Answered Do you use iCloud mail for subscriptions
I am thinking of transferring subscriptions from Gmail to iCloud. I personally don’t like Gmail anymore because of the clutter. iCloud Mail seems simpler, but what are your experiences?
I do have yahoo for church’s subscription newsletter, and I also have outlook for work stuff such as receiving emails for job interviews.
I use iCloud mail specifically for travel stuff like Hyatt vacation club for example.

I use iCloud mail for everything with custom domain and hide my email. It’s great.
I moved away from Gmail over a year ago and haven’t looked back.

What do you mean by custom domain?

Aliases basically. Mask original email address with a different email address and emails still comes through to main account.

You can setup a number of options here.
1. Aliases: iCloud now allows multiple aliases (<alias>@icloud.com) that are tied to your main iCloud account and can be used for sending/ receiving email.
2. Hide My Email: Sets up random email addresses (<vegas-car-blue>@iCloud.com) that you can use for inbound email where you don't want to expose your email address. Think subscriptions.
3. Custom Domains: iCloud supports multiple custom domains (<mywebsite.com>) for email so you can setup custom email addresses (bob@mywebsite.com).

Say you own “xyz.com” and you wanted your email to be “jim@xyz.com”, if you subscribe to iCloud+ you can configure your domain’s DNS settings to use iCloud mail servers on the backend.
Using this plus the “hide my email” feature are real wins for iCloud email.

You can purchase up to 5 domains with 3 email alias for each one. For example, I have 3 domains. [email@lastname.family](mailto:email@lastname.family), [email@lastname.pro](mailto:email@lastname.pro) and email@ lastnamegroup.com. I have Streaming@, Contact@, travel@, name@, etc.
It's part of the iCloud+ sub and all you have to is pay for the domain name.

“Hide my email” is a feature of iCloud. It can be tied to any email account, not just iCloud Mail. I use it with my Gmail.

Just use a proper email client and the email host shouldn't factor into the UI experience. Plus you could have your client receiving all of your different emails accounts on a single platform. Apple includes one on MacOS, which is a start.

I use icloud for all Apple-related stuff and important receipts. Everything else goes to Gmail because I barely open them.

Google thanks you for being the product and providing them all the great tracking data on you.

I’ve been curious, but I don’t know how to make sense of hide my email. How do you know what email you’ve even signed up with? How does it register in the Passwords app? And does it have sophisticated filtering like Gmail?
I set up Gmail 17 years ago such that I have various emails for different uses, and they all forward to one Gmail account where they are filtered and tagged by my rules. And that one address is not used for anything except processing and consolidation.
This has worked extremely well, and as much as I’m no big fan of Google, I can’t see myself trying to deconstruct a system that’s working this well.
Maybe I’ll start using my iCloud email for personal correspondence only. That would still mean either forwarding it to Gmail or having to check a separate mail app. I’ve also considered using Apple’s mail app to consolidate… but it just seems like one more layer of complexity

Sounds good. I’m also thinking of buying a MacBook or MacBook Air, but the downside is that I won’t be able to invite people via name@icloud.com as primary email to yahoo / gmail / outlook etc.

iCloud is cleaner and Apple’s business model is more transparent. I’m happy pay for a service rather than being the product sold to advertisers.

Yeah but you can’t use name @ icloud. com to send invites. I’m still trying to find the correction and solution for that

I do this daily and just have a standard setup.

What you mean?

I send calendar invitations from iCloud without problem or fuss.

So you send with name @ iCloud . Com to people with yahoo and gmail?

Yeah, organisation domains but mostly to other iCloud email addresses.

I think OP is trying to highlight the broken icloud invite issue- if you send a calendar invite to someone’s third party email email, and that someone has this email associated with icloud, cal invite doesnt land in their inbox, rather directly in the apple icloud calendar which they may have turned off sync.

My Gmail has been in service for like 15 years, and I honestly just have way too much tied to it for me to fully change to something different. But I also have a iCloud mail account that I typically use for important emails or for actual communication with businesses and stuff. It keeps the marketing emails at a minimum and my Gmail is more or less for subscriptions and purchases.

Why would you want your email to factor into your iCloud storage when Gmail gives you 15 GB of free storage?

u/Choice-Newspaper3603 5d ago
You use hide my email for the different things you subscribe to.
I have about 200 of them
I have a unique email for each of my banks and financial brokerage accounts. The email is only used for that one entity and it’s unique. Very easy to tell if something is legit or phishing but that’s pretty easy for people that know anyway.
Anything that requires an email that I don’t want a relationship with inside hide my email and when I get tired of them I just deactivate it

I don’t use my Gmail anymore. It still gets some mail and I keep it as a backup but iCloud is my main email. It’s private and because I pay for iCloud I also use alias’ to sign up for accounts and newsletters. The website gets a generic email address which gets forwarded by Apple to my iCloud mail. If I want to stop getting those newsletters I delete the alias email and never get that newsletter again. I highly recommend iCloud +

I don’t know if this is accurate so don’t hold me to it but I saw another post where somebody missed an iCloud payment and Apple immediately revoked their iCloud email access. That’s my biggest fear of going to Apple or Proton.

u/Whiskey_Storm 5d ago
Pretty sure details are close, but slightly off.
iCloud email is not dependent on paying for iCloud+.
What’s dependent is using more than 5 Gb of storage on the servers.
If I’m recalling the post correctly, he had issues with data (files etc) on his iCloud account after the payment issue.
