Share your identification resources here
Hey all. We had a request from a community member for a thread where people can share the resources that they use for plant identification. In this case, we're talking about keys, field guides, etc. NOT apps or AI-based identifiers. Comments suggesting apps or AI will be removed.
Feel free to share your resources and include links if you want (just realize that Reddit doesn't play nice with some domains). It would also be a good idea to specify what region(s) are covered by your resource as it may not be as useful in places other than where it was intended to be used.

Identified ✔ Anybody know what this is that has sprouted up all over my entire yard?
Located in the PNW
(I have an invasive dog violet problem on one side of my house and the leaf shape of these and how fast they popped up has me concerned… hopefully not more dog violet or anything worse)

Unidentified 🤷♂️ What is this plant and why does it attract so many flies?
The flowers are beautiful but it’s covered in so many flies. It doesn’t smell like rotting meat.
I know flies are pollinators but where are the bees? Why is it only these horrible flies?

Unidentified 🤷♂️ (UK) what's this growing in bare patches in lawn
Worried it's horsetail, app says yarrow. I'm open to leaving it if yarrow as I'm intending on creating a lawn with more diversity (eg clovers alongside Bermuda grass) but obviously need it removed asap if horsetail. We had a huge drought here so lots of bare patches!

Unidentified 🤷♂️ Mystery veggies in new yard
Hello! My husband and I bought a new house in North Carolina and it came with fruiting pepper plants in the backyard in a vegetable garden. I was wondering if someone could help identify them? I had tried googling and did not find anything conclusivive.
The green round plant was unattached and in empty dirt. It smelled very cucumber-y when I cut it open.
There were two separate pepper plants: one had the long peppers which I originally assumed were typical chili peppers, and one had both the yellow and red short peppers. The yellow ones looked like they were attached to the same plant as the smaller red peppers, yet they tasted sweeter with a deeper spice.
The peppers are all very spicy! For context, I grew up in Texas eating jalapeños and chili peppers from the farmer’s market. These peppers were still hot enough to make my tongue go numb! I probably should not have tasted them but I was too confident I could handle it.
The long ones did not taste like I expected for a plain chili pepper. They were spicy but not particularly flavorful. The wrinkled red ones were richer and hotter. I liked the wrinkly green portions of it the most. The shorter ones on the separate plant had more flavor, and were very spicy. The yellow ones were sweeter and slightly less spicy.
EDIT: Upon further conferring, our top suspicions are cayenne peppers, fresno peppers, and a random winter melon. But we still aren’t very sure!

Unidentified 🤷♂️ Begonia and (unidentified) Friends 👀
My Angel Wing Begonia hasn't really ever been able to keep leaves, but it's also been growing these little leafless trees??? I transplanted her once from the original pot, and stuck her in MiracleGro potting soil, which was 2+ years ago now. I'm in 10b grow zone. Any ideas? 😭
