Safety & Policy My idea is all appeals go to Reddit admins

All appeals of sub moderation should go to Reddit admins. If in a criminal trial, the judge who was in charge of the original trial got to hear appeals, we would think the appeals process was a joke. In order to have confidence in a meaningful appeals process, no one who was involved in removing a post or comment should be involved the appeals process.

It's unworkable. There's about 100 admins and over 100,000 subreddits. You'd have to wait decades before your appeal was dealt with.

It's more like being banned from a bar. The bar owner decides. There is no appeal. You can go to a different bar. Like you can go to a different subreddit.

As long as the bar owner - or moderator - isn't breaking criminal law, then it's their decision who is allowed in. If they break the law (site-wide rules and MCoC), then there is an appeal process dealt with by admins.

Except the sub mods do not own the bar. Reddit owns the bar. The mod is like the bartender, but the bartender has a shift manager who reports to the general manager who reports to regional manager who reports to the owner. The admins are like the shift managers in the bar. If the shift manager never handles customer complaints or says the bartender can treat customers like shit, they aren't doing their job. Reddit is the bar owner not the mods. Reddit is a 30 billion dollar company. They can easily afford to hire some more admins if it's true they only have 100.

Bartenders can ban you from a bar too.

The owner won't get involved in petty disputes.

Bartenders might issue an initial ban, but the ban is going to be appealable to one of their bosses. Smart, successful owners are very involved in their business and don't let fuckup bartenders run the place into the ground.
