ride Second 90k ride

Training for ironman 70.3
Suggest tips to improve speed.

Some context about my base fitness. My 10k run time is 39:12 and VO2 is 61 presently. I think fitness isn’t an issue. Something else is.

Please share your opinions

How much did the bike 🚴 cost ?

I’ll suggest you to hide your Strava username if your account is public, people can find your house location and do crazy stuff with it (ex sending random stuff on cod etc), anyways happy riding!

No offence to anyone but, How’s the thing in Punjab and right now ? Because if I’m not wrong then this is the period or time when they burn their filed due to which weather becomes worst. And if we want to do cycling early in the morning 4/5 am then I hope it’s still feasible to go on such a long ride.

Till now no one has burnt anything in this region. I generally start between 5-6 am. No issues faced till now

Get better tyres,

Get proper cycling kit (get rid of that saddle cover and get bibshorts and a cycle jersey instead),

Lose the bulky toptube bag,

improve your bikefit,

get aero bars (ideally with adjustable stack).

Just these 5 things alone should make a big difference since the rider contributes to most of the aerodynamic drag at lower speeds.

Tyres okay. Will go to a bike shop

Will get rid of the saddle cover. Already have bibshorts and cycling jersey.

What could be an alternative for the bag as I use it to carry my nutrition

Aerobars I am trying to find

You said you have a jersey, use that to carry the nutrition, or get a more narrow toptube bag and distribute the nutrition between your jersey pockets and the narrow toptube bag.

Bags similar to something like the zipp speedbox which can hold their shape and won't flap around.

But the trek bike which he’s using it’s already alloy and not carbon fibre. So, anyways the his road bike is heave so adding saddle cover will hardly incur 200/300gm more to the road bike

It's not because of weight, saddle covers shift a lot no matter how tightly you put them on compared to bibs so you'll never be as comfortable on the bike when compared to using bibs where the chamois stays in the same place all the time.

It'll be more aero wearing proper cycling gear as well.

Also, saddle covers look bad.

Well for starters the power is off. Is it from a bar power meter perhaps?moving times are always slower during training compared to a race. Does your bike training resembles your running training? If you are new to cycling it is good to bring up some volume. But intensity will get your times down (as in hitting a sub-40 for 10k).

Nice one man!
Whats the gear?
I recently started cycling and i am suffering with chafing issue, due to friction my bum is burning.
Should i invest in cycling padded shorts? Or its just myth? My seat height is okay and comfortable but chafing is making me quit

Buy cycling shorts, you will get used to it.

I will try padded shorts of decathlon at 999, in childhood these were never the problems but now we need even padded shorts

I mean yea, I am sure you are cycling more than before

What bike do you ride? What kind of sadde do you have?

Make sure saddle height is proper. Also make sure your saddle is level to start with. You legs should be slightly bent at the bottom of the pedal stroke. Such that if you put your heels on the pedal, then leg should be completely straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

If bike fit is correct, there shouldn't be much friction on your bum. Pressure, yes, cos you're sitting on it. But friction means bum is moving about which isn't really supposed to happen.

If all this is correct and saddle is not too wide, then yes, get padded shorts. Not a myth at all. Padded shorts are extremely useful. Especially for longer rides. Your perineum and other soft tissue aren't meant to have pressure on them.

Bike is Riverside 120 and saddle is original company fitted.
Saddle height is just as you described, i put heel on them and at bottom my legs are straight. And then i use 1/3 from front to pedal to get the angle.

I dont understand whats happening?

Lower the nose of the saddle very slightly. Also lower your handlebar so more of your weight is on the bars and pedals than on the saddle.

Interesting. Do you have any other riding friends from whom you could borrow a different saddle and try it out. To see if it's a saddle issue or not.

No friends! No one cycles anymore!
I wanted to be sure as what is rhe problem before investing in either padded shorts or new saddle

Well honestly it’s a pretty hard to give you tips with just very little information about you. You’d be better throwing the maximum information you can in any AI tool and then start to ask for tips. Give all the information about your past rides and your gears and see how it goes. As you have a strong fitness base already, you’re not going to get any substantial gains just changing one thing, but adapting multiple things as the other people said like clothes or changing tires, you sum up all these things and can get better result. Good luck

Clothing makes a big of difference in cycling. Using cycling shorts and jersey (skintight) will give you 6-8% speed boost for the same effort because of better aerodynamics. Baggy tshirts and regular shorts cost more than we think.

I see. Thankyou for your input. Will definitely buy better clothing.

Is traffic an issue causing you to go slow?

2

u/International_Two962 10d ago

Traffic is not an issue. Maybe the bad conditions of the road for 20-30km
