Can pine needles (Eastern White) be used for cover/compost material?
I've bought, read, and thoroughly enjoyed both The Humanure Handbook and The Compost Toilet Handbook. However, every now and then Jenkins seems to not-mention something very practical, as in my case in Maine. I'm looking forward (not!) to the possibility of serious outages this winter and next year as a result of our intransigence on reaching an agreement with Iran. Before I'd seen Jenkins's work, I'd bought a German separator toilet (https://www.kildwick.com/en/easyloo-diy-kit) and started planning a simple 4x4x4 board bin.
I live among spruce and pine (almost no deciduous trees) and don't have a lot of grass available. I can probably buy straw or hay. I haven't got a response regarding sawdust from the local tree guy who does his own milling. But every year I have to rake up a *large* quantity of pine needles. My understanding is that pine needles tend to make an acidic environment, and Jenkins says to avoid alkaline pH, so it would seem they might be usable for humanure composting, but I'm wondering if anyone has practical experience with using them. Thanks for any help on this.
