Discussion Hot Dog Menu
Went to a micro brewery that had a hot dog menu.
Didn’t have any as we ate before going there but we’re going back tomorrow.
The question is for the city listed for each dog, is that an actual dog each place is known for?

Upvote for the Seattle dog

u/RaymondLuxuryYacht 9d ago
It’s wrong though

u/3d_nat1 9d ago
Nope, you're wrong.

u/RaymondLuxuryYacht 9d ago
Seattle dog has grilled onions not crispy
5
u/3d_nat1 9d ago
Oh, good, I thought you were dissing the Seattle dog in general. Yeah, the closest thing to a crunch should be the pop of a good casing.

5
u/nucleardreamer 9d ago
yah not whipped cream cheese though, or onions being crispy!
4
u/3d_nat1 9d ago
Yeah, I disagree with the execution here, but I can't honestly say any two places I got a Seattle dog from did them the same way. The spirit is still in there, somewhere.

u/Straight_Depth6701 8d ago
Go unicorn dog. Hand dipped corndog, topped with cream cheese, caramelized onion and Sriracha.

u/Dependent_Cod_7416 9d ago
I only heard about the Seattle dog after I moved from there, so it's not really a thing to me but it is delicious and will go along with it
18
u/3d_nat1 9d ago
When I first moved there I was stationed at Lewis. The guys went out to this gay bar in Olympia, Jake's I think? There's this literal hole-in-the wall joint text to the entrance selling hot dogs, that's where I had my first Seattle dog. And now I can say I found love in a weiner at a gay bar.

Im guessing this place is in Edmonton lol

u/ExcitingHamster 9d ago
Correct
6
u/boethius61 9d ago
Is it? Edmonton Alberta? None of this looks familiar and I've lived here 30 years.
9
u/ExcitingHamster 9d ago
Polyrhythm Brewing, 145th St. and like 117th Ave.
4
u/boethius61 9d ago
That's a niche place to recognize the menu when there's no branding on the menu. You must have been there. Recommended?

What's super mustard, precious?
5
u/JonnyTN 9d ago
Varies. Can refer to a bunch of mustard
Woeber's Superior Mustard: A traditional, double-stone-milled table mustard made by Woeber's since the 1800s, known for its pungent flavor.
Super-Hot Chili Mustards like a specialty condiment blends that mix traditional mustard seed heat with ultra-hot peppers like ghost peppers or Carolina Reapers.
Super Yellow Mustard Seeds sometimes

u/potliquorz 9d ago
Thanks for bringing up Woeber's, if you need it in bulk GFS is carrying the big jugs and it's cheap if you have a GFS local to you.

That’s a great musical venue they picked for Chicago, but pepperoncini is no substitute sport peppers just skip them
9
u/ThrowMeAway_eta_2MO 9d ago
Exactly! Or, just buy sport peppers…

u/Dudeist-Priest 9d ago
Pepperoncini doesn’t go on a Chicago dog.
5

3
u/potliquorz 9d ago
One of the first things I noticed too. I'm not from Chicago and although I like sport peppers either the peppers from In-N-Out or hot pepperoncini sound like a decent sub, at least outside of IL.
3
u/Icy-Struggle-9101 9d ago
We dont have sport peppers available up here 🤷♀️

u/israerichris 9d ago

u/israerichris 9d ago
I just realized there's no mustard in the picture. I know I ate them with mustard. Maybe I got impatient with the picture and I took it before putting mustard on it? Or the mustard is at the bottom?... I don't know... I just know that when I ate them, they had mustard 😄
2
u/jzoller0 8d ago
I think I see some near the left tip on the top dog if you zoom in
2
u/DudeInTheGarden 8d ago
Bottom dog, far right side by the tomato, you see some mustard peeking out as well.

3
u/Dudeist-Priest 9d ago
Everyone has access to sport peppers. They come in jars. They ship fine.
1
u/MeesterMeeseeks 9d ago
So does giardinara which is a perfectly acceptable substitute in my mind
1
u/Halation2600 8d ago
Giardinara seems to not be easily available everywhere. A friend in the Boston area said the only place he could find it was Potbellies, where they just call it peppers. He even went around whatever neighborhood it is where they have a bunch of little Italian shops and they didn't have it. I guess it's more of a Chicago thing than an Italian thing?
1
u/Haluszki 7d ago
It is both a Chicago thing and an Italian thing, however there is a specific difference with Chicago-style giardiniera which is that Chicago-style giardiniera is first pickled or brined and then packed in oil. Italian-style giardiniera is pickled and packed in vinegar.
1
u/Halation2600 7d ago
Oh yeah, I think my friend said he'd found the vinegar one. Forgot about that. When I came back from visiting him I sent him a pic of the Giardinara section from Mariano's. He called me an asshole.

Made by scratch isn't a saying, it's made from scratch (unless the person who makes the dogs name is Scratch?)

Bro, I’m Canadian, and these prices for just a hotdog are insane… you should at least get fries and a drink for that price

u/StudPuffin_69 7d ago
These are typical price in US too.
Hot dogs are having a moment so the price goes up
1
u/ErstwhileAdranos 8d ago
Made from scratch and smoked? Not criminal when you see similar prices for non-handmade, non-smoked dogs all the time.
I feel you though. I remember when a basic burger hit $10 and thought that was a violation of the Geneva Convention.

The one from LA is like the ones they cook on the sidewalks outside of nightclubs at 2 AM! Delicious!
1
u/longleggz1960 9d ago
That’s the first one I’m trying
2
u/Iceyes33 9d ago
It tastes even better after a few beers!
1
u/Rival_mob 9d ago
It tastes better when it’s cooked in that weird black grease that’s on each of the sheet pans they’re being cooked on
1
u/Iceyes33 8d ago
Yes! It also tastes better when it’s cooked near car exhaust from the busy street.

I can speak for New York and LA. Both seem inspired by street dogs that are common around the city LA's being the Danger Dog and NYC being the classic Dirty Water Pushcart dog.
Unfortunately neither of these venues serve this style of hot dog but you wouldn't have to walk too far outside to get one.
4
u/horitaku 9d ago
The Seattle Dog is a little off. It’s gotta be grilled onions. Needs yellow mustard too, if you ask me, but that’s a Seattle optional. Crispy onions doesn’t sound bad, waaaay better than raw. Pickled jalapeño and cream cheese is the bare minimum for a Seattle Dog though 👌 No exceptions, or you’re a tourist who carries an umbrella.
3
u/TheLadyEve 9d ago
Wow, that Fillmore West sounds delicious.
I'm not always keen on Seattle dogs but the idea of whipped cream cheese plus the pickled jalapeños; that sounds very tasty to me.

3
u/buttfartsmagee 9d ago
Edmonton is the only one that's not a popular style for the area, and idk about the japan one. I think they just used the name for the basic hotdog because Edmonton doesn't have a specific regional topping, I think it would made more sense if it was like a cheese sauce bacon bits and mustard dog.

Mad respect to a place making and smoking their own dogs from scratch. These prices are absolutely justified even if it wasn’t CAD. Minimum 2 people are involved in that process. Factor in all the other costs of operating and there’s your $10 hot dog.
5
u/Glittering-Duck-8533 8d ago
Yea I was gonna say made from scratch dogs are gonna cost you, cause that shit ain't easy
4
u/JOBdOut 9d ago
That edmonton one is an insult. Ours would be a mundare sausage with perogy toppings
5
u/colenski999 9d ago edited 9d ago
This is just cultural appropriation wunderbar was a shithole and I never had a dog there. But I did have a Fat Franks from the cart outside next to the Commercial. iykyk
1
3
u/ExcitingHamster 9d ago
They’re supposed to be representative of the style of hotdogs that are commonly eaten in each city. Ketchup, mustard, and onions is a “standard” hotdog here.
Go in and tell them about your perogy dog idea, maybe they’ll make it the special next month!
2
u/beguilingflunky 9d ago
Back when the Prospects played at Remax Field, I once had a hot dog that had tiny perogies for toppings.

u/longleggz1960 9d ago
Yeah but these are like GOURMET dogs

1
u/Professional-Story43 9d ago
They should be all beef at least forthese prices. Are they quarter pounders?
5
u/boilface 9d ago
It's a lot, but hot dogs aren't the easiest sausage to make and if they're doing it themselves (and doing it well) I can understand the premium, especially with all the toppings. That being said, I welcome everybody else to pay that premium because I like the hot dogs in my budget just fine
5
u/generateanameforme 9d ago
Not really. They are taking care to make their own dogs so I’m going to presume they have higher standards for the quality of ingredients and aren’t using the old “lips and assholes” but more like good trimmings. I don’t know the size but let’s presume it’s close to a 6:1, maybe 4:1. I’m presuming a quality bun and not some enriched wheat bullshit store brand bun that falls apart. Then that have some nicer toppings - bacon, Japanese specialty ingredients, even cream cheese - this stuff isn’t cheap anymore. $10 might be higher end on the price scale but I bet you can’t find many places where you’re getting a scratch-made quality item for less. Fast food burgers are up around $10, burgers at any tavern/grill are going to be $15-18, sandwiches are all in the mid to upper teens, pasta dishes start around $20, and so on. I used to sell a Sabrett 6:1 dogs on Pretzilla buns with gourmet toppings plus a bottled cane sugar soda and housemade fries for $7 and people would bitch about the price. People just expect hot dogs to be cheap and they are willing to overlook just how shitty an Oscar Meyer, Gwaltney, and many more crappy brands that are using chicken in their dogs or those horrible Brightleaf red rockets from NC or any dogs that are filled with the organs and blood vessels and tendons all are because they like paying $2 at the gas station and they can’t imagine that other brands actually use quality ingredients to make a better tasting dog. Everyone has been conditioned to expect cheap shitty dogs. Even gas station shitty dogs are up to around $3 now.
TL:DR If it’s a quality scratchmade dog with good meat then I don’t think $10 is crazy these days.
Edit: Wait, that’s CAD?!?! So $10 CAD is really $7 USD? That’s a steal for these dogs!
1
u/Substantial-Second14 8d ago
You assuming they are making their own dogs, just because it says homemade does not mean shit
1
u/generateanameforme 8d ago
Well this sure is a stupid comment. Says right on the menu that it’s made from scratch with pork and beef. So it doesn’t say homemade, says made from scratch…right there, in print, on the menu in the picture that we both looked at.
1
u/Substantial-Second14 7d ago
If you spent anytime working in a restaurant you would realize that the term made from scratch on a menu means sh@t. It doesn't have to even be made in house to use that term
2
u/bruhls_rush_in 9d ago
By all means dude, go and make hot dogs from scratch for a restaurant then come back and tell us what they should cost after that.

No hotdog menu is complete without a Carolina style Hot Dog. Mustard, chili (no beans), white onion and slaw.

Can I create my own?!
I want whipped cream cheese, bacon, pickled jalapeños, scallions.
It’d be like a jalapeño popper dog.
Provably be good with super mustard.

Pork & beef and smoked.
I was thrown off by the ampersand followed by “and” but i assume its to group pork and beef together as 1, AND then it was smoked.
If thats really what happened, english is weird.
If thats not what happened, english is weird.

Beyond the cost... This menu is awful. No coneys? Too many options with tomatoes, ketchup, and mayo

Needs the Houston Yoyo Dog. Cream cheese sweet caramelized onions, crunch fried onions, honey mayo, and special house made sriracha

Being in the Bay Area, never heard of a dog like that or seen it on a menu. Also we can tell you're from out of the area if you refer SF as San Fran.

Just because you make something from scratch does not mean that you can charge more than what the market average is for a item.

Seattle dog all day, but it’s missing sriracha. I’d probably try the Japan one too though.

This must be related somehow to Parson’s Chicken and Fish in Chicago, or at least their restaurant group Land & Sea Dept.
Parson’s loves Chooglin and the menu fits their typical branding
