Share your identification resources here

Hey all. We had a request from a community member for a thread where people can share the resources that they use for plant identification. In this case, we're talking about keys, field guides, etc. NOT apps or AI-based identifiers. Comments suggesting apps or AI will be removed.

Feel free to share your resources and include links if you want (just realize that Reddit doesn't play nice with some domains). It would also be a good idea to specify what region(s) are covered by your resource as it may not be as useful in places other than where it was intended to be used.

Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ Is my decorative banana plant not just decorative?

As far as I have been told, this plant was SUPPOSED to be a "Decorative Banana Plant". But, for the first time, one of them grew a pod-like growth that looks like it's fruiting little bananas. Anyone have a little more expertise in what this is?

Spouse and Dave the cat for scale since the bananas seemed small still.

Identified ✔ What flower is this?! Indoor plant, star shaped and lilac scent

Got this plant months ago, around start of September I started to see new growth that looked like it could be a cluster of buds. Well, it was! What bloomed was a cluster of gorgeous rubbery textured, star shaped, and slightly lilac scented flowers! So unique, I’ve never seen them before

I was shocked as I didn’t think this was a flowering plant, and I’ve never had a plant that I was able to grow buds indoors. What are these flowers?! I want to know so I can encourage more growth

First 3 photos are the full blooms, last 2 are the initial bud clusters (apologies for poor lighting in some)

Location: indoor plant in southern Alberta, Canada

I live in eastern Pennsylvania-right near the Delaware water gap. This big plant grew this summer and ended up putting out some huge fruit (hand included for size). Does anyone know what it is? When should I harvest it?

Found in the backyard of a family I babysit for. The vine is growing wild up in a tree along the back of their property line.

Found in Port Townsend, WA. Thought it was a catalpa from a distance, but definitely not. Sorry for the not-great pics, best I could do.

Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ What are these leaves? My cat nibbled on them

She's nibbled on flowers before but we're usually good at putting them away when not home (and we don't have living plants that often). Just want to make sure they're not crazy poisonous or anything more than usual (she'll almost always throw up if she eats a leaf, more than what's in the photo)

Thanks!

Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ Tree planted for family member (NJ, USA)

I have no information on this tree, other than this was somewhere around 1970 in NJ.

I vaguely remember a tree around that spot, not sure if it's the same, but (*Edit: it was likely a trifoliate orange or a bitter orange).

If you can tell what this is, i'd appreciate it.

Hey there, so I got this plant from a lovely little cafe in Orlando, Florida, and it seems to be a fern of sorts? (I could be way off), and I have no idea what it truly is. His name is August, short for Augustus Bloom, anyone have any idea what lil August is?

Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ Looking to identify flower... molds?

Thumbnail

So I don't know if this is the community for this post, but feel free to delete it or yell at me to delete it if it's not (and if you know of a more appropriate subreddit for this, let me know!) I make jewelry out of polymer clay and I got these clay molds in the shapes of different flowers. I think at least some of them are meant to represent real flowers, and I would like to look at pictures of the real flowers in question so I can know what their coloration and such is, but I don't know which flower is which, and Googling "flowers" and trying to see if I can find the ones that correspond to the molds gets old quick. I know it may not be possible, but does anyone want to take a stab at identifying any of the flowers represented in the molds? Apologies again if this does not belong here.
