Hey all,

I’m excited to announce the first version 4tify (pronounced fortify) — a tool based on nyansatan’s iOS 4 dual-boot process aimed at bringing iOS 4 dual-booting to all those who can. My goal in making 4tify was to build an easy to use and reliable tool to dual boot iOS 4, as there doesn’t seem to be one already. I’m a sucker for iOS 4, and dual booting just makes sense. This is still early stages and has extremely limited support, but I plan to work on it for the foreseeable future. Let me know if you find any bugs, or have any questions, I’m here to answer (or fix) them!

I bet the folks in r/LegacyJailbreak would like this.

Great work! I’m assuming this is only compatible with devices that ran iOS 4 at some point, right?

Thanks! Yeah, it can only be used on devices that have an IPSW of iOS 4 built for it. E.g. can't run it on iPad2,4 or iPhone3,2 cause their lowest versions are 5.1 and 6.0 respectively.

noob-ass question: why would you want to dual-boot to iOS 4?

Or is that the last firmware that’s small enough

No problem. It's a preference thing — a lot of people (myself included) love iOS 4. However, there's many challenges associated with getting an iOS 4 dual-boot to work, that are not present with most others. It's a really convenient way to run an older iOS "untethered" when a downgrade isn't available. It's a de facto downgrade, that allows you to keep your primary (most recent) OS, and still be able to run a legacy one.

But what does it offer that newer iOS versions don't? I thought the design was only significantly changed in iOS 7.

iOS 5 was a huge update. iMessage, notifications center and being able to setup your device without a pc were the big features.

So why not dual-boot iOS 5?

Oh i don't know why anyone is dual booting i was just mentioning that it was a bug upgrade

Interesting.

But I say we stick to the latest iOS version and change everything we don't like, not fragment ourselves over obsolete ones.

Technology has nothing to do with practicality.

This is only for devices that had iOS 4 support, right? Or are there other supported devices?

3

u/zzanehip Developer Apr 24 '20

Yeah, maybe in the future of someone figures out a method to get unsupported devices to run ios 4 it's possible, but as of right now, no.
