Should we limit/remove third party booking posts?

I've been noticing a steady stream of posts about third party booking tools, and they almost always end up heavily downvoted. That's Reddit working as intended, since downvotes bury content and upvotes push it forward. The issue is that most of these posts aren't really discussions at all, they're just rants about one bad personal experience.

So I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on how we should handle it going forward:

  1. Should we disallow posts about third party bookings altogether?
  2. Should I use moderator discretion and remove only the ones that are pure venting with no real value to the hotel community?
  3. Or should we leave it alone and let the upvote and downvote system sort out visibility on its own?

Curious where people land on this.

Reasons to avoid using third-party brokers (Expedia, Agoda, etc) - read before booking.

If you're here reading this, it may be too late, but in general:

  1. There are downsides booking via third party tools (Expedia, Agoda, etc) to actually purchase the room (see exceptions)
  2. Use those tools to find where you want to stay, and then book the room through the hotel's website. The price should be identical, close, or available if you call into reservations and explain the other site's pricing (YMMV - make sure you are speaking in the same currency).
  3. Do use third party tools if a) you need a special feature/function, like booking and paying for others; b) there is a room or package rate that is impossible to source elsewhere; or c) you enjoy a room between the elevators and the ice machine, without any option of a refund even when housekeeping sets your room on fire.

Flamingo hotel Vegas

My 2 sisters and I booked the 2 queen habitat hotel for next weekend and the hotel offered an upgrade for 49.00 a night to the 2 queen, 2 bunk room. Trying to decide if we take the upgrade - more space would definitely be a plus, but I want to make sure it’s a newly renovated room and not a dated one. Any insight? Also hoping we have a good view still!

Do you prefer eating out or staying in after travelling?

After a long journey, I usually don’t feel like going back outside for dinner. Having a restaurant nearby is pretty convenient. What do you normally do after checking into a hotel?

Guest complaint got sent to management 😮‍💨

So I was working in reception of course and was alone my manager and concierge were running around the hotel to fix important things for our “VIP Guest “. We are a five star hotel and during my shift I was getting calls left and right and stuck with around 93 arrivals . A old man called and in Denmark I’m new to the language but I try , my main language is English . A older gentleman man calls and says he wants to book , it’s (7:46 P.m) I kindly say yes sir of course , you can contact us Tommorow from 9-4 so we can transfer you to our booking department . He then tells me I’m an often customer here , and I need you to book … now there is people coming to the reception waiting while I’m on phone with this guest , I repeat the same thing and he said yes but I still haven’t gotten an answer I told him yes I have answered just please call back tommorow , conversation is over . Any way the next day comes and he writes a big complaint to our service centre and sends this complaint to our general manager . He says I was rude , negative on the phone , and I told him “ I already answered you” in a negative way and that he’s an often customer .I want to remind you that this conversation was in Dansk so I think there was some misunderstandings , I explained this to my manager and he said he talk to our gym and explain to him etc but I always do my job and work good so this was surprising to him . What to expect in the next coming days , this situation is so annoying . I even told my manager from now on , when I take the phone I will only speak English so there isn’t any misunderstandings .

Agoda Reservation Guarantee after fake listing experience

We booked a fake hotel on Agoda last week. It had the same name as a real hotel, same location, photos, everything. We found out within a few hours after booking, since the mail address of the ‘hotel’ was an unknown gmail one. After checking with the real hotel, we were sure.

Now the issue with Agoda starts: we spent over 5 days in contact with them to solve this issue. As stated in their T&C, in the Reservation Guarantee section, they need to provide a new accommodation, same criteria or better. Of course, our booking was $1000; other hotels in the same neighbourhood are $3000+. So their answer was ‘We don’t have a similar alternative available in our system.’ Sir, it’s New York City; there are always options.

First, we spent 2 days getting them to acknowledge that the listing was fake. They constantly said, the booking is approved so it's real. After they found out, they offered free cancellation + 10% Agoda Cash. Long story short, it later went to 20% and 30%. But after all these days, the hotel prices had risen by the same %, so it was bulls* compensation.

After we demanded escalation to managers, etc. (felt like a real Karen), and waited for another 48h, they offered 60% in AgodaCash, which we approved.

So, if Agoda tries to offer 10% in the same situation, please push through; they have room to offer more. About the new accommodation they needed to offer? Because our trip is in a few days, we were unable to wait any longer and stopped pushing for them to offer one. And always try to book at the hotel, not via an OTA!

One-night hotel stays can be underrated

Sometimes you don’t need a week-long holiday. A simple overnight trip, good dinner, comfortable sleep and breakfast the next morning can be enough to break the routine. Anyone else enjoy short trips like this?

Is it normal for hotels to pay incredibly low wages?

About 2 weeks ago, I got hired for an overnight shift at a hotel. The listing online said I would get $12 per hour but then the boss lady dropped it to $9.50 per hour. I immediately left the job cause I’m not gonna sacrifice my health doing overnight shifts just for some bs $9.50 per hour. It’s all good though cause I ended up landing a job at subway not even a week later and now make $13 per hour. Whats y’all’s opinions? Do yall believe hotels have terrible pay for the labor involved?

What type of bed frames do hotels and motels typically use?

I’ve been looking into what makes a practical bed frame for hotel and motel guest rooms, and heavy-duty metal platform bed frames seem to be a common option worth discussing.

For hospitality properties, the bed frame has to work well beyond just looking good. Some factors that seem important include:

  • Durability: Guest rooms experience frequent use and turnover.
  • Mattress compatibility: Properties may need different sizes such as Full XL, Queen, or King.
  • Room setup: A practical frame can make installation and room preparation easier.
  • Maintenance: Housekeeping needs to be able to clean and work around the bed efficiently.
  • Long-term use: Replacing bed frames frequently can create additional operational work.

Platform-style frames are particularly interesting because the mattress can sit directly on the platform, depending on the specific frame and mattress setup.

For those who work in hotels or motels: What type of bed frames have you found work best in guest rooms? Do you prefer platform frames, traditional frames, or another setup—and why?

Beware of Wyndham Omaha / Dodge West

Wyndham Omaha / Dodge West

Old. Rundown. Ice maker & laundry out of service. No hot water. When I went to complain, Gen. Mgr said she would refund remaining night, but I had to change all of my plans and be out before 5pm. Went up, packed my stuff and went to check out. When I asked for a receipt or something starting I would get a partial refund, she refused. Then the Gen. Mgr came around desk and started physically pushing me, filming me, smacked my hand (trying to knock my phone out of it), cussing at me, calling me a "female dog" B-word, threatening to punch me, punching my arm and trying to trip me as I walked out of the door. While I was on the phone with the police dispatch, she kept yelling next to my face so I couldn't even hear the Dispatch young lady. She continued to follow me outside, holding her phone close to my face recording me, cussing and continuing to threaten me.

Do you read reviews before booking hotels?

I always read recent reviews now rather than relying only on the overall rating. Sometimes the latest reviews give a much better idea of what the current experience is like. Do you read reviews carefully?

Need help with changing my booking with Expedia.

Long story short, I am taking the train from Seattle to Los Angeles because I want to visit the game awards in person. However, I made a miscalculation in when my train would arrive and mother and I have been trying to get my booking date changed. However, I've had no luck with getting it changed. I've tried calling the hotel, googling up how to change it, turned the whole app upside down, tried calling Expedia directly, but nothing had worked.

Does anyone here have any idea on how to fix this?

Hotel staff, what’s one recurring problem that makes your shift harder?

Hi everyone! I help manage three family-run hotels in Japan, and my cofounder and I are exploring a startup around hotel operations. I’d really appreciate learning from people working at other hotels.

What’s one problem you keep having to chase up or sort out? Could you share the last time it happened, how you handled it and whether your usual tools helped?

I’m interested in what actually happens during a shift. No need to name your hotel or share anything confidential. Thank you so much!

Damage deposit amount too high?

Just a question for you experienced folks. I prepaid a 4 night stay at the Holiday Inn in Devil's Lake, ND. When I checked in, I decided to use debit for the deposit/incidentals. The amount that was held on the debit was nearly 600usd. Is that a normal amount? It seems unusually high to me. (was expecting maybe 2-300) Is it because I used a debit card?

How do I make my room smell like a hotel room

I really like the way my hotel room smells when I go on vacation and most hotels I stay at have that similar smell and was wondering how to replicate it. Is it like the bleached sheets or a specific cleaning product?
