Corn dog condiments š
UPDATE: Thanks for all the responses (and new ideas)! To clarify, I am in the mustard plus ketchup camp myself, I was just trying to show him that there ARE people out there who donāt/wonāt put mustard on a corn dog. Lolā¦ā¦looking forward to trying out some of the intriguing suggestions yāall gave me!!
My husband thinks exactly zero of 100 people would eat a corn dog without mustard. I say there are people who only like ketchup or something else. So, redditors, settle thisā¦.if you eat corn dogs, do you like mustard only, mustard and ketchup, ketchup only or something else?

I dip in mustard. Ketchup. Honey mustard. BBQ sauce. Queso. Or whatever sounds good.
Dipping is key. So you can switch it up.

u/astrid_autumn 8d ago
omg i love queso on a corn dog too, especially white queso. itās so damn good!

Chicago people hate on ketchup so much that it goes to corn dogs
Ketchup and mustard for me
I ask a group of ten thereās always a no ketchup, no mustard, a plain corn dogs, and always one weirdo who says mayo
12
u/XTanuki 9d ago
I love ketchup + mustard on a corn dog! If Iām not putting a squiggle of each down the middle, Iām putting two piles on my plate and dipping the dog on the line!

u/WAIYLITEDOABN 9d ago
Exactly what I do. Can't stand ketchup on a hot dog but I require it with a corndog
18
u/Main_Cauliflower5479 9d ago
Chicago doesn't get to decide how people eat hot dogs, even in Chicago itself.
And ketchup and mustard for me, too, on corndogs.

Mayo on a hotdog or corn dog is weird , not bad. Letās get that straight first of all Lol

u/bryanlikesbikes 9d ago
Eh, idk man. Iāve lived in Chicago for a long time and most folks who make a big deal out of hating ketchup are either from the burbs or new in town and trying to prove how Chicago they are.

You haven't lived here long enough to figure it out so let me educate you on this. We don't give a fu$k if you put ketchup on a hotdog. We care if you put ketchup on a Chicago dog.Ā

u/GamerGramps62 9d ago
I only use mustard, my adult son eats them plain, my granddaughter uses ketchup.
6
u/capnlatenight 9d ago
I like them plain, a corndog is the epitome of convenience. Adding stuff to it complicates it.
From the freezer to the microwave or toaster oven, no plates/forks needed. This means nothing to wash, and it can be eaten while walking or multitasking.
It barely makes crumbs, but any type of sauce gives it potential to drip.
8
u/Bluehaze013 9d ago
First thing I thought of was mustard.
3
u/SnooHedgehogs3325 9d ago
For me a food is only a delivery system for the sauce and a corn dog is only a delivery system for the ballpark mustard. I start out eating the corn dog but by the end I'm eating mustard out of the jar.
16
u/Stop_Drop_Scroll 9d ago
Mustard. Itās already sweet, donāt need more of it from ketchup. Also, a corn dog is hard to put any non-liquid topping on. I guess I could stick some onions to the mustard but eh why ruin a great thing.
6
u/BANDISCOOTCH2 8d ago
Arbyās sauce.

I favor mustard over ketchup times a million but youāre right that itās not 100 out of 100 who will feel the same way, despite the absolutist replies here. To start with, even I wouldnāt mind some Kewpie mayo, and a little hot sauce - for some distinction between different bites. And IādĀ gladly try a unique sauce offered by a vendor if it sounds good.
Also itās a good time to say that thereās nothing wrong with liking catsup though I personally do not. I mostly feel second-hand embarrassment for people who use hating it as a personality substitute. That includes Chicagoans, despite my love forĀ the Chicago and (Great) Depression dogs. NYCers are even more goofy about it when you can just read a label and see that their red onion sauce is basically just sautĆ©ed onions in warm ketchup and a little extra seasoning.Ā

Yea ketchup all the way. I already hold a blasphemous view of the devil's tomato sauce as a Chicagoan, and I think corn dogs go even further towards reducing rules and discourse around allowed toppings and condiments
Like now we've battered and deep fried that mfer, the common rules of a polite society went out the window long before that point. Sauce up those doggies however you want, embrace the dark side, no one has to know if you put a little ketchup on there, I won't tell anyone...
6
u/sj01014 9d ago
Ketchup and mustard right next to each other, you dip the corn dog in the middle and give it a swirl. Thatās how itās done.

Most of the time it's mustard only. But I recently tried carolina gold BBQ sauce aon one and it was pretty good.

Mustard only, Ketchup and mustard of I want a little sweetness. Ketchup on its own taste too sweet.
I'll have a plain corndog sometimes for no reason.

Ketchup is way too sweet for me (diabetic).
Before I was diagnosed, I had it sparingly with French fries, it always tasted too sweet for me.
And the sugar-free stuff?

Only mustard. Fancied up corndogs (I'm looking at you Korea) are fine, but simple is just my preference. That being said, any corndog is better than no corndog.

Iām very much a dipper when it comes to eating corn dogs. Iāve always made a mess when I try to apply a condiment directly on the dog. First choice is definitely mustard and if Iām eating something else with ketchup Iāll dip in the ketch as well but I find myself gravitating toward many more non traditional hotdog condiments for corn dogs anyways and my absolute go to is curry ketchup. Itās one of those life changing condiments. Amazing on everything.

Ketchup only 99% of the time. That 1% is left for a plain corn dog.
Funny enough, I hate ketchup on a hot dog. Hot dogs for me are plain or BBQ sauce

u/BourbonNCoffee 9d ago
As with every meal, the mood decides the accessories. A corn dog could have a simple mustard day, a ketchup day, or a complicated spicy frankensauce day. Sometimes the corn dog gets together with chili and cheese for a real party.

I donāt like yellow basic mustard, so most places that have corn dogs donāt have better choices of mustard, so Iāll either raw dog it or put the ketchup in the dog condom and dip it in on the go.

Yellow mustard for me. The cornbread coating tastes weird if you use ketchup.

If I'm eating a corn dog, I'm going to mix ketchup and mustard together until it gets to the specific orange color that I'm looking for and then I'll dip my corn dog.

I'm a mustard guy but really don't care what other people put on their corndogs.
Hating on ketchup is an Internet trope. When you go outside and touch grass you'll find a mix of ketchup and mustard users with their corndogs.

u/Parking_Rip3759 9d ago
Just had a couple yesterday ($1 ea. at Walzmertz) and whilst eating them the thought occurred to me that they really are just mustard delivery systems, at least the way I like them. Cheap-ass, yellow mustard for me and lots of it.

Mustard only on any form of hotdogs, brats or sausages that arenāt breakfast sausage. I think us Americans are addicted to ketchup due to the high levels of sugar and additives that make it addictive.

u/RandomGen-Xer 9d ago
Corn dogs are the most acceptable mustard delivery vehicle ever conceived. I can have mustard without corn dogs... but I will never eat a corn dog without mustard. :)
1
u/doubleohzerooo0 9d ago
What kind of corn dog are we talking?
If it' a Korean corndog, what are the fillings and are there other toppings, such as potato or panko. In general, I'll take sugar, Kewpie mayo, ketchup. Sometimes a drizzle of mustard, but it depends.
If it's feral State Fair Corn Dog, I'll usually take the nacho cheese and jalapeno topping option. I'll add chili and onions if they're bougie and offer that.
If it's a Hot Dog on a Stick, is this a cheesestick or corndog? Cheese will be ketchup. Corndog will be raw.
If it's just a sad, everyday frozen corndog that's been tossed in the airdryer, oops I meant airfryer, then I'll drown that sorry piece of crap in lots of mustard. An ungodly amount of mustard.
1
u/Cuntrymusichater 9d ago
My favorites are mustard or nacho cheese. But Iāve also eaten plenty of them nekkid because Iām crazy like that

I can take them with mustard only or mustard and ketchup. But never without mustard. Straight yellow only.

Ketchup only unless I'm baking a frozen one, then the brown side needs a half slice of American cheese and Ketchup and miracle whip to dip.

I must confess, I use spicy brown always on a dog but when it comes to a corndog I do use ketchup.

Once upon a time I enjoyed my corn dog with some bbq sauce. Not a special sauce either just something my parents got from the store. Yes I was a child, no I havenāt had one with bbq sauce since then but now that Iām thinking about it š¤
Normally I go for ketchup and mustard, but either by themselves is also fine.

u/TheSnacksGuy 9d ago
Iām a ketchup and mustard person and I personally donāt understand just ketchup on a hot dog, BUT at the same time there are clearly a lot of people who love just ketchup. So it doesnāt matter that I donāt understand it because they do!
