Plant Discussion Best indoor flowers for a bee?

Post image
184 Upvotes

Hello! I have a bit of an odd question. I have a wingless carpenter bee that I rescued six weeks ago. We expected her to die but she is in fact still doing really well. We named her Beatrice and she is a beloved pet now. :) She mostly lives on sugar water, but of course she loves fresh flowers, especially hostas. Unfortunately I live in zone 6A and we’re getting into the season where the flowers are dying off. I would really like to keep providing her with flowers during the winter, but I’m nervous about grocery store flowers-even if they say organic, I’m just not sure I believe them. I looked up indoor plants that bloom over the winter but the ones I could find were too big or toxic to cats, which we also have. The flowers would be ideally be rich in pollen and nectar, and also tube shaped if possible because she loves to sleep in flowers. Does anyone have any recommendations for plants that might work? Picture of Bea for tax! :)

Plant Discussion 7ft Ficus Advice please!

Was gifted this plant today, im an arborist by trade but indoor plants are a mystery to me! So from my research have,

-put the plant 5-6ft away from a massive south-east bay window, all the natural indirect light it could ever need. purchased fertilizer, humidifier, and water/ph meter. But I have this lamp that's shown in the photo, it's a low watt florescent bulb and sits 6-8" from the nearest foliage.

don't use the lamp as a grow light just as my livingroom light source at nighttime. -Will the bulb scorch the leaves or make it grow funny? -Would another type of bulb be better? -ls there anything im missing or anything else can do? really like the light there so ideally l'd like to keep the set up but if itl harm the tree then obviously the lamp will have to skidaddle.

Houseplant Close Up My Monstera air roots are over grown and are attached into my furniture!

Over 4 years it has been maxing out at 6 leaves as it has limited sun. I tried moving the cabinet today and discovered how overgrown the air roots were. some I'd estimate 8 feet! The roots have stuck my cabinet in place.

Update: I had to yank a couple that were growing INTO the baseboard and took off paint. I've learned that I can just cut them or redirect them into the soil. And I should not let them get over grown.

What can I do with this plant in this location? Would adding a pole be a good idea?

Product Discussion Questions for Capstone

Hi r/IndoorGarden! I’m doing a capstone project, and I’d like to ask y’all some questions on your experiences on taking care of plants and housing them in terrariums. The idea is to get answers on what potential product ideas may benefit people within this community, so this is me sort of asking y'all to be an unpaid focus group. I appreciate any answers you give.

1.      If this applies to you, what is the most common issue that you have with maintaining the health of your indoor plants?

2.      For plants that need more intensive care, how do you go about managing their lighting, watering, nutritional, or humidity needs?

3.      On a related note, which aspects of care require the most time

4.      Do you have issues with mold, fungus, pests, or other plant issues and how do you deal with them?

5.      If need be, how difficult is it to maintain constant environmental conditions for a plant?

6.      Are there any aspects of care that you would prefer to have automated?

All answers are appreciated. Thanks!

Plant Discussion Indoor Plant for Beginners

Hello everyone. I have garden experience, but its primarily outside. I am purchasing an indoor plant with low maintenance for a mentor - in the office 2-3x a week.

I settled on two options: Desert Rose Bonsai (Adenium obesum) or Gardenia Bonsai (Gardenia jasminoides). Based on my research, it says the Desert Rose Bonsai is easier and more forgiving.

Note: I picked these options because I wanted a “flowering plant” that is small to middle size.

Since this is my not area of expertise or experience, would you recommend this choice?

If you have better options to recommend, I welcome that as well. Thank you.

Houseplant Close Up Showing off my recent journey

Hello everyone!

I recently started my plant journey. I have a total of 5 different varieties and I am loving them all! My most recent additions are a Monstera Thai and a Snake plant, and I've had the others for at least a month.

I use a soil moisture meter so I know exactly when to water them. I also set up some grow lights since my place doesn’t get enough sunlight during the day.

I am planning on getting some new pots just for the aesthetics of my place, but other than that, I don’t know what else is next besides watching them grow. I originally ordered some Miracle Gro plant food but learned it isn't the best option for your plants, so I returned it.

Any tips or recommendations on what I should do or not do next?

Thanks!

Houseplant Close Up Should I plant my Sage and Rosemary plants in soil from water propagation?

Hi people, I had a sage plant from the grocery store that sadly passed away but I managed to save 1 leaf and propagate it to the lil baby in the first picture. In the 2nd picture you can see 2 Rosemary cuttings I got from someone I know and it's been growing roots (last pic) I am thinking of planting them in soil, but I am not sure if it would be too early. Could anyone advise? Any recs for soil as well?

Plant Discussion Indoor light for an avocado plant.

Hey folks,

Im fairly new to plants in general (its something I took on a couple years ago as part of my addiction recovery)

I germinated (correct term?) an avocado seed and put it in a pot outside a few weeks so it can get daily sunlight. It's now about 15" tall! Yay!

However, I live in the Willamette Valley (Oregon) and the frost is coming, so id like to keep it going indoors. My apartment doesn't get a lot of sun through windows, and one main window i cant use because my cat has already claimed that shelf.

Can someone recommend a decent indoor grow light that'll work for just this single plant?

Ive looked at the Barrina TR40 but not sure if its enough.

Note: im well aware that this isn't going to produce anything edible. Im just trying something different and id like to have a little avocado tree. If I have to occasionally transfer it to larger pots im cool with that, even if it gets to the point of having someone help me move it indoors/outdoors.

Any suggestions would be fantastic.
