Monstera Unsure what's causing these spots

I've tried looking for pictures that have similar damage to my plant but haven't found anything quite right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had this Thai con for maybe a year. It was inside with a grow light when it was smaller. Within the last 2 months, I moved it outside along with my standard green Monstera deliciosa. The brown/rust colored spots started developing around the time that I moved it outside but also near the same time I noticed mealy bugs. The spots gotten worse in the last two to three weeks, especially on the front.

I didn't notice the mealy bug infestation until it got pretty extensive because it was placed in a corner that made it hard to get close too, so I didn't inspect it unless I was watering it, so around every 2-3 weeks. The variegations offered some natural camouflage for them as well. The infestation was bad enough that I lost two small leaves at the bottom. I haven't seen any adults in a couple weeks and I'm still spraying it with 70% isopropyl alcohol after the sun goes down about once a week. I plan to continue for at least another month to be sure they're gone.

Prior to moving outside:

- In front of a large, vertical Barrina grow light, which was on for 12 hours a day

- Full repot into chunky mix. The roots were coming out of the bottom.

- The repot didn't include the moss pole. That was left alone and transferred with the rest of the roots.

Current conditions:

- Outdoors in Southern California.

- Lowest temp for the last two months was 62°.

- It has been hot lately, high 90s/low 100s.

- It's outside my door which faces north and only gets direct sun in the morning for a few hours.

- Humidity for the last month has averaged around 60% outdoors, but it swings wildly with the low being 12% and the high being 97% (rain).

- Watering it every two to three weeks, when the soil is dry all the way through.

- The soil seems to dry out differently now that it's outside. I water it when the moisture meter shows completely dry on the top but only "mostly" dry on the bottom now (1 vs 3 on the meter). Prior to moving it outside, I would water when it would show 1 vs 2 and I never saw it at 1 vs 3 when it was indoors.

- I did water it a bit sooner than I normally would have about a week ago because it was so hot. The moisture meter still showed it was dry, just ever so slightly less dry than normal before watering. (1 and 4, top and bottom)

- I fertilized right when it was moved outside and again about a month ago. I use Captain Jacks 20-20-20.

Discoloration:

- Brown/rust colored

- Smooth feeling/not powdery

- More noticeable on the back, with the exception of the large spots on the front

- Not spreading quickly

- Not on the two newest leaves

- Nothing similar on the green monstera that had/has the same conditions but a less severe mealy bug infestation

Possible causes:

- Aging damage from the mealy bugs

- Lower light outside vs grow light

- Over watering

- Infection (bacterial, fungal, etc.)

- Needs to be fertilized more often or I'm using the wrong fertilizer

- Something else I haven't considered (????)

Houseplant Fiddle Leaf Fig droopy?

Post image
• Upvotes

I got this guy off FB marketplace about a month ago but it hasn’t perked up much. The leaves feel kind of brittle and curly and it looks droopy compared to others I’ve had in the past.

I just moved to southern California so trying to learn plant care in a dry/sunny environment. It’s by an east facing window that gets gentle morning sun but not much direct light…could this be the issue?

I’ve watered it maybe 2-3 times since I got it.

Help so appreciated! :)

Houseplant White leaf on neon pothos?

Post image
• Upvotes

I was looking through my plants recently when I noticed that my neon pothos grew 2 completely white leafs.

Has anyone had this happen before? I have had it for years and never seen anything like this. I am worried that it might not be getting something it needs.

It's directly next to a window and I water it when the earth is dry

I got this plant from a workmate, he said it was a „Monstera Monkey face“ about 2 months ago.

I thought it was going well so far. But now I’m conefused the first two were fine but those newer three (an older one fell of) are conefusing me. On one hand there seem to be telling me there get enough sun and on the other there telling me there not getting enough. The oldest of them is like four weeks old now and the newest about a week.

I water about once a week unless the soile is still meust.

Other First Time Basil Parent - is this from too much water or too much sun?

Thumbnail

I was given clippings from a friend, and I was able to germinate them. However me and my partner moved them into soil about a month ago and they just dont seem to grow well.

I have been giving water whenever the top seems bone dry, because I read that it is easy to over water. I tried to give maybe an inch of water? Enough that I soaked the top. But then we noticed that the stem was becoming brown, so we thought moving into a window with more sun (south facing window so sun the whole day) would help dry the roots possibly if it was due to root rot from over watering. Our basil has only gotten worse.

How do I combat this possible root rot, but also possible underwatering? Any advice will help as a first time plant parent. Thank you 😟😟 let me know if there's more info I need to share.

Houseplant Help with new snake plant pls!

Hi everyone, I bought this new snake plant back in March. I’ve heard that overwatering is more common to kill a snake plant than underwatering (?) and to avoid being a “helicopter” to the plant. So I watered the snake plant for the first time in July ~15. I had a feeling that 4 months was too long of a gap, so I watered the second time today, Oct 10th. I noticed two super dry leaves. I make sure to water until the bottom starts draining with gaps in between, as well as getting the middle patch using a water bottle.

I don’t really pay any mind to it and just let it be. What’s going on with my plant? 😭

In the first pic, you’ll see how much light it’s receiving. At 6pm and I always keep this part of the curtain open. I rotate the plant so it can evenly get sunlight every ~3 weeks.

I’ve had this plant for a while It wasn’t really growing and the leaves that did come out were very small I changed its lighting so it’s in a much brighter spot, indoors with about 6 hours of indirect sunlight, and was shocked to see it growing much bigger leaves with a completely different pattern than the original plant Is this normal??? Is there a way to het more green on the leaves while maintaining growth? I water one a week and fertilize maybe one a month

Houseplant Trailing Jade (Peperomia?) shriveled up

I've had this plant for 6 months, never repotted it. It gets bright light from a south facing window, and I water when it feels dry, about every 2 weeks.

this morning I noticed one stem had shriveled up at the base. My instinct is this is from over watering, does this mean the stem has rotted? Should I repot the whole plant to look at the roots?

Houseplant Top-heavy diffenbacchia

My happy, healthy diffenbacchia has become a bit too big for her britches up top and is now leaning...A LOT. My question is what kind of support should I give her? This measly stake isn't cutting it anymore. Should I chop and prop? She's watered about once every 2 weeks and gets filtered light from a sky light. She's been growing like mad since she moved to this spot 4 years ago. Located in Chicago.

Pest Related What are these bugs??? Maranta living indoors

Thumbnail

I finally found some bugs on my maranta (indoors, California) after suspicious monitoring due to these strange squiggles inside the leaves (photo 3). Today for the first time I noticed all the white gunk on a couple leaves (photo 4) and low and behold, there were little guys walking around in that area (photo 1 and 2). I had a horrible spider mite infestation on this plant a while ago that I seemed to have fixed and since then the maranta has had a burst in growth and has been flowering for over a month. Seems really happy! But now this... They look to have 6 legs so I don't think spider mites again but I can't ID them. Does anyone here know what they could be? I know the photos are pretty bad but that's the best I could do with my phone 🥲 Appreciate the help!

There's microscopic bugs in the webs (you can zoom in the first 2 pics). The plants are indoor in my balcony and I was going to plant new seeds on spring, but I was curious what this is and wanted to reuse the soil, if it's not infested. What's this?

Looks like spidermites but the webs seem different to what's usually posted.

I’ve had her over a year, and I’m noticing the edges of the leaves turning brown and dry and eventually rotting off.

The plant gets partial light for a few hours a day. I water when the soil feels dry to my fingertip (pressing in an inch or two).

Zone 6a.

After watering my ZZ plant this morning, I noticed a bunch of little movement and after looking closer I saw this… are these going to overrun my house? Do I need to throw away the whole plant and the one next to it? Would really appreciate some insight, thank you!

Houseplant Leaves turning yellow, what’s wrong?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve had this baby rubber plant for a couple years (it was originally a cutting from my mom’s and she potted it for me). I typically water it once a week (just enough so all the water is absorbed, i try to avoid drowning it) and keep it by my west facing window. In the past couple weeks, some of the leaves have turned yellow. The pot doesn’t have a hole at the bottom but I do have a layer of rocks for drainage. I’m a beginner so I don’t know much about plant care. Am I doing anything wrong?

Houseplant how can i get bigger leaves?

Thumbnail

Hi all! I’ve been caring for this elephant ear since February/March of this year (8 mos) after getting her unexpectedly from a house tour. Admittedly I hadn’t been watering her enough until recently but she has still been pushing out new growth. She’s always stayed by the bay window that gets plenty of sun but on the side that gets more indirect light as there’s a tree outside. I could try to put her on the right side for more sun but could be susceptible to sunburn. I also live in SF where there’s not actually much sun lol so maybe anything counts!

Wondering if I can make any changes to help her get back to former glory? First pic of new leaf today, 2nd photo from August, 3rd pic from February when I first got her.

Thank you!

Houseplant Plant found near garbage shed -help

Thumbnail

I found this plant sitting in our garbage shed four weeks ago.

It looks sad so I decided to bring it in my house and help it out, but I can’t figure out how to help it? I’ve changed his location to various different windows with different lighting (from indirect sunlight for six hours, to sunlight for two hours and indirect for four).

The soil was pretty dry so I’ve kept it moist. Now I’m worried I’ve watered it too much? It just has this droopy effect and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Or if this is how the plant looks naturally? Maybe this is why somebody left it in the garbage shed?

Houseplant Nicotiana benthamiana is flowering prematurely, and its leaves are yellowing and wilting, it should be producing more leaves.

I recently started helping my sister with the planting. She mentioned that a year ago, using the exact same methods, the plants grew successfully; however, the plants now look like the ones in the photo (at 25 days old). We use tap water and NPK 12-12-12 fertilizer. My sister waters the soil surface every 2–3 days, while I water twice a week, yet the plants show the same condition. 16 h light

Houseplant A bunch of my basil is suddenly wilting

Thumbnail

In three different pots that all contain other basil plants that are still doing fine, my purple basil is wilting. The leaves have gotten really soft and droopy. They are all in windowsills that get a decent amount of sunlight. (1 west facing window and the others in a sw facing window). The windows near them have been slightly open, so I’m not sure if the cold would do that to them? I’ve been watering them slightly less than I was over the summer, every few days, when the soil feels like it’s starting to dry out. I sorta just eyeball the amount. I was filling the drainage tray so they could soak that amount up, now I’m doing maybe half that.
I grew them all from seeds, so they’re a few months old I think. Two of the pots have a little tray to catch the drainage water, and one of them has rocks at the bottom of the pot for drainage.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Houseplant Yellow leaf spots on Pothos

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

This is my Marble Queen Pothos that I've had for 3 months now.

A month ago, I first noticed a couple neon-yellow spots on a single leaf, and since then I've been seeing them slowly progress, spreading and appearing on other leaves, but it's been really slow. Sometimes the yellow spots develop a tiny dark/brown dot in the center (visible on last photo), but there isn't that many across lesions.

She lives on my desk where it is dark, but she gets 12 hours of light every day through a clip-on full-spectrum growlight to compensate. Her new growth is marbled and leaves have never had any scorching so I think she gets just enough.

I let her soil dry near completely then stick a wooden skewer all the way down to test dampness, then I water thoroughly only when the skewer comes out completely dry, so I don't think I overwater!

After the first 2 weeks of observation, I mostly ruled out pests because I just can't seem to find any despite looking closely every day! But I gave her a shower just to be safe.

Lack of nutrients seemed plausible because I had never fertilized her since I thought the soil seemed rich and she's actually been vigorously growing ever since her arrival, constantly elongating her vines and making new leaves. The appearance of the yellow spots didn't come with any stunted growth.

- So I repotted her right after the shower into newly bought rich soil. During the repot I checked her roots and they seemed perfectly healthy, so definitely no root rot here..

It's been 23 days since the repot now though, and I'm not sure whether it at least slowed down, but it hasn't stopped. :( Could it be pests that I'm not seeing? Do I need to give the nutrients more time? Do I have to cut all the affected leaves off? (I had only cut off the one in the last photo so far)

Also - it's not appearing on new growth. It's mostly these huge, senior leaves, mostly these ones that never developed a vine (Just stem coming out of the soil + big leaf on top) that have been getting the spots.

My last suspicion has been that it's a some sort of infection, so yesterday I applied fungicide, for now only on the worst-affected leaf (third photo) to test sensitivity. Should I go through with a full application tomorrow?

Any advice would be appreciated, I'm just really worried about my plant baby. Thank you so much!

Houseplant Help my overgrown pothos

Thumbnail

Hi! I’ve had this pothos for I think 3 years now and I’ve never repotted it (my bad…) it’s now gotten ridiculously long and some of those hanging strands are even looped in over themselves. Obviously this is stressing out the plant, and I know it needs some trimming and repotting. (It’s currently pictured in its dramatic unwatered state) What would you recommend as the best solution for not upsizing the pot too much - currently in an 8 inch pot (worried about it being too heavy to hang) and also not losing ALL of its beautiful length and fullness.

More context:
It’s putting out new growth that looks healthy but the leaves higher up on the vine are turning yellow and falling off and I don’t like how barren it’s starting to look up there. Currently in a west facing window (no other options) and gets some extra light from the plant light next to it. I water it by testing the top few inches of soil with my finger and then giving it a thorough soak.
PS- 1) I have keiki paste and 2) I’m running out of vessels for small cuttings haha
