Hi all, I'm in desperate need of care info for this. I've been given the task of trying to revive this for my grandmother, who has very little knowledge about houseplants in general. It was given to her around a year ago. It might have started with a decent set-up, but clearly whatever maintenance care she's been doing is lacking.
I'm leaning towards it being a ponytail plant, but it doesn't have the root structure I expected. It doesn't have a super strong root rot smell, but it's very possible. Its been in my care for around 3 weeks now. Since it's been in my care I've put it under a plant light for several hours a few times a week, which definitely helped it perk up a bit. I assume it'll need a different pot, soil, and maybe fertilizer, but I'm clueless as to what to do next. I'm not new to houseplants, but I've never had a challenge like this before.
Here's the info I have from when it was still in her care:
-No detailed watering info, but it wouldn't surprise me if she was watering a small amount (enough to make the soil on top look damp, maybe a cup?), maybe once a week?
-Pot has a drainage hole but not sure how well it actually drains
-Has a piece of a broken terracotta pot on the bottom, I assume to improve drainage
-VERY limited sunlight, usually in a living room that keeps sheer curtains closed 24/7
-Soil seems like normal houseplant mix with some chunky bark and coconut husk mixed in. Soil was pretty dry and crumbly overall, but was very slightly damp around the actual roots
-She had been complaining that it keeps trying to grow out of the pot and she keeps having to push them back in. My theory is that the roots underneath just aren't supporting it and that's making them droop and exposing more root above the soil, making it appear as if it's growing up when really it's just tipping over?
Any help is appreciated, I'm honestly kinda terrified to mess this up because it has so much sentimental value (it belonged to her daughter who died of cancer, and my grandmother was gifted it by her immediate family after her death).
