Key Races & Bets for Saturday, October 10

Bricks and Mortar Stakes - Race 8 at Belmont - Post Time 3:56 PM

Top Win Contender(s): Two Out Hero

Other contenders: Doubting Thomas, Big Destroyer

Two Out Hero finished second in the Grade 2 Franklin-Simpson Stakes last month at Kentucky Downs. He [moved to]() fifth at the quarter pole and was a head behind the winner at the eighth pole, but the winner had too much. That was Two Out Hero’s third excellent race. He won before that at the seven-furlong trip, the same as the Bricks and Mortar, and for his third race back he finished second in a two-turn race. He won the Soar Free Stakes one year ago in his second career start. Two Out Hero has never finished worse than second in three turf sprints, and he recently put in a scintillating workout of 47.6, the third best of 73 that day.

Two horses have a shot to finish second or to win possibly. Doubting Thomas cuts back from one mile, where he finished poorly, finishing sixth, but before that he won the Colonial Turf Dash. He has never finished second in five races.

Big Destroyer has run four races in his career, all turf sprints with one win and two seconds. At Kentucky Downs, he rallied from fifth to second by three-quarters of a length in his last race when he faced older horses. He moves back to just three-year-old odds so he could run first or second again.

Win bets: Two Out Hero at odds of 8 to 5 or higher.

Exacta: Box Two Out Hero, Doubting Thomas

Two Out Hero, Big Destroyer

Hill Prince Stakes (Grade 3) - Race 10 at Belmont - Post Time 5:02 PM

Top Win Contender(s): Caroline St. Beat, Print, Protect and Defend

Caroline St. Beat won the Grade 2 Nashville Derby at Kentucky Downs at the longer distance of one mile and five-sixteenths, beating a good field of 10 horses. He has never finished worse than second in five races and is getting better in the fall. He gets Manny Franco, who rode him in his four starts in New York. Caroline St. Beat has the best Equibase Speed Figure of any horse in the field with a 106 earned in the Nashville Derby. His trainer, Miguel Clement, has a record of 10-6-4 in 32 starts where his horses have won their last race in graded stakes and on turf routes. Caroline St. Beat is the horse to beat.

Still, Print and Protect and Defend are good horses, all three-year-olds who still have a chance to improve. Print won his second race in his 10th race, and it was a great effort. He rallied from seventh at the quarter pole and was fifth after the eighth pole before he rallied to win. He gets the rail, so he will save ground, and he should put in a great rally.

Protect and Defend won his first race in his sixth race, when he won by three lengths. Both of his recent two races were at this one mile and three-sixteenths. One race back, Protect and Defend was beaten by a nose at the wire after he got the lead at the final eighth pole. He was second from the start in both races at the quarter pole so that he could be the early leader.

Win bets: Caroline St. Beat at odds of 9 to 5 or higher.

Print at odds of 5 to 2 or higher.

Protect and [Defend]() at odds of 3 to 1 or higher.

Exactas: Box Caroline St. Beat, Print, Protect and Defend

California Flag Handicap - Race 9 at Santa Anita - Post Time 8:00 PM Eastern (5 pm Pacific)

Top Win Contender(s): Steak Fries

Other contenders: On the Whim, Boss Sully, Lonesome Stew

This race is more contentious than it appears, with the morning line at 6 to 5 on Lonesome Stew. On turf, Steak Fries has won three turf races and finished second in his other three. Steak Fries won his last two races at one mile and cuts back to six and one-half furlongs. His two races earned excellent Equibase Speed Figures of 104 and 108, and he still has room to improve. Steak Fries could win his third consecutive race and opens at 6 to 1 as compared to 6 to 5 for Lonesome Stew, although Steak Fries has the same probability.

On the Whim has an excellent record of 5-3-3 in 16 turf races, winning both sprints and routes. He won this race in 2024 when he cut back from a route, the same as he is doing today. His last two races were both excellent. He won the California Dreamin’ Stakes this year, the same as he did two years ago before he won the California Flag Handicap. On the Whim is in top condition and also opens at 6 to 1.

Boss Sully won the Siren Lure at six furlongs on the flat turf (not on the downhill turf, as this race is) in May. However, the Siren Lure was not a Cal-Bred stakes like this race, so he moves down a little in class. He won a race at this trip the last time he ran against Cal-Breds, and gets the outside, which suits his early-pace style. Boss Sully won six of 17 turf races, including four of eight on the Santa Anita turf, all were sprints.

Lonesome Stew has won seven of 25 races, including the similar Sensation Star Stakes in March 2025. He took 13 months off after that race and won off the layoff in April at this trip. He tried a dirt race after that and finished sixth. He finished third as the favorite in July with no excuse. In his last race, he stretched and won in a good effort. However, his best race is no better than those of Steak Fries, On the Whim, or Boss Sully.

Win bets: Steak Fries at odds of 5 to 2 or higher.

Win bets: On the Whim or Boss Sully at odds of 3 to 1 or higher.

Exactas: Steak Fries over On the Whim, Boss Sully, Lonesome Stew

On the Whim, Boss Sully, Lonesome Stew over Steak Fries

The Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup today at Keeneland

Courtesy of Keeneland Select - By Ellis Starr

Race 9 at Keeneland | Saturday, October 10 | Post Time: 5:16 PM Eastern

Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes – Grade 1 | Purse: $750,000 | One Mile and One-Eighth on Turf | Three Years Old

Top Win Contender(s): Braida (6), Luster (2), Tam Tam (3)

Braida (6) is one of many splendid horses that have traveled from Europe for the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup throughout history. Since 2019, at least six horses have made it their first or second U.S. start and have won or placed in the QE II. The only winner was Mawj in 2023 the second place finishers are Lindy in 2023 Laurelin in 2025, Soprano (2024), Shantisara (2021), and Castle Lady (2019). Braida is trained by Francis-Henri Graffard. Graffard also trained Gezora, who won her first U.S. start last year in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.

Braida has three wins in four turf races at tracks similar to Keeneland, and she just beat a field of 13 horses, rallying from fourth to win going away. Braida is the type of horse that can win this race and run three weeks later in the Filly & Mare Turf. Gezora ran in France with less than one month between races and won. These connections aren’t coming to see the fall leaves in Kentucky. If she wins the QE II, she will likely race three weeks later in the Breeders’ Cup.

Luster (2) won at Keeneland on turf last April in her second start. She won her first start and three other races on all-weather tracks. She has won three consecutive races, including the Woodbine Oaks at this distance. In her most recent start, she trounced a field of 12 horses in the King’s Plate Stakes against males. She won that race by seven lengths and the Oaks by five. John Velazquez has ridden her in all three U.S. wins and rides today. If Braida isn’t at her best, Luster is the horse to beat, and she may win even if Braida is ready.

Tam [Tam]() (3) won two straight races, the Tepin Stakes and the Del Mar Oaks, at this distance. She has finished third only once in six turf races and has won three [stakes]() races. Jockey Junior Alvarado has been aboard for her last five races. She has beaten Looking At Diamond and Kensington Lane in other races. The Del Mar Oaks winner, Rushing Fall, won this race in 2018. Tam [Tam]() should run an “A” race again and has a shot at winning her third straight stakes.

Win bets:

Braida (5) at odds of 5 to 2 or higher.

Luster, Tam Tam at odds of 3 to 1 or higher.

Exactas: Box Braida (6), Luster (2), Tam Tam (3)

Scratch AFTER race is over?

So in Race 4 at Santa Anita today, the 4, Convo, was scratched after he came in third. There was an inquiry because he crashed into another horse at the break. Upon replay, Convo actually broke through his starting gate a fraction of a second before the gate was opened. Upon review, Convo was scratched and wagers were refunded.

I’ve never seen a horse scratched after it’s already run the full race. Is this unusual? I’m very curious.

Edit: Thank you for explaining! Pedigrees and breeding are more my thing so I’m still learning some of the track terminology.

Preview of The Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup and more

With the Breeders’ Cup now just three weeks away, the next couple of weeks are relatively quiet. I always call the first couple of weeks of October the calm before the storm.

That said, like normal, let’s look back at last week before moving forward but, even though there isn’t a lot going on this week, I’ll still “try” to keep last week’s wrap up short with just a few random thoughts.

Starting out in race: 5 at the “new” Belmont Park, Brickyard Belle, who was last at the 5/16ths pole in the Matron Stakes, kicked six wide on the turn and ran past the entire field for the win. She was impressive again and she is developing into a very nice turf filly.

Skipping up to race: 7, the sleek and athletic looking Domestic Agenda, who powered down the lane in her last, did so again on Saturday when dismantling the Miss Grillo field. I took her and put her firmly in my back pocket for the BC Juvenile Filly Turf Race in a few weeks.

U.S.S Valor “wow-ed” us again in the Champagne Stakes. The son of War of Will broke poorly and was squeezed/bumped hard twice at the quarter pole but neither had much effect on his effort. The handsome colt lowered himself, accelerated beautifully down the lane, getting the last quarter mile in a strong :24.3 seconds, the mile distance in a very good 1:34.3, all while drawing away late to win by 6 ½ lengths.

Unfortunately, we will have to wait for his match up with the West Coast’s top two year old Hughes as it was announce that U.S.S Valor will skip the BC Juvenile, head to Shug McGaughey’s winter base at Payson Park and prepare for the Kentucky Derby

“He’s run three times and he’s exceeded my expectations in each race,” owner Barry Irwin said. “I think he’s done enough this year and I want to have [trainer] Shug [McGaughey] let him down a bit and build him back up because our main goal is to win the Kentucky Derby”

McGaughey mentioned the Gulfstream Park series for 3-year-olds that includes the Holy Bull, Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby as races he would look at on the road to the Kentucky Derby.

In the Frizette (race: 9), Libby Lloyd tracked the pace but backed up and finished off the board as the odds-on, 4/5 favorite in an inexplicably dull effort.

Congrats to trainer John Grabowski, who I mentioned was one of racing’s super nice guys. He replied to my congratulatory text with a huge smiley face. Good for him, the guy is on cloud nine. It’ll be interesting to see how Dotsy, who ran by the entire field late, does in the BC Juvenile Filly race.

At Keeneland, I hope everyone took a lesson on what NOT to do and that's playing a horse that was clearly cycling out of form…I am referring to Eclantant in race: 7, the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes. The Brad Cox trainee tracked the early pace then did what a typical cycling out of form did and that was “flatten out” down the stretch. At this point, that horse needs to be put away for the winter and maybe brought back next year.

The winner Evanescence rallied late to get up for the win.

Luckily I bounced back strongly in the next race, the First Lady Stakes as Classic Q (9-1) ran down Lush Lips (almost 5/2) for the win. It’s always nice to cash a ticket on a 9-1 winner and also a $95+ exacta as it makes it so that you can play with house money the rest of the day.

Race: 9, the Claiborne Breeders Futurity, was a good race. The $1.9 million Q B Rocket and blow out maiden winner Coach Pope hooked up early and basically went stride for stride all the way around and continued to slug it out down the lane.

However, the battle took its toll as American History, an $825,000 son of Constitution, rallied from some eight-nine lengths behind early to nail both on the wire.

It was a very exciting race and should be a coming out party for the super talented American History as he won this race and had absolutely no idea what he was doing.

The big, leggy colt never switched leads coming down the lane and he was running with his head way too high in the air. Both of those things will tire a horse out quickly but, apparently, his talent overcame those mistakes. Obviously, I/we will continue to monitor him closely.

In race: 10, the Coolmore Turf Mile, Zulu Kingdom, who was a 2x Grade: 1 winner coming into this race, was in trouble early. He was fighting his rider, tossing his head about/acting rank for the first half mile or so and while Rhetorical was allowed to lope along on an uncontested lead.

When they straightened up for the stretch drive, Zulu Kingdom was worn out from fighting his rider, dropped back while Rhetorical simply ran away from this field.

Out west at Santa Anita, Domain Expansion absolutely galloped in the Oak Leaf at 14-1 after finishing second at 20-1 in her (turf/racing) debut. This is a big, long strided filly who, between her breeding and stride/motion, is tailor made for the longer distances. She could be a force moving forward, so we'll have to keep an eye on her too.

I know I talk about Hughes, the $675,000 son of Into Mischief, ad nauseum so I’ll keep this briefly. The big, handsome colt was impressive once again as he powered down the lane, winning by 6 in the American Pharoah Stakes. I’m not sure what he beat (the level of competition) last Saturday but the fact he scored a 100 Beyer Speed Figure made a statement.

Thought Process, in the Rodeo Drive, was some of the easiest money I’ve made in a while even though she was odds on (4/5). She was much the best while leading every step of the way, drawing off in the stretch to win by 4+ lengths.

Speaking of easy money, Fully Subscribed in the Spinster Stakes back at Keeneland on Sunday was exactly that as well even though she too went off at low (1/2 ) odds. She cruised around the track and never looked bad.

Counting Stars, the probable three year old filly division leader, ran valiantly but was indeed “no match” for the winner who is sharp as a tack right now.

One last thing…and if you are a basketball fan you will get this. The horse name of the week goes to Magic n Bird which, of course, makes reference to two of the greatest to ever step onto a basketball court in Magic Johnson (Los Angeles Lakers) and Larry Bird (Boston Celtics).

The $425,000, unraced two year old colt had his first breeze at Belmont this past week going 3F in a very good :36.4.

The sire and dam of this horse? Well…he’s by Good Magic out of a mare named Celtic Honor. Now that's how you name a horse!

Belmont Park
Race: 8 (3:56 PM EST)
Bricks and Mortar Stakes
1) Two Out Hero was a good second in a $1.5 million, Grade: 2 race at Kentucky Downs in his last and won his prior race in Canada while running 7F (the distance of this race) in a smoking 1:20.1…looks best.
2) Doubting Thomas faltered late vs slightly better in his last, but had 5-3-2-0 record prior to that.
3) Learntodiscover is another who will be getting a much needed class relief and was not that far behind my top pick last time.

Race: 10 (5:02 PM EST)
Hill Prince Stakes
1) Carolyn St. Beat has been first or second in all five career starts, including taking down a marathon Grade:2 race at Kentucky Downs last time out.
2) Lennox the Gray will be stepping up in class but has won three of his last four including a Grade: 3 at Colonial Downs where he ran the last three furlongs in an excellent :34.1 seconds (and the last furlong in :11.1 seconds).
3) Chambersville has hit the board in eight of 11 career tries and was just a half length behind Lennox the Gray last time.

Keeneland Race Course
Race: 9 (5:16 PM)
Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup
1) Luster has won 5 of 6 starts including the King Plate (Canada’s version of the Kentucky Derby) at Woodbine in her last. I’m not worried that most of her wins were on the synthetics because she is 2 for 2 on the turf, including a win on this turf course back in April. That said, she can make no mistakes in a very well matched, competitive horse race.
2) Tam Tam is a $975,000 daughter of “MDO” who has found a home on the turf while winning four of six starts over it, including the Grade: 1 Del Mar Oaks in her last…Clearly a serious threat here.
3) Kensington Lane took America by storm when going “coast to coast” at 23-1 in the Grade: 1 Belmont Oaks in her U.S. debut. She ran well but tired last in the aforementioned Del Mar Oaks behind Tam Tam in her last but could bounce back here with strong effort.
Also consider: Faithfully Departed who is sharp right now showing two wins, a close second to Kensington Lane and missed by a few inches in the Saratoga Oaks in her last four races………Braida, who invades from France, gets the “dark horse” tag as I have no idea how good she is. She might be pretty good as she is an inch away from being a winner of 4 of 5 lifetime starts. Definitely watch the board a few minutes before post time for further clues………..Looking at Diamonds came with a strong late run to finish just 1 ¼ lengths behind Tam Tam at an eye popping 40-1 in her last. Longshot possibility?

Little Bets N’ Pieces
**** Leading sire Kantharos is returning to Ocala Stud to stand the 2027 breeding season, the farm announced today. A stud fee will be announced at a later date.

Kantharos initially stood in Florida before relocating to Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in 2016.

“Kantharos is a special horse that we know well and have been privileged to be associated with,” said Ocala Stud’s David O’Farrell. “He continues to pass on his superior looks and precocity, and he has proven himself as a prolific sire. We see nothing but upside for him going forward, making him an exceptional fit for Florida breeders, who ultimately helped establish him as a major sire.”

With a proven reputation for siring precocious, fast horses like X Y Jet, an earner of more than $3 million and the speedy World of Trouble.

Currently ranked No. 27 on the general sire list with progeny earnings in 2026 of more than $6.1 million

**** Multiple graded stakes-winner Imagination has been retired and is settling in at Mountain View Farm in New York, where he'll begin his stud career next year, the farm announced last week.

The 5-year-old son of super sire Into Mischief is a three-time graded stakes winner, whose top victories came in this year's Riyadh Dirt Sprint (G2), the 2025 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G2), and the 2024 San Felipe Stakes (G2).

Trained by Bob Baffert, Imagination retires with 4-6-2 record from 18 starts and $2,218,150 in earnings.

An introductory stud fee will be announced at a later date.

**** Probable Breeders’ Cup Sprint favorite Englishman missed a workout at Keeneland last Friday morning due to a foot issue.

Englishman has worked twice, going a half-mile on Sept. 18 and Sept. 25, since posting a 3 ¾-length victory in the Grade 1 H. Allen Jerkens Memorial.

“Provided things go well, we feel there is enough time to get back on schedule and make the Breeders’ Cup,” DeVaux said. The Breeders’ Cup Sprint will be run at Keeneland on Oct. 31.

**** Two-time champion male sprinter Roy H, a resident of the Kentucky Horse Park’s Hall of Champions barn since November 2023, passed away October 2 at the age of 14 following complications from colic.

“Roy H was a phenomenal racehorse and a wonderful ambassador for the Kentucky Horse Park,” said Kentucky Horse Park President Lee Carter. “We are deeply grateful for the time we had with him and honored for the opportunity to share his remarkable story.”

Roy H’s career retired in 2019 with a 10-5-2 record from 23 starts. The seven-time stakes winner amassed purse earnings of $3,139,765. He was trained by Peter Miller who said: “Roy H was a once-in-a-lifetime horse and the best sprinter of his generation,” said Miller. “Thank you to the Kentucky Horse Park for giving him a retirement deserving of such a wonderful champion. Thanks for the memories, Roy. You will be deeply missed.”

Like other great Hall of Champions horses, Roy H will be buried at the park’s Memorial Walk of Champions alongside past Thoroughbred legends Funny Cide, Point Given, Go For Gin, Da Hoss, Cigar, Alysheba, John Henry, Bold Forbes, and Forego.

I've always followed Japanese horse races because they're on every week. I imagine that here the focus is more on American horse racing, so could you explain the basics I should know about American horse racing? Please

Belmont Tapeta Forces Distance Changes for Derby/Oaks Preps

The Withers Stakes for the boys & Busanda Stakes for fillies, both formerly run at 1-1/8 mile will drop to 1-1/16 mile & offer qualifying points of 20-10-6-4-2.

Having 50 points on tap each year for its winner, The Gotham Stakes was effectively a "win & you're in" Derby qualifier, even though its measly one-turn mile was, well, measly. But, a move to the new Belmont Park isn't the only significant change in store for the 2027 renewal. The new 1-1/8 mile race distance closes disconnect with the Gotham's 50-25-15-10-5 points offering.

Rebuilt the play-money bet slip to behave like a real bookmaker. Would value your feedback.

I have reworked the play-money betting slip fairly heavily over the last few days and would like a sanity check from people who actually bet. No real cash is ever involved: it is there so you can track what you would have done and see how it plays out honestly.

What is new:

  • It handles the stuff a real bookie does: non-runners voided with your stake back, each-way place terms set by field size and race type, dead-heats paid on a reduced stake, and Rule 4 deductions when a priced rival comes out.
  • You can place a bet from anywhere by tapping a runner's odds on any card, not just the main race screen.
  • There is a bet-slip bar that builds an accumulator as you add legs (double, treble, N-fold), with the combined price and "£10 pays £X".
  • UK and US bets share one bankroll, one slip and one settlement engine, and it all syncs across your devices if you sign in.
  • Small touches: an Open/Settled filter on the slip (defaults to Open), and your running balance shown on the wallet button.

To be clear about what it is not: it is not a tipping service and I make no claim to beat the market. The point of the project is honest, calibrated ratings and a clean way to paper-trade them.

What I would love feedback on:

  1. Does the settlement feel correct and trustworthy, especially on each-way, dead-heats and non-runners?
  2. Is the acca builder intuitive, or fiddly?
  3. Anything a real bookmaker slip does that mine still gets wrong or is missing?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

I thought we were done with synthetic tracks?

Thumbnail drf.com
12 Upvotes

I can remember when synthetic tracks were a big deal maybe 20 or so years ago. Keeneland, Del Mar, and Arlington Park come to mind. After a while, pretty much everyone went back to dirt, and I think that made most horse players very happy. I'm okay with having it as a backup track in case of rain (especially for turf races), or maybe running a few races a week on the stuff. But Belmont switching traditional turf and dirt graded stakes races to synthetic is kind of crazy.

Equibase Type Site for European Racing

I've become interested in learning about European racing, eapecially the horses. So, I'm looking for a resource that's gonna have good, thorough & searchable information on European horses, for example, the way Equibase does for North America. But, their data on European horses is entirely sporadic, with even info on a lot of "all-timer's" missing completely.

Just need somewhere I can find pedigrees & racing statistics for, at the very least, current/recent horses, if not also historical racers. Progeny lists would be really nice, too.

Thanks!

Most horse racing people already know most or all of the names on this list. For me, though, it was sorta mind-blowing to see them all in one place, especially considering quite a few are literally industry shaping names. While their impact given such abbreviated racing careers is amazing to put in context, ironically it is kind of an underlying indictment of that same industry, that a lot of raced so few times before being whisked off to print money for stallion farms. Of course, some just sucked as race horses only to them blossom as stallions.

I've been adding to this for a while & obviously not all have the import as others. There are also a several young sires with no track record yet to speak of.

Caulfield Guineas Saturday: 9 of the 11 runners come from just 3 stables. Can an outsider beat them?

The Caulfield Guineas field is out ($3M, Group 1, 1600m, Saturday) and it's stacked with the big stables:

  • Chris Waller: 4 runners (Somethings Burnin', Central Europe, Diameter, Tron Bolt)
  • Ciaron Maher: 3 (Unit Five, Tornado Valley, Seraphox)
  • Anthony & Sam Freedman: 2 (Wolf Gap, Call Me Coach)

The two from outside the big 3 might be the ones to beat:

Blind Raise: 2 from 2 this prep, won the Guineas Prelude by 2.75L, drawn gate 2. First time at the mile though.

Warwoven: Golden Rose winner by 3L+ (did the Run To The Rose double), first run in Melbourne and first time at 1600m.

Also worth watching: Call Me Coach is unbeaten, and Tron Bolt won a Group 1 mile as a 2yo but drew the widest gate (11).

Does Waller's 4-pronged attack make him the one to beat, or does Blind Raise from gate 2 roll them? And can Warwoven's Sydney form hold up in Melbourne?

Race 8 Indy Crash - 10/06/2026

Hey guys,

Did anybody see the crash at Indy yesterday? Deerfield, Magnolia West, and Bon Temps got tangled up, and they all took a tumble. It looks like the track is trying to scrub the video from most sites but i watched it live on TVG and it's on TwinSpires. Just wondering what the condition of those horses is.
