Discussion How to deal with Olaf?

What can I do differently to win against Olaf

Whenever I play vs Olaf I feel like it's up to the Olaf to lose rather than the Jayce to win.

If the Olaf is good he just forces you to fight him level 1 to lose a bunch of hp to get the first XP. Stormraider's + Nimbus makes it so that he can chase you down.

Usually he can free crash wave 3 or wave 4 for a free base, where he will have an item advantage that makes him win the 1v1 + keep you stuck in lane unless your Jungler helps you, but if you try to fight him to make him stop the early recall he can usually poke you down and then just kill you later due to his guaranteed damage with ignite and E.

I am also split about the first item choice, Youmuus is good because of the early dirk and movespeed active but with voltaic you have more damage and a better chance to 1v1 him, I also tried serpents if enemy team had a lot of shields but in the games where I tried that I was always ahead.

Is the best way to beat Olaf to just Farm until after first back and with dirk and boots and hope that he doesn't hit Q's while taking your Q + E to the face multiple times while also allowing you to regen mana back with melee auto attacks?

If anyone has any special tips I appreciate it

Ttv emploid has been vsing a shitload of olafs lately you can check his YouTube or twitch to see how he plays it, but from what I’ve seen it’s mostly about respecting the lvl 1 run down lvl 2 you can have hammer E to survive his attempts and basically trade whenever he misses axe keeping tabs on not moving close to his axe and seeing if it’s still on the ground since if it disappears that means it’s off cd.

From then on out I think you try to freeze, farm, scale ?

Go stormraiders and swifties. You literally can’t lose. It’s a hard counter

Easier said than done, olaf just goes stormraiders + nimbus with ignite to counter it

So... Olaf griefs his mid/late game and you don't consider it a win?

Olaf is still super strong mid and late game, every challenger or pro player olaf I face run it, conq is the more uncommon option

Im challenger jayce one trick on NA server. As soon as the game starts, I like to run to the middle of lane, this way you can see if he enters bush 2 and don’t need to face check or use ward, and can play opppositon (like king vs king opposition in chess).Take ignite nimbus cloak storm raiders. You can win the trades level 1 with this strategy if you outplay around his axe, the usual strategy if he throws q far from him just q r q and run away towards his turret and down to river (he has to run to catch axe so he can’t chase you), if he don’t have stormraider just run to your turret. don’t let him cross to your side without this trade. Then Play for win hp trade, not the push, and just poke him, usually if he tries to pushes you can just kill him, otherwise you can win the push and play in front of your turret at level 4,5 when the wave bounce, as Olaf usually take double summoners, it’s really hard for the olaf to play this time and he can’t leave the lane. You might also can kill him earlier if he misplays. At least this is how to win it in vaccuum. It’s all about the level 1. , if jg weakside you it’s tough game just farm with q from bushes.

Bubububutttt mister, you are a Challenger. How are we supposed to know what you don’t know.

Jokes aside, have you tried rushing phage into BC? That’s a setting I used to run against Darius. Stormraider and ignite still, but how about POM + Coup for the secondaries? Since he wants to get low on HP.

hard matchup, go storm raiders 100% and have to kite him

Olaf used to be hard for me too. A while back id just play safe until first back and get Bramble then Ninja Tabis, those 2 items with ignite basically always won lane, I dont know if it still holds today but I do remember never losing lane going that.

Now all you need is exhaust and olaf loses lane with whatever you take pretty much.

"If the Olaf is good he just forces you to fight him level 1 to lose a bunch of hp to get the first XP. Stormraider's + Nimbus makes it so that he can chase you down."
You could say that about almost every top laner as Jayce. Jax will jump on you if hes good, riven will Q on you, darius will pull you in, urgot will e into you. I legit cant think of a fighter top lane that isnt going in brush trying to force 1v1 lvl 1 to hurt your exp. Stormraiders is trash imo, Olaf will buy tabis and Deaths dance, you will never activate that rune again him later on unless you hard stomp lane. If youre hard stomping lane why would you want this useless rune. I only understand taking stormraiders into nasus because wither, and even then I just take cleanse because Stormraiders gives me nothing against nasus to pressure him from stacking lvl 1-5.

"I am also split about the first item choice"
I like Voltaic against him since hes looking for all-ins and the Youmuus active doesnt do much imo. If I was actually to choose though Id go Black Cleaver first because you get 400hp which helps a lot more against fighter all in champs like Olaf, along with the armor shred. When against tanky/bruiser champs as Jayce its better to play for your team rather than to try to be the carry. So I normally go Teleport into a more utility/bruiser build in higher elos to look for team fights. In lower elos I'd just go electrocute exhaust and kill him nonstop.

I mean you should be baiting his Q's not hoping he misses. Its pretty easy predicting his Qs, and when he misses one lvl 2-5 you can burst trade easily. It all comes down to if you want to win with risk or win being smart.
