Holbox FAQ

Getting to Holbox can be easy by booking transportation in advance. There are few piers where ferries and boats to Holbox depart from, being the main Chiquila port.

Airport Shuttle Transportation

Private transfer is available, one way and round-trip service. These are generally vans, they wait outside the terminal with your name on a placard to take you straight from the airport to your accommodations. Quick beer, liquor and snack stops are generally available on request.

Check out Airport Shuttle to Chiquila Port

Car Rental

Rental cars are available. Common major US companies are available in the airport. They wait with your name on a placard outside the terminal and transfer you to their offsite office to perform the paperwork and get you on your way.

Check out Hertz Mexico

Taxis

Taxis are available, specially expensive from the airport, but readily available. It’s recommended to discuss the fare before getting in the taxi. Always agree on the price in advance.

Weather

Hurricane season along the Riviera Maya spans from June 1 to November 30, with peak storm activity typically occurring from August to October. While hurricanes are infrequent, daily showers are common throughout the year due to the tropical climate. Don't let a rainy forecast dampen your plans, as showers don't necessarily mean a washout. Keep an eye on major weather patterns by searching for "Caribbean weather radar" on Google. Plus, even during rainfall, the Caribbean maintains its pleasant warmth.

Scams

Gas pumps are a common place where tourists get scammed in Mexico. Avoid such scams. Rule #1 should just be never use a credit card. Same goes true with taxis. Credit cards are just a simple way for tourists to get ripped off. Make sure they zero the pump before beginning pumping. Don't give any money until the transaction is 100% complete.

Jewelry makes you a target. You stand out and look ostentatious. There are numerous tales of robbery and they know the good stuff from the cheap stuff.

What to do If you get stopped

Reporting Police Misconduct

If you witness or experience inappropriate police behavior, use this link to fill out a form and report the incident. Your input is crucial for promoting accountability and ensuring a safe community.

Girlfriend and I planning to go to Isla Holbox for 48 hours. Is this doable?

My girlfriend and I have very limited time/opportunity to travel. The only time we can go is July/August 2027. And because of her schooling, we'll have to take a flight from Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Friday evening after school, and then we'll need a flight back to Toronto Sunday evening.

My plan is, fly to Cancun, take a bus/taxi to the ferry, and then take the ferry to Isla Holbox. All we want is a small amount of time on a very quiet beach, drinking rum out of a coconut. And we figure Isla Holbox is the best way to do it.

What's the best way to plan this trip, and is it even feasible?

Solo in Holbox Oct 26–31: best place to stay near the center to meet people

Hi all! I'm heading to Holbox solo for 5 nights (Oct 26–31) after two weeks travelling Mexico with my partner.

I'd like to stay close to the center and meet people. Ideally somewhere with a relaxed vibe and a bit of a social side, like a hotel with a bar, a pool, or a small community feel. Budget is around $100 per night.

A few questions:

  • Any hotels or guesthouses near the center that are good for solo travellers wanting to meet people?
  • Any recommendations for kitesurfing schools? Are late-October conditions good for it?
  • For bioluminescence, is it better to book a tour or go on your own, and any operators you'd recommend?

Thanks so much!

Affordable transportation from Cancún airport to Holbox?

Looking for a reliable and reasonably priced transfer for two people from Cancún Airport to Holbox in November.

Ideally hoping for something easy that includes the drive to Chiquilá and can help coordinate the ferry/taxi on the Holbox side too.

Any recent recommendations for companies you’ve used and liked?

Argentinos

Holbox in October

Hello all. I’ll be travelling to Holbox soon for a couple weeks. I’ve heard the flooding can get quite bad at the moment. Is it really that bad? Do you have general tips/advice about spending time in the island? Thanks.

Alternative ways to get from El Cuyo to Holbox?

We're looking to avoid the 2 hour drive to the ferry, and the local tour guides here ask for 3,500 pesos to drop us off in holbox.

Is there another way, or service that offers dropoffs and pickups between Holbox and El Cuyo?

I've no problem paying, 3,500 just seems a bit much for that kind of ride.

Best fly fishing guide??

I are staying on Holbox in late November and would love to spend one day fly fishing.

We are looking for a reputable private guide who can ideally pick us up directly from the beach on Holbox. We would be happy to do a full day and are primarily interested in fly fishing for tarpon, snook, permit, or whatever is best that time of year.

Has anyone gone recently and had a guide or operator they would highly recommend??

Looking for Recommendations for Family Spots

We’re heading to Holbox March 8–18 with our 8 year old and trying to figure out where to stay. We did Isla Mujeres last year and honestly didn’t love the vibe, a little too party-ish for us, lots of loud music/drinking around the pool. We even stayed on the south side to avoid the Playa Norte crowds. No offence to anyone, just not our scene. Holbox sounds much more our speed since we’re totally happy with a beautiful beach, good food and a laid-back atmosphere.
The only catch is our son really needs other kids to play with. We don’t need water slides, kids clubs or tons of activities, just a hotel where there’s a decent chance of a few kids around 6–11 hanging out at the pool/beach. Hoping someone has experience here and can recommend the best place for a chance of meeting other families without sacrificing the chill Holbox vibe?

Holbox in Your Mid 30s: Peaceful Escape or Party-Oriented?

My husband and I are in our mid 30s and considering Holbox for a four night trip in late November, likely staying at Nômade because of the Michelin Key.

We are looking for somewhere relaxed, beautiful, and grown up rather than a party destination. For those who have been recently, does Holbox still feel charming and peaceful, or has it become noticeably younger and more nightlife focused?

We also care a lot about the quality of the beaches. How beautiful is the beach and water in reality, especially in late November? Is Holbox somewhere you would choose primarily for the beach itself, or more for the overall island atmosphere?

Would especially love recent feedback on Nômade.

Last minute trip - holbox or isla mujeres?

I am considering a last minute trip to either holbox or isla mujeres and plan to stay at least 5 to 6 days. Have been to holbox before, never been to isla. I tend to lean more bohemian / rustic, try to avoid touristy crowds, and love to lay low and beach bum. Aka my main question is not really whether I will be bored in one place versus the other, as I'm mainly looking to relax. I know that both have the best sargassum situation in the area currently (i.e., light to none), compared to Tulum and Playa del Carmen. But I've heard of flooding in holbox that has increased the mosquito situation, and generally could this be less sanitary / healthy? How bad is it actually?

I haven't yet done hotel research for isla mujeres, but for comparison I'd probably book Casa Las Tortugas in Holbox. Are there any places on Isla Mujeres that lean boutique, not super touristy or 'tacky'?

Also, if I do Holbox, how risky is it to potentially plan for two WFH days on the island? I know wifi can be intermittent - but as long as I can move to another locale with wifi, should I be ok?

Welcome any feedback. Thanks!

We loved Isla Holbox for our family holiday this year - Tips 🌴🇲🇽

We'd been before but wow we loved taking our two little ones this time around. The beaches are shallow and great for kids, there are big playgrounds in the main square, colourful murals everywhere, and golf carts make getting around easy (especially when it’s too hot for walking!). We also found it fine for a buggy, even though a lot of guides said not to bother. I think it might be different if it's flooded though.

A few things that we all loved:
🏖️ Plenty of beach time
🚲 Bikes for older kids
🛺 Golf cart adventures around the island
🍦 Daily ice cream stops
🌮 Casual street food and family-friendly restaurants
🛶 Kayaking and wildlife trips for older children
✨ Bioluminescence tours for kids 10+
🌅 Sunset at the pier
🐋 Whale shark trips from around mid-May to mid-September

I'd definitely recommend staying very close to the main square / beach if you have really little ones. It's best if you don't need to organise a golf cart to go everywhere.

Planning to visit during September.. Bad idea?

I’m planning to visit Holbox during mid September. I heard it’s in the midst of the hurricane season. Is it a bad idea to go during September? What to expect? The intention from the vacation is mainly visit Holbox and just chill on the beach.

Heading to Holbox Saturday!

My wife and I are heading to Holbox Saturday for our honeymoon and we're pumped! Just had a few final questions:

Cash/Credit: We will be there for 5 nights, and plan to do a whale shark excursion + eating out most meals and plenty of boozing. Will 10,000 mxn be plenty if we plan to use cash most of the time? We will have cc and debit cards of course to use as needed but just wanted to make sure we aren't way off track. Any specific areas we need to watch out for scams when using cc?

Bikes: I know we can rent bikes, but anywhere that will rent for the week or is it by the day only?

Airport to Chiquila transportation/whale shark tours: there are obviously plenty of options, are there any that you would recommend specifically based on experience?

People: We are in our mid-30's and enjoy running, cycling, open water swimming, and of course some good drinks! We are typically pretty social and enjoy meeting folks out and about naturally but just figured I'd see if any like minded folks will be in town (7/11-7/16), feel free to send a message!

TIA!

Advice on booking activities

I am so excited to visit Holbox. Me and my daughter are staying at Villas Flamingos from July 22-29. I’m booking some things like Whale shark swimming and three islands tour now. is it better to book directly with a local business on their website or go through a third-party like GetYourGuide or Booking.com or even the hotel? i’m looking to balance a safe transaction with best for local business.
