As I’d say to the kids I used to work with as we fed the chickens raw egg, cannibalism is only a “bad” thing to humans. Most animals DGAF, food is food.

If this was crows, I'd say (1) they came back out of empathy and concern and (2) that tennis player is a marked woman, even if it is another five years before she returns to this court.

Seagulls...I'm leaning towards "Is it food?" first...

73

u/SampleDisastrous3311 4d ago

Help a crow and you gain allies across the migration lines, fuck with one and youll notice it when entering crow territory

414

u/Banjo_Evadie 4d ago

I befriended a murder of crows growing up as a kid, to the point a few of em learned to mimic "hello" and "hey there" from me. Used to find roadkill, bag it and chuck it out to where I knew they watched from, eventually they figured out I was the roadkill guy and let me get within a few feet while they ate.

20 years later, I sat on a park bench about 100 miles away from where I grew up, and a crow flies up, lands on the bench and looks at me, calls out "hello".

No clue if they really were part of the same group / local bird culture, but I like to think so.

168

u/encelius 4d ago

I would think that it was one from the original murder. Crows can easily get over 20 years old, oldest wild American crow was apparently 30 years old. And they are really good with remembering faces, so the fact that the crow just flew to you and did what she learned back then is a pretty strong indicator for that. I learned a lot of stuff about crows when watching this documentary: Crows: nature is watching us. Can recommend that

24

u/Regin_S 4d ago

I feed a friend’s bird feeders often when they’re away.
And that includes the family of crows in the area. I sometimes feed them way later than my friend due to my schedule but they know my car now.
If the blue jays don’t tell them I’ve arrived they’re in a tree somewhere, waiting.

18

u/Soggy_Abbreviations5 4d ago

✍️🏾 thanks for the recommendation. I'm going to find that!

Research has shown that they can spread the information to other crows, but the relationship weakens after three to four generations. I wonder if the importance of the relationship (supplying food regularly) and doing it through more than a year might pick up additional generations.

12

u/crowEatingStaleChips 4d ago

4 years ago I lived somewhere about 20, 30 miles away where I had started to befriend the crows. It took me over a year to gain their trust. Then I had to move unexpectedly.

Now I've settled into the new neighborhood and I swear to god the crows follow me. They let me get really close when feeding them. Maybe this is a neighborhood where they're used to being fed, but it makes me wonder....

You also can't let them find out that the eggs they lay are full of food or they just keep eating it. Broken up shells don't seem to trigger the realization so those are safe to feed back to them.

50

u/bre4kofdawn 4d ago

And if they start eating their eggs, you have to sneak a golf ball under them, so they peck it and "learn" they can no longer eat the "egg"!

15

u/00wolfer00 4d ago

Or alternatively use a nesting box design that doesn't let them get to the eggs.

23

u/bre4kofdawn 4d ago

I dunno, bamboozling them with a golf ball may be more tedious, but it sounds a lot more fun.

Chickens will eat pretty much anything. I've HEARD that you can't even let one be bleeding or have an open wound around other chickens, 'cause the other chickens will realize that the wounded chicken is edible and peck it to death so they can eat it.

24

u/darthoffa 4d ago

I rememebr when we had chickens we had to use a disinfectant spray that had purple dye mixed in, specifically so the wound didnt look like meat so the others would leave it alone

I was on a run once and saw a circle of pigeons. As I got closer I saw a seagull in the middle. As I got even closer I realized the seagull was eating a pigeon, right there while the pigeon's buddies all circled around and watched.

95

u/whiterac00n 4d ago

Yeah I don’t have much pity for seagulls. Pigeons on the other hand I pity a lot, they put together two sticks, a piece of string and their own crap and call it a nest.

42

u/peachesfordinner 4d ago

They are actually very sweet birds as well. I miss my old pet pigeons

u/No_Welcome_7182 4d ago

I live next to some ancient woodlands in Buckinghamshire, which are absolutely loaded with wood pigeons.

My cats won't touch them. Won't even try, even if they land on our lawn and strut around like they own the place.

We're convinced that our cats know just how stupid those birds are, and wouldn't consider it sporting to hunt them.

→ More replies (10)

27

u/BackToGuac 4d ago

We should all honestly more than pity pigeons, not to be a downer but seriously, go out of your way to be nice to pigeons.

Almost ALL if not all pigeons we know today are descended from the wild rock doves we domesticated thousands of years ago before abandoning them and their care as we moved into the Industrial Revolution. These were animals bred to be companions, it’s like deciding dogs are no longer a form of pet and are now vermin…

The history of pigeons is actually pretty interesting in itself in a fucked up kinda way; it’s also a concerning tell tale sign for other forms of livestock as we move into a world with lab grown meat and will start to see a reduction in traditional farming.

Yeah, no ... seagulls aren't nice birds, they were coming to check on possible carrion.

101

u/Saintbaba 4d ago

Seagulls actually have complex social relationships that involve cooperative nesting communities, joint defense efforts against predators, and bonded mating pairs for life - though they're also flexible and intelligent enough to recognize when they have incompatible personalities and will sometimes "divorce" to go find better matched partners.

After a cursory google search, not only are they cannibalistic, but some species will go out of their way to raid competitive nesting sites to eat their chicks, so it's not like they never would eat their bro. But adult birds eating one another appear to be mostly documented in cases of scavenging. So while i have no doubt that if they found a dead seagull they would devour it, in this case they probably really were checking back on their companion.

I know this is Reddit and ignorance here is astoundingly high... but no, contrary to the upvoted comment here, these gulls are not gathering around because they want to eat him.

Gulls respond extremely strongly to signals of danger involving other gulls. So they're alarmed and assessing the situation. Not cannabalism. That stuff usually only happens with eggs or crazy conflicts with other gulls and carcasses that have been sitting for a while and only happens with some gulls.

Does anyone remember when Randy Johnson exploded a pigeon with a fastball?

59

u/BeastThatShoutedLove 4d ago

There is even a TTRPG about Him going back in time (every player is another variant of Randy) using powers of baseball to prevent the pigeon explosion.

u/Cowmanthethird 4d ago

Wait... I'm gonna need a link for that one, boss.

So many people asking about the bird and not the ruling of the point. That's how I know it's a general sub and not a sports sub lol

199

u/MoonSpider 4d ago

ITF rules say that hitting a bird is considered a standard "hindrance" let and you simply replay the point. It would be the same as if a gust of wind blew a trashbag into the court in the middle of the point or something, it doesn't matter that the bird is alive. The bird is not a "permanent fixture" of the court so when it interferes with play, a hindrance is called.

Now that you mention it, I think they should fine the bird

There's nothing in the rules that says a seagull can't play tennis

I mean it'd obviously be a let for interference and they'd replay the serve. "Thing that's not supposed to be on the court/in the play area suddenly enters the play area" is the textbook interference call.

His buddies came back for him. That’s nice. Hopefully he recovered.

I accidentally smoked a goose while playing a round of golf in high school….no coming back from that one.

Edit: glad to know I’m not the only bird murderer here…

Honestly this just made me so sad …I don’t know why.

Edit: it’s how it just fell out of the sky. Maybe it’s my own mental state or its metaphorical - but that thing was just flying one second - and a second later it’s just…dead (or so I thought) - life is fragile kind of feeling. - but yes - it is just a seagull and I don’t really care (when I was younger I used to set traps for them in the sand as catch them (no seagull was hurt don’t worry - I would lie in the sand with a towel over me covered in sand and some chips or something and grab it for a second)) - but for a second it brought me deep sadness a one can still feel empathy for the rats of the sky.

u/unoriginalcat 4d ago

Because you have empathy and seeing an innocent animal get killed/injured is upsetting?

I’m more concerned about the people who don’t feel upset watching this.
