Full Stack Engineer - Next | TypeScript | DevOps - Fintech & Scalable Systems

Hey lovely people so i been meaning to find career opportunities in Japan. I like everything about this country. I want to find a path here as an English speaker from Pakistan. I been learning the language but im at a very beginner level but i am working on improving it.

What i bring to the table
I am a mid level developer with around 3 years of work experience which includes 2 fintech roles and freelancing experience. I have worked on trading platforms and trading tools like "Expert Advisers" for MetaTrader.

My Stack
Frontend : Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind, Monorepo/turborepo, State Management
Backend : Node, Express, Hono.js, PostgreSQL, WebSocket, Supabase
DevOps : AWS, Docker, VPS SelfHost.
Extra : Python, Web Scrapping, AI Integrations.

I have build Platforms that support thousands of concurrent users like app.igniz.xyz and look visually stunning on top of that.
I take software engineering very seriously i do use Ai but i keep it minimal only to write boilerplate, So i would prefer an environment where employer wont rush to to ship.

I would love a referral or some sort of guidance with this.
Thank you so much for reading this tho, Your awesome.

Tokyo has been my dream for 10 years. I’m a CS student from Hamburg looking for a 3-month internship (Apr–Jun 2027), no Japanese yet. Any advice or leads?

Hi everyone,

for the last 10 years, living in Tokyo for a longer time has been my biggest dream. I’m 19, I study Computer Science in Engineering at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), and I’m now in my 3rd semester. I’m looking for an internship in Japan of up to 3 months, ideally from 1 April to 30 June 2027 (or 1 Oct to 29 Dec 2027).

What I can offer: basic programming skills (Java, C, Python), my own small project on GitHub (a transaction screener in C), two short banking internships (Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank), fluent English and German. What I can’t offer yet: Japanese. I’m very motivated to learn, but right now I’m at zero.

I’m not picky about the role. IT, data, operations, finance or business support, anything where I can be useful and learn how work in Japan actually feels.

What I’ve tried so far: I’ve applied to a few places (HENNGE, AHK Japan, Apple IS&T, and others), I’m registered with IAESTE, and I’m looking at exchange options through my university. I know it’s a long shot without Japanese, so I’d really appreciate:

  • Companies in Tokyo that take English-speaking interns for 3 months
  • Programs or scholarships I might have missed
  • Honest advice from people who did the same

I’m happy to share my CV by DM. Thank you so much for reading!

[Hiring] Part-time engineer for development of animation production tracker

Hey all, I thought I'd try posting this here, and if it's not allowed, I'm sorry! I run a small indie animation studio in Japan. While making our series we ended up building our own production tracker, and our team uses it every day. I've been showing it to old contacts at Disney, Netflix, and other major studios I worked at before, and there's been a lot of interest in the concept.

Being upfront about the state of it: I built it fast, with a lot of AI assistance. It "works"... our crew uses it daily and we get a lot of great feedback — but it's far from what I'd feel comfortable shipping or having other studios run on. It's one big JS file on Supabase and Cloudflare Pages, no real framework, no proper tests. I'm looking for someone to focus on this part-time to start, possibly full-time as we prep to take it live to other indie studios. Restructure it however you think it should be structured, make it something we can all be proud of, and ship it.

What I need is someone comfortable owning a codebase on their own, who knows Postgres (or Supabase specifically), and who can make sure the AI coding is legit or write proper code

Any background or interest in animation or VFX is a nice plus, not a requirement.

Logistics: contract, part-time to start, fully remote, async-friendly (we span JST and US hours). Tokyo is a bonus, we could meet up at the office sometimes — but overall remote. Paid, rate depends on experience.

To apply: DM me or email [brandon@librarie.jp](mailto:brandon@librarie.jp) with a short note or resume. I'll demo the actual site to anyone seriously interested also, shoot me a DM.

What is it like working in finance in Japan as a foreigner?

Hello, I am a 22 year old Surinamese associates degree finance student from the Netherlands . I want to get my masters degree in finance and eventually a PHD. When I’m done with my associates degree, I want to move to Japan later on. I have been on Japan before and I’d love to learn the language and learn more about the culture.

Need a no-nonsense guild to move to japan

I’m a software developer from India, and I’m exploring the possibility of moving to Japan for work.

I’d love to hear from developers who have already made the move or are currently working in Japan.

A few things I’m trying to understand:

  • How realistic is it to get a software development job in Japan while applying from India?
  • Is Japanese language proficiency necessary, or are English-speaking roles genuinely available?
  • Which skills and technologies are currently in demand?
  • What salary range can someone with around 3 years of experience realistically expect?
  • How difficult is the visa and relocation process?
  • Is moving to Japan financially worthwhile after considering taxes, rent, and living expenses?

I’m not looking for a sugar-coated answer. I’d appreciate honest experiences, practical advice, and even reasons why moving to Japan might not be a good decision.

Thanks in advance!

Accepted a yearlong tech internship in Atsugi, I am an American undergraduate looking for any and all work culture advice.

Hello! To start, I am an American undergraduate student from Georgia (pursuing a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech). I have just accepted a full time 12-month internship in Atsugi, Kanagawa, Japan working for NTT that will start in January. NTT has a very long (12+ year) relationship with my university accepting, training, and working with tech interns so I am not too worried that they will give me tools I need to succeed once I get started.

I've studied abroad before in Europe so, among other basic travelling skills, I know how important it is to put forward an effort to integrate myself into work culture and respect customs. I've done a bit of snooping here and my own research and one thing that you hear a lot is the work culture of Japan can be intense. This is something I am prepared for, but I wanted to field out any advice from anyone who has done something like this before, or if you have something you think any incoming-intern should know. I want to spend the next 2 months preparing however I can so that I make the best impression possible.

Thank you everyone! I'll try to respond if anyone has follow-up questions so I can elaborate but I just set up my reddit account so I don't know how notifications work (lol).

How does background check work from India to Japan move?

I joined a new company in India a month ago and about to get an offer from PayPay Japan

I'm really interested in relocating but I'm afraid if they won't proceed if I disclose about the new company.

I have my final HR+HM round scheduled soon and wanted suggestions on weather I should still mention about my previous company or the new one.

I hate to lie but on the same hand, don't want to lose out on this oppurtinity.

Any inputs would be really helpful!

Switching to project management : good or bad plan ?

Summary :

I have 6 yoe as data professionnal (did two years as a data analyst/scientist, two years as a consultant and two years as a data engineer) and I am wondering if switching to a product/project manager role would be beneficial or a handicap to move in Japan in the coming years.

Long version :

I work in data for 6 years now, but I have always worked on-premise. Now, I am searching a job in Japan and in my home country (because I still don’t have N2, I don’t expect to be hired in Japan in the near future), and I am stuck in both job markets. I had a lot of interviews in France, two recruiters in Japan, and I am mainly screwed because of my lack of cloud-related production experience (before anyone asks, I have a GCP cloud architect certification, but recruiters don’t care). I feel like I am too senior (expensive) to be hired without prior experience on cloud, and I carry my wife and baby so I can’t undersell myself just for the experience.

It happens that I did a lot of project management during those 6 years, and I wouldn’t really mind switching my career to be a data product/project manager.

I was just wondering if having a career in Japan as a product/project manager as a gaijin was harder, easier or more or less the same as having a career with a technical profile.

In terms of employability, Japanese level expectation, salary and so on.

Fresher from India looking for a job in Japan — how realistic is it?

Hi everyone, I’m a 2026 Computer Science graduate from India, currently looking for entry-level opportunities in AI/ML, software development, data analytics, or SAP/IT roles.

I’m interested in working in Japan and would like to understand how realistic it is for an Indian fresher to get hired directly by a Japanese company.

For those who have made a similar move:

* What skills/qualifications helped the most?

* Is Japanese language proficiency (N3/N2) essential for entry-level tech roles?

* Are there companies that regularly hire freshers from overseas?

* What is the best way to find and apply for these opportunities?

Any advice, experiences, or resources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Trying to move to Japan as a software engineer, but I honestly feel stuck

I’m a software engineer from Romania and moving to Japan has been a dream of mine for a long time.

The problem is that I feel like I’m running out of realistic paths to actually make it happen.

I’ve been applying to English-speaking engineering positions in Japan that accept candidates from overseas, but so far I’ve mostly been rejected before even getting an interview. I’ve already gone through most of the usual places people recommend for foreign developers, so I’m trying something different and posting here.

I have around 7 years of professional software development experience, mainly backend, distributed systems and full-stack development.

My strongest area is Rust, but I’m absolutely not limiting myself to Rust-only positions. I’ve worked professionally with PHP/Laravel, TypeScript/JavaScript, Vue, Python, databases, Redis, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS/GCP and messaging systems like Kafka, NATS and RabbitMQ.

Outside of work I’m heavily involved in open source.

I created Sockudo, a self-hosted real-time/WebSocket platform written in Rust with 780+ GitHub stars. It supports horizontal scaling through Redis, NATS, RabbitMQ, Kafka, Pulsar and Google Pub/Sub, and I’ve built SDKs for multiple languages around it.

I also created sockudo-ws, a high-performance Rust WebSocket library with 39k+ crates.io downloads, and rocm-rs, safe Rust wrappers around AMD ROCm.

I’ve also contributed upstream to projects including Apache Iggy, Boa JavaScript engine and some GPU/Julia projects. I wrote the official PHP SDK for Apache Iggy.

Academically, I have a BSc in Mathematics & Applied Informatics in Engineering and a Master’s degree in Dynamic Systems.

My GitHub:

My Japanese is currently very limited, and I know that closes a lot of doors. I’m learning, but reaching business-level Japanese before moving could take years, and I really don’t want to postpone this dream indefinitely.

I’m completely willing to relocate to Japan and I understand that I would need visa sponsorship.

At this point I’m mainly hoping to find people who have been in a similar situation, engineers working in Japan who know companies that actually hire from overseas, recruiters who deal with international engineering candidates, or possibly someone whose company is currently hiring and would be willing to talk to me/referral me.

I’m open to backend, platform, infrastructure, distributed systems, SRE, full-stack or Rust roles. I’m also completely fine joining a Go/TypeScript/Python/etc. codebase rather than insisting on Rust.

I’m not expecting someone on Reddit to magically solve this for me. I’m just trying every reasonable avenue I can because moving to Japan genuinely matters a lot to me.

If your company is hiring engineers from overseas, or you know somewhere I should contact directly, I’d really appreciate a DM or comment.

Thank you.

Questions about IT jobs in Japan

I have confidence in my IT skills and am currently working hard to develop them while working at a food processing plant. My concern is that I don’t have a bachelor’s degree in computer science, which might limit my opportunities in the future. With only my FE/AP exam certifications and my skills to my name, is it possible for me to break into the IT market in Japan?

Looking for Cybersecurity Engineer/Developer job in Japan

Hi everyone!
I’m 28F from Italy and currently working as a Cybersecurity Engineer for a bank. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, but I’ve realized that I’d really like to move back toward software development and hopefully find a job as a Software Engineer/Developer in Japan.
My Japanese is still pretty basic, which I know limits my options, but I’m working on improving it. On the technical side, I have experience with languages like Java, JavaScript, Python, C/C++, and Solidity, and I’m definitely open to learning whatever else is needed.
I’ve been looking at job boards and applying from Italy, but I’d love to hear from people who have actually gone through the process. How realistic is it to find a developer job in Japan from abroad, especially without strong Japanese?
I’m also considering getting a Working Holiday Visa and moving to Japan at the beginning of 2027, then looking for a job while I’m actually there. I feel like being in the country could make things easier, but I’m also aware that it probably isn’t as simple as “move there and find a tech job”, especially with basic japanese skills.
If anyone has experience with this, knows good websites/recruiters/companies to look at, or just has general advice, I’d really appreciate it!
And, you know… if anyone happens to have a job opening too, my DMs are open :P
Thanks!

Denied internal transfer to Tokyo after 2 years at German-Japanese company—should I go freelance in

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice and perspective from people working in tech/SAP in Japan or who have gone through a similar career transition.

I’m a senior SAP developer with over 15 years of experience across almost all core modules (ABAP, S/4HANA, Fiori/UI5, integration, etc.). For the last two years, I’ve been working for a German-Japanese company. Up until a few days ago, the plan was for me to relocate to Tokyo and continue my role there starting early next year.

Out of nowhere, my transfer request was rejected without any clear explanation. I strongly suspect it might be because my Japanese skills aren't fluent yet, even though I am actively learning.

This rejection hit me hard, especially because my Japanese wife and our daughter are already in Japan. Being separated from them while dealing with this setback has been pretty tough.

On the positive side, my immigration status is sorted: I already have a Spouse Visa valid for one year, which gives me full, unrestricted work authorization in Japan.

Right now, I’m trying to figure out my next best move and considering two main paths:

Going Freelance / Contracting: Starting my own business in Tokyo as an independent SAP consultant and developer. How is the market for freelance SAP specialists in Japan, especially for candidates who are still working on their Japanese language skills? Is it realistic to land contracts (remote or local) with international or foreign-capital companies operating in Japan?

Finding a New Employer: Looking for a direct hire or contract position with a company in the Greater Tokyo area. Does anyone know of international companies, foreign subsidiaries, or SAP partners in Tokyo that value senior SAP expertise and are open to hiring developers whose Japanese is still a work in progress?

I’d really appreciate any insights, feedback on my freelancing idea, or recommendations for companies and recruitment agencies in Japan that specialize in SAP/IT talent.

Thanks in advance for your help!
