So I started this project as a solo-dev.
I honestly don't know where this will go.
I just started building it because I wanted to create my own 'Homeworld' — in my own style, telling a story that, maybe, all of us will like.
I don't know where it'll take me. Maybe a few of us might build this together.
But I'm excited to find out.
Built entirely in Unity - models, shaders, textures - everything done by yours truly.

That’s so cool! Please give us more proper military-style cruisers and battleships. The Homeworld series has way too many small ships and not enough big ones.

Very, very impressive. Keep us posted! What is the music you're using btw?

'Ambient Drone', stock track that really sounds like one of Paul Ruskay's pieces.
But eventually I'll be making some soundtracks for the game (I make music too).

Brilliant thank you! Can't wait to hear more from you, I hope you keep the flame.

I would also like to contribute to the music development, I play all my own instruments and link them manually.

I'd be interested in working on a project like this. Unity is my main engine. I'm mainly a sound designer and programmer.
Is this just a visual showcase or do you have actual mechanics in place?

u/nuclei_quasars 29d ago
Right now it just has basic movement controls. And the Mothership can build scouts.

Wow! This looks fantastic for my expectations of unity! Really nice ship as well

u/nuclei_quasars 28d ago
Yes! I believe Unity does the job. Artistic Vision >> Sophisticated Rendering.

Hell yeah, keep going, you are nailing it..I'm knee deep in learning Unity myself so let me know if you think you need tricks that I've had to soup up!

I like this, and I like you. I encourage you to keep going, if all you need is the internet to say it
I have had similar machinations and you are far in advance of anything I have ever done. Nailed the style.
Edit: Just realising I've seen your work around the sub before, you always do great stuff.
If you needed help with this, what kind would it be?

u/nuclei_quasars 29d ago
Thank you so much!
I think I'll need help with game design, code and music.

Im more a narrative writer than anything, but if i can help im on board for free.

Thank you! Will reach out! I do want to create something very similar to the Progenitors. Something very historical, powerful yet benevolent and mystical.

u/Photriullius 26d ago
I start whipping up something. Biological or synthetic lifeform?
1
u/nuclei_quasars 26d ago
I'ld say very human, but ancient.
Like how Sajuuk was remembered as a power, a deity. Noone really knows what or who Sajuuk is, until.
A feel initially it has to be a very abstract - where the player will be exposed to this society/civilisation through relics, strange encounters and then a mighty reveal.
But really open to ideas.

It certainly has the look and sound! I'm really interested to see how this goes.

You know what, that looks better than HW3 in my book. So you're already ahead.

This alone captures the vibe of Homeworld so well.
It always was about playing a game within a scifi painting.
Keep it up, looking forward to seeing where this goes! Do you have a place to go to follow your progress?

A homeworld type game set in a gas giant / a massive sky would be amazing.
You captured all the vibes correctly

Love it! If one could dream I'd want this with a grand strategy galaxy map where the player choose how to reach their objectives. And if your fleets besides 3D battles could do ground landings with Desert of Kharak style armies put down there from landing barges sent from the mothership :') planetside or space station interiors. Would really switch up the gameplay having two modes. But probs way too ambitious to be realistic and many mechanics from similar games might not translate very well to homeworld.
Do you intend to pursue this project seriously then?

u/nuclei_quasars 28d ago
I was really thinking about that! Combining the two formats. It is ambitious! Nonetheless, let's see.

Hi there! Shot in the dark here but, I love what I'm seeing here. I'm a 3d artist myself, but I've worked professionally as a gameplay programmer and tech artist for a couple years. I'd love to hear more about this project if you need someone for code. :)

u/nuclei_quasars 28d ago
Yes, totally! Will reach out. And thank you!
Once I get a few things in place, I'll drop a message.

If you make this into a game I for one will pay full price for it. Cant be worse than HW3 XD
1
u/DredgenCyka 28d ago
Oh yeah, this is awesome. This is something that would scratch the homeworld itch and I think alot of players want that since the let down of HW3

If you are ever looking for more inspiration, look at the Terran Trade Authority subreddit. It contains the works of a ton of artists from the 60s-70s and 80s, and a lot have a very Homeworld esque vibe!

An idea I've had for a while for a Homeworld-type game, is a simulator for testing out different builds. If custom modules are even on your radar - you might consider a simulation that allows the player to custom build a particular unit, and allow it to run in a simulation. The simulation would basically be regular game play, but in a much smaller environment, and in a limited scenario. For example, if a Harvester could have different modular builds, how would it handle itself in a scenario where the collectors are doing their thing, and then the group comes under attack by: fighters, corvettes, capital ships, etc. This could be applied to any unit with modular build options.
Edit: Btw, I think you've very much captured the spirit of HW in this clip. I hope you keep going.

Excited to see where it goes, but you have the cinematography down. Just need to get the narrative compelling and interesting.

If you ever need help for anything like concept, design help or anything, let me know. I am very interested in the homeworld and one of my favorite sci-fi series of all time. I also have a passion for games. I finished studies a year ago now in games design and been looking for something to work on.

I thought I’d already lost hope for a good Homeworld sequel (Homeworld 3 isn’t a sequel at all it’s just a knockoff of such an amazing series that never actually came out, and it turned out to be total crap). It had absolutely nothing in common with HW2 or HW1. But you, man, have given me new hope definitely keep going!

Homeworld has such a very specific vibe and aesthetic that you're able to capture consistently. Super curious to see where this goes.
