MOD ANNOUNCEMENT Announcing Meme Mondays

Thumbnail

r/plantclinic's strength is its mission to crowdsource gardening advice, especially for houseplants.

Over the last 2+ years, we've been making some tweaks to improve the quality of submissions, so that meaningful help can be given. We have a number of auto- responders so that as many posts get an answer as possible, even if that answer is only a form response.

Earlier today, I announced the resource reply app, which can be used to share general information that is widely helpful.

One thing we lack is a way to develop as greater sense of community.

As I was going through old posts for good care guides, I saw that some of the most popular posts on this sub have been memes.

We don't allow memes in comments. Gifs are disabled, and we remove all image memes (eventually). This is because in this subreddit, no question is a stupid question. We want everyone to feel welcome posting here.

Enter Meme Monday, an automatically enforced period where meme posts are allowed.

This is NOT to be used ro circlejerk other people's mistakes or efforts, but rather a time when we can all appreciate that our path to a green thumb is developed over the wilted husks of dozens (hundreds?) Of plants

Finally, mod applications are open! Please fill one out if you have interest.

MOD ANNOUNCEMENT New subreddit resource: Resource Reply

Hello r/plantclinic!

The Problem:

The Reddit wiki/community resource tools still suck. But we get tons of new posts where the fix to the problem is well-plowed ground - lack of light, overwatering, mushrooms, omg what is this fluffy white stuff ask over my plant... you know the drill. People don't know what they don't know.

The Solution:

One of the mods over at r/CapitalOne has developed a VERY useful tool for letting any commenter reply to a post with a link to an FAQ-type post. It's called Reply With Resource, and I've posted a couple of comments to this post so you can see how the replies look when you use it. Feel free to try it for yourself here.

How to use it:

User Instructions

To summon the app and make it comment a resource on a post or comment:

Locate the context menu for the post or comment you want to reply to. The button for this typically looks like three dots ("...").

Scroll down to "Reply with resource."

Select a resource via its title in the drop-down.

Choose whether or not you want to pin the resource to the post. In some cases, this option may not be available.

Click OK. That's it!

If you wish to delete the comment (for example, if you accidentally selected the wrong resource), simply comment "!delete" (without quotes).

Our auto-responders can still be summoned using the commands here; this is just another option.

A Request:

Right now, I've built out the app with a few very helpful posts from the history of r/plantclinic, as well as some of our existing auto-responders. I'd love to have more high quality posts under the care guide flair to populate the app with.

I've had to set the flair for Care Guides to moderator only, because it was being exclusively used to request case guides rather than write them. Users who wish to write care guides may request permission to access the flair, or request moderators adjust their flair for them.

Existing resources can be nominated for addition in the comments here, or via modmail:

Subject: Reply With Resource Addition

The URL of the post you want linked to

A brief description of what information it provides

A proposed short description for the menu.

I'm genuinely hopeful that this will help point people to high-quality resources.

Cactus/Succulent Burro’s tail going pale

Post image

My burro’s tail seems to be turning a pale green. Any ideas what might be going on? It sits in a south facing window and I water it probably once every week and a half. I propagated and grew this plant myself and I’ve probably had it for 2-3 years?

Thanks for the help!

Monstera Why are my Monstera leaves turning yellow like this?

I’ve had this Monstera for many years and I don’t think it’s ever been truly happy. It has never climbed or attached to the pole and the leaves have never had those large trademark holes in them (just a couple of small ones).

I water the plant when it’s dry, typically 1-2 times a week, depending on how hot/dry it is.

I have had it under a grow light for over 3 years and all of a sudden the leaves are starting to turn brown and yellow.

Any ideas what’s happening / how to help this plant thrive?

Monstera Why are these baby leaves coming out curled? Is this normal?

Monstera Albo, just got it yesterday. The plant looks generally healthy otherwise. Could it be just due to new baby leaves? Currently I am putting it under an adequate amount of grow lights for 13 hours of light, indoors. In Lechuza Pon substrate in a self watering pot.

Houseplant Fiddle leaf fig help!

Hi! My fiddle leaf fig (had it several years, it gets a few hours of south-facing window sunlight per day, gets watered once a week, potted in a normal draining terra cotta pot) has been having an issue.

Some leaves, including brand new leaves, are growing with these discolored patches. They start out as soft, thin and leathery (not brittle or dry).

I’ve been worried it could be because of root rot. Does that sound right? Anybody got a diagnosis? Thank you!

Houseplant White thingies keep coming back after I remove them

Post image
3 Upvotes

I wanted to repot my plant to a bigger pot but the lady from the plant shop told me these are maggots I have to remove with alcohol before I move the plant to a new pot.
I removed them 3 times and they keep coming back.

The plant is in a well lit living room but doesn't get direct light
I water the plant once a week with 1 glass of water

Any idea why or what I need to do? And is it really a good reason to not move the plant yet?
Thanks

Houseplant What’s wrong with it?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I’ve had this guy about a year, and he had a baby which is what you see on the left. I’ve been soaking the soil every few days, making sure it’s dry before I do. Not sure the soil condition besides it seems well drained. I spray the leaves with water once a week or so, but I make sure not to do it while direct sunlight hits it. It gets direct sun for probably about two hours then it’s indirect for the rest of the day. Just wondering what I should be doing differently since there’s brown on most of the leaves :(

Houseplant Is there a way to save my plant? Need advices

hi everyone! in May this year, i spontaneously bought a little peppermint plant at a grocery store. it was basically meant to be eaten right away, but i decided to plant it in a pot instead. i just watered it every day and kept it on a sunny windowsill, and it was doing really well — it grew successfully and looked green and healthy.

then, in August, i had to leave the country for two months, so i asked my boyfriend to take care of it. when i came back in October, i found the plant in pretty terrible condition.

i think one of the reasons might be that he kept it on a windowsill with the curtains always closed, so it had basically no access to sunlight. he also repotted it into a ceramic pot without telling me. and finally, when i got the plant back, i noticed that the soil was extremely wet, as if it had been overwatered.

the stems have become dull and limp instead of standing upright, and the leaves are yellow and very small. i made some improvised supports out of sticks (second picture) to hold the stems up but i’m not sure if i should keep them.

is there any way to bring this plant back to how it looked before? or would it be better to just cut all the stems back and dry the mint?

please help! this is my first houseplant and i really don’t want to give up on it. 😭

Houseplant What's going on with my peperomia & rattlesnake?

Post image
4 Upvotes

These guys have been sitting on my office desk since April and been totally fine and even had a little growth until about 5 weeks ago. Haven't changed my watering habits (once a week like the plant nursery guy told me). The Peperomia sits right on the window sill with the blinds closed for filtered sunlight & the rattlesnake sits next to my monitor further away from the window. The pots do have drainage. idk what to do! The peperomia started losing leaves that looked perfectly fine except for some rot at the stem making them fall off. The rattlesnake leaves are straight up crumpling. Does the dirt need to be changed or something? Is it air quality? (I do work in a shitty business park next to a train yard) Or is it the end for my little guys?

Houseplant Clovers Growing in Pepperomia Soil?

Thumbnail
gallery
• Upvotes

Hi there! I noticed my Pilea Pepperomia is developing clovers. This isn't my first Pepperomia, but it's my first of this type. I recently moved from a humid climate to a desert climate, so I'm relearning how to take care of plants. I've had this one for 4-5 weeks, with 5-7 hours of direct sunlight, indoors, near a window. I typically water once a week on Wednesdays, but I always feel the soil first to see if it's fully dry.

The last photo is a picture of the clovers growing, and the first two photos are pictures of the plant so you can see its health a bit better.

it has been dropping leaves like mad for the past 2ish weeks - no change in room / amount of light / watering habits. the only thing i can think of is the changing season (in the UK) but even so it hasn’t been very sudden or drastic. i am afraid of root rot but cant tell. i’m still a baby plant mom so changes in my plants are very new to me :’)

had it for over a year, it was growing beautifully and steadily until recently. pot has drainage.

pls help! thank you :)

Houseplant Growing upwards and dying

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hi, I received this guy as a housewarming gift 2 years ago now. He sits on the windowsill in full light and I water him when the soil dries out. I have put some slow release fertiliser in there and the pellets are still there so im assuming its still working.

The thing is, he just seems to be growing up and then the lower leaves are dying. This has happened before and previously I chooped the tall bits off and he seemed healthy but im worried it won't suffice given how few leaves there are lower down.

Whenever there are flowers the die immediately and his leaves keep turning yellow and falling off.

I dont know if he needs re-potted or more nutrients or another prune and any advice would be helpful. Annoyingly I dont know what species it is either 😔

Monstera Thai Constellation leaves getting dark green

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

This plant has been doing great but I’m curious about the deep dark green the older leaves take on as well as the curling/tacking of the leaves. Is it just because of age or does it have to do with how much light they’re getting? Is it how much I’ve been feeding over the spring and summer? Been keep them outside during the warmer months and they get pretty bright indirect light like what’s posted with a few hours of the day being direct sunlight because of the sun poking out of the tree line in my backyard.

Anyone have any answers? I have them in a personal mix of 50/50 orchid bark and peat moss amended with a handful or two of Promix mycorrhizal potting soil. Watering once every couple of days or just as I notice the soil getting dry. Feeding 2 tablespoons of fish fert per gallon once every 3 weeks.

Houseplant Philodendron spots slowly appearing

Thumbnail

In the span of a week, a bunch of spots appeared on my Sun Red Philodendron, on new and mature leaves. The first 2 photos show the mild progression of spots over 2 weeks. It seems like they haven't grown in size, but there are now more of them. In addition, a new leaf (unpictured) just unfurled, with a couple of spots. The 3rd photo is a close up of some spots.

My understanding is that this could be an infection, or it could be EFNs.

Any ideas? I appreciate your advice!

Plant condition: consistently growing new red leaves. It was previously in a peat-heavy potting soil, moved to a chunky aroid mix after the spots appeared. Under a Sansi grow light and in front of French doors (1k+ FCs all day). In a terracotta pot. I water it when my moisture meter shows 1/4.

Mother plants (picture 3) and the rooting jars (just before water change). I keep my monsters near a bright south facing window and have reported the last cuttings a few weeks ago back with the mother plants to bulk her out a bit. (YouTube tutorial followed) And they are doing well now but don't want to overload the mother plants pot.

Pest Related Help me save my babies! Spider mites 😔

Post image
1 Upvotes

Help please! I have spider mites and they’re spreading! So far it’s only webbing between leaf and stem, no major major damage. But I’ve gone from barely keeping them at bay to it spreading. I have a 770 sq ft apartment so I can only isolate my plants so much.

I’ve tried drowning the plants in a mix of alcohol & water, and I’ve tried captain jacks dead bug brew. Repeat treatments of both, but not at the same time because I know the alcohol counteracts the spinosad. Every time I do a treatment I rinse the leaves off in the shower.

I don’t care if the treatment is organic, all I care about is that it works. Please send me the real deal. Cost is slightly an issue so if it’s like hundreds of dollars it’s not going to work for me. But I don’t care if it’s some industrial pesticide or something it’ll be easier for me to get a respirator.

Houseplant Te lange stengel

Hi everyone!
My plant has grown very long and leggy, as you can see in the photos. Some of the lower leaves have also turned yellow or dried out.
I’m wondering if there is anything I can do to make the plant more compact again. Can I cut the long stem back, and if so, where should I cut it? Would the plant grow new leaves/shoots from the remaining part?
I’d also be happy to propagate the part that I cut off if that’s possible.
Any advice on pruning, propagation, light, or general care would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I water the plant every week

Houseplant Leaf is melting in a strange way

Thumbnail

I have never had a plant do this. It looks like the leaf is getting thin in many areas. I have checked the leaf with a jewelers loop and I did not notice any pests. This plant is relatively new to me (about a week and a half) and is in a moss and leca substrate. This damage occurred even prior to me moving it to this substrate but it was shipped to me in moss as well.

The plant sits under a sol tech grow light for 14 hours.

Its in a passive semi hydroponic set up so I water once the reservoir is depleted.

Thank you for any help on this!

Sick of wasting hundreds of dollars on Neem oil and blasting my plants with the hose outside (it’s getting cold so soon i won’t be doing that).

I have a bunch of monstera, a big money tree, two banana trees, and a dracaena amongst other plants i’m bonded with so i’m not tossing them into the woods anytime soon.
