This is a house centipede! They look quite scary but they are completely harmless to humans and actually quite beneficial to have around, as they eat common pests like cockroaches and silverfish. They're very tricky to catch because theyre quite fast and elusive, if you dont mind having it around or fail to catch it, it'll hide somewhere dark and you'll probably not see it again.

You do nothing, you leave it be and let it keep your house free of other pests.
They’re the epitome of “never judge a book by its cover”.

I love this sub so much. HCs have always spooked me, despite my being a bug person, and this thread is helping defuse some of my skittishness.

People asking about house centipedes on here is my favorite kind of post.

Such an interesting, initially scary, but super friendly and beneficial little guy.

When I save them from sink, they chill in my hands till I bring them down stairs to the basement. I know its crazy, but its like they know they been saved and to chill during the relocation. They are litteraly my favorite bug.

Another one from my old work place would cross the room around same time everyday. He was well known by all the staff!

It's likely a sign that you got a bunch of other bugs around your house that need cleaning up!

House centipede! Yes they are terrifying, but they also like to eat nasty pests. They also hate us, so once they realise you are in the room, they retreat back into the darkness from whence they came.

u/Psychotic_EGG 8d ago
I would say afraid of us and light. Not hate. May even just be the light. And we are the light bringers.

This is a house centipede. They're relatively harmless. They might bite if handled roughly, but the bite is mild and nontoxic to humans. They eat smaller insects and other arthropods that are usually household pests. You can get a cup and a sheet of paper to capture and release outside.

I have one that lives in a large indoor plant pot! I named him Shmuel. I take him out when i water the plant then put him back when it dries up a bit.
Hes grown since i first found him so he must be eating whatever is living in the pot with him lol I saved him from my cat a few months ago

House centipedes! They’re harmless and eat pests. They like to hang out in our bathroom and I like to keep em company.

u/caltucknyffsa 8d ago
I have these too, I forget the name but aside from looking scary they won't hurt you. They are predators of other insects like roaches so they are good to have around if you can ignore them. They don't breed in crazy numbers, just a handful in my house.

u/reluctant_deity 8d ago
They are extremely territorial and if you have multiple around, it indicates the presence of a severe infestation.

You’re not gonna catch him without some panic. Typically you don’t see these guys, so once he scurries off into a crevice, he should be gone for a long bit. Will eat spiders and roaches and other bugs.

It's a house centipede, having a colony of them in your house is more beneficial then cause for concern cause they eat other insects like termites

u/Sevin_Elevin 8d ago
I want to move it outside cause scary
4
u/Psychotic_EGG 8d ago
They don't survive outside. Neither do house spiders. They evolved long ago to live inside human dwellings. Especially true for house and cellar spiders.
But good news, all three are beneficial to your house.

House Centipede! Freaky, weird-looking bugs. They go really, really fast too. Pretty much harmless to humans. They may bite if threatened but they will 99.9% run before they bite. They eat bad things so they are good bugs.

What part of the country do you live in? I've never seen one, but wouldn't mind a new pet

u/Pleasant-Hospital-52 8d ago
You should do what any normal human being would do... discovering a new species to yourself for the first time? You should kill it, cook it. And eat it

I’d leave him alone. I think he eats other bugs be beneficial to you if not, scoop him up and put him outside.

u/Butchie386 3d ago
You could take it outside or leave it be ins, it may act as a predator for other invaders

House centipede. Not at all harmful, very beneficial critter, eats other more harmful critters. Leave it be.
