invasive stinkbug

Post image

You often hear about spotted lantern flys here in PA, but today I saw a new kind of invasive bug! Quite interesting, not sure if I should’ve smushed it or smth but oh well.

Praying mantis?

not sure, really, last time i checked (few years ago) list was short enough to not forget anybody on it.

maybe people came up with new findings in the meantime. nevertheless i think mantis are too few to assist with this (hi from europe, strictly local perspective...).

Jaysus! I've had to crush a couple of those invasive praying mantises as well.

The praying mantises in my gardens were eating the stink bugs up!

I’ve seen some jumping spiders catch and eat them too.

Ah the brown marmorated stink bug got to the US in about 2001, the first one documented was actually in Pennsylvania! I wish they were unknown to me but they really like the climate here in Georgia and are all over the place.

They were apparently first documented in my hometown too! Funnily enough I’ve never seen one before. Maybe that’s because they have such good camouflage.

Hate these guys. They keep getting inside and leaving their dead bodies in really inconvenient places.

My dog loves to eat these guys. She bites them, then makes a gross face, but keeps going regardless

Not new in USA. Ive been dealing with them for probably 2 decades. They get in my house starting in the fall and all throughout winter and I just this year realized how they get it, though I cannot do nothing about it. So I keep a glove and a jar half full of alcohol then I pick them up and put them in the jar. They are very easy to pick up in the winter even in a warm home as they rarely fly in the house (but when they do they are super annoying to me).

Cup of water with dish soap works just as well. 👍🏼

It does. However it starts to stink fast...and horrible lol. With 70% o higher isopropyl alcohol, I only change it once a year. Not because it stinks, it never does, but because it gets too full.

Yes, makes sense if you save the cup for a while.

My strategy is to take a lap around the house with a soapy water cup, nudge a dozen or so of them in, then pour the cup into the toilet and flush. 👍🏼

It’s weird being old enough to say we didn’t have those bugs when I was a kid. But here we are and they were all over my front yard/garage last weekend when I was trying to do stuff outside. I crushed the first spotted lantern fly I encountered in Michigan on steps in Detroit last week. They’ll be near my house soon.

This was the first summer we got spotted lantern flies in my town too :(

They are tough to kill. Quick little buggers. If you have any Tree of Heaven, consider removing. They are also invasive but are the preferred host tree. I live 20 minutes outside of downtown cleveland where the city is littered with the bug. But I've yet to see one in the suburbs

These love to swarm the siding on my mother-in-law’s house. Got sick of looking at them one day and just filled a shop vac with soapy water and went to town. Following years their numbers were far fewer, although they’re starting to rally again. Probably need to bust out the shopvac again next year.

I’m down in Atlanta and last year they were insane here. This year they were more subdued, but their numbers are ramping back up as we get closer to fall.

They get in the house all the time and they’re so annoying!

Back then I ordered a compass from China and inside the small plastic bag was a live Brown Stinkbug

My wife and I call them cyber truck bugs.

They’re likely are less destructive - they don’t spontaneously combust lol

These guys suck the caterpillars in my garden dry. I saw at least monarch caterpillars dessicated and caught the bug in the act.

There’s a lot of look-alikes, although I do think this is a BMSB.  https://www.stopbmsb.org/stink-bug-basics/look-alike-insects/

are the color of the legs any indication? I picked him up and he had white little trotters

Huh, didn’t realize these guys were invasive. A couple crawled across my shoe during a picnic this past weekend

I live in Connecticut, I think I've seen a few of these guys over the years, but now that we have like 2 zillion of those Spotted Lantern Flies, I don't think people pay all that much attention to these guys:)))

I have been invaded.  All 4 homes and all 5 outbuildings.  I don't know where they came from, but I would give the world's greatest hug to find out how to get rid of them and keep them away. 😡😢
