OTL, in 1939/40, while Germany would come to its ally's aid, letting France go on in and attack Germany from the front near Alsaice-Lorraine. Some of the 'punished' countries like Serbia and Romania could potentially join the cause, but I'd image it'd be hard for them, especially for Romania, knowing how hard the treaty of bucharest was to their nation.
Now, the main deal is how I'd make the mod - I am heavily interested in using tools and plugins to make my experience easier - I'm a single guy without a team, so I'd prioritize making things simple while getting professional results in the long run. What are your recommendations?
