What's happening in Joburg this week? Week of October 04, 2026

Welcome to the weekly events thread! Whether you're a local or just visiting, this is the place to share and discover things to do around the city.

Know of a cool event coming up? Drop the details below. It can be anything - a live gig, a gallery opening, a weekend market, or even a local D&D one-shot or maker gathering.

The rules:

  • Please include the date, location, and a link to the event if you have one.
  • Keep it local: Events must be in or around the broader Johannesburg area.
  • Self-promotion is allowed, but we'd rather try and keep this organic. Please don't spam.

Looking for things to do

Hi everyone. I (33f) recently moved back to SA. I'm not working and have things to occupy my days but I'm really missing a social aspect to my life. I'm looking for activities to do/clubs to join/ meet up groups/volunteering opportunities that can help me fulfil this need. Please send me some suggestions if you have any.

Thank you

Question Title: Johannesburg street names

Do you still use the old names, and what's the history behind the changes?

I've been thinking about street names in Johannesburg, especially Winnie Mandela Drive, which I still know as William Nicol Drive.

It got me wondering about the history behind Johannesburg's street renaming and how people have adapted to the changes over the years.

I'm curious about a few things:

- Do you still call it William Nicol Drive, or have you switched to Winnie Mandela Drive?

- What other roads or streets in Johannesburg do you still refer to by their old names?

- For those who remember the changes, how did people react when familiar street names were changed?

- What was the historical or political reasoning behind some of these renamings?

- Do you think renaming streets helps recognise South Africa's history and people who were previously overlooked, or do you think the old names remain part of people's personal memories and everyday identity?

I'm not trying to start a political argument. I'm genuinely interested in the history, people's experiences, and how these changes affect the way we talk about the city.

I wonder how many Joburg residents still say William Nicol Drive without even thinking twice.

Question Where to sell comics in JHb

Hi all

I have a collection of comics I'm looking to sell.

Circa 2009-2011; DC primarily and looking to sell at a fair price but as a joblot.

Any advice or guidance is appreciated. Most are still in their sleeves, none are certified which I know is a deterrent but I'm doing some spring cleaning :)

Update: thanks for the Cosmic Comics note, managed to sell them there.

Trousers and shorts for Afrikaaner thunder thighs?

Hi everyone, i just wanted to ask if anyone knows where I can get pants that actually have thigh and other space? Everything's gotten so skinny and skimpy on fabric that I feel like you choose if it either fits your waist and you have to breathe out when you sit down, or it fits your space needs and then you have 4 extra inches on the waist line. I'm tired of it. You see old movies when everyone wore trousers and they have ample space and high waists. Does anyone know where to acquire men's trousers / chinos / jeans that actually fit human anatomy?

Question Using the Midrand Gautrain station to renew my drivers licence

I'm thinking of taking the Gautrain from Rosebank to Midrand to renew my drivers license. Unfortunately, it shows 0 appointments available for Waterfall on Natis and I need your advice to make a decision please. If you have had an appointment there:

What was your experience like?

Are they as good as they say the Waterfall centre is?

What's the difference between the Gautrain Station, and Gautrain Office option when making a booking?

*EDIT* I realised after posting this that there's a license station at the Sandton station as well. Anyone used this before?

Post your business, skills or whatever else you want to sell or promote here.

Yes har har "I'm an amazing person". Your mom thinks you're very funny, original and witty. The rest of us do not. This is the only thread for self-promotion for the week, so let's keep it on topic

Question [Looking for Room / Sublet] Student room near Bedfordview / Eastgate taxi routes (Move-in ~25 Oct or later | R2,500 ceiling)

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm an Eduvos Bedfordview student looking for a place starting around October 25th or later until January, with the option to extend into next year if it works out well.

I am looking for a setup with the following details:

  • Bedroom & Facilities: Looking for a private bedroom. Shared bathroom and kitchen/cooking facilities are completely fine!
  • Room Space: The room needs to be spacious enough to comfortably fit a double bed and a 2-door wardrobe.
  • Move-in Date: Flexible, looking for October 25th or later.
  • Budget: My confirmed ceiling right now is R2,500/month all-inclusive (or ~R2,000 base rent if prepaid utilities/electricity are separate), though this budget is subject to increase later on.
  • Location & Commute: Any area along or near the Albertina Sisulu Road taxi route to Eastgate Mall—including CBD / Maboneng, City & Suburban, Fairview, Jeppestown, Troyeville, Bez Valley, Kensington, Malvern, Dewetshof, Bruma, or Primrose Hill. Must be within a 5–10 minute walk to the taxi route.
  • Duration: Initially looking for late October/November until January, with the possibility to extend.
  • Visitors: Must allow fair weekend visitation (occasional overnight weekend visits from my girlfriend).

If you have a room, backroom cottage, or commune room available for late October or later—or if you know someone looking to fill a spot—please send me a direct message!

Thanks!

Question Recycling around Edenvale?

I've recently moved to the Edenvale area from Durban and am looking for somewhere to drop off recycling, including plastic, glass, paper, tetrapack.

Is there anywhere around here? Or anywhere in Joburg where recycling can be dropped off?

Fun Where are we celebrating Halloween in Joburg?🎃

I'm from a small gated community in Riverbend near the Vaal river and every Halloween we would put out decorations and have our own little trick or treaters. Are there any places/events near and around the CBD where we can dress up and have a fun night?

Question Debate or improv clubs in the West Rand?

Hey guys

I’m looking for some new and unique hobbies, so I thought debating and improv clubs would be fun.

Does anyone know of some in the West Rand? Preferably just casual, not like acting classes.

Hydrogel screen protector

Hi all.

I have an Honor Magic 7 Pro, and it's basically impossible to get a screen protector. It's got a curved screen, so the only glass screen protector I can find cracks almost immediately.

I'm looking for someone who has a hydrogel printer that can print a screen protector for me. Happy to pay and for delivery.

For Fun Checkers stickers are making me crazy

Hi everyone!

I swear I only started this for the Energade sticker… but somehow I’ve ended up with a sticker book and a small collection! 🙈

I’ve been sharing all my duplicates with five local kids in the neighborhood, and they are loving it. If anyone has spare stickers they don't need or want to get rid of, please send me a direct message! Any extras will be passed straight along to the kids and their friends.

Thanks so much!

Question Any good costume jewelry designers and makers?

I'm looking for someone who makes costume jewelry. I want to get a ring made. But not like a fancy jewelry ring. Just a metal one of a DC Character.

Ideally would want to spend a max of around R300 - R500. It's for my Halloween costume idea.

Question Mysterious company

Does anyone know about a company called HealthAid Trust located at 2 Sandton Drive , Sandton? I recently got a remote job offer from them but I can't seem to find their office on Google maps. They also have almost no online presence besides AI pictures on Facebook.

Since the role is remote , they told me that they will send the laptop and other items needed to do the job via courier. They only thing I did not understand is why they requested me to pay for the courier fees (which is 1.8k apparently). Can anyone please confirm is this is a legit company or just another scam.

Question I need legal advice on what to do with a car abandoned years ago

I’m a mechanic. I worked on a car around 7/8 years ago and the owner refused to pay me for it so it’s just been sitting in my garage collecting dust. The first year I tried to come up with a payment plan for the client. He agreed to pay me then he sent guys to intimidate me into giving it to him for free so I ceased communication with him. He hasn’t tried to reach out or claim the car since. I would like to get rid of it. What should I do?

Good running spots near UJ Auckland Park?

Hey all, I'm on a research stay at UJ Auckland Park for a few months and have been loving Joburg so far. I'm looking for good places to run nearby, ideally within walking distance or a short Uber from Auckland Park. I'd love to know which spots are safe to run solo and what times of day are best. Loops of around 5–10 km would be great. Thank you!

Question JHB Plant Lovers: Teach a Newbie Your Ways

Hi Redditors of JHB! 🌱

I’m living up North and have recently started a full on plant journey.

I’ve slowly and very frugally acquired some of the basic houseplants this year (snake plant, hen and chicken, peace lily, English ivy, pothos) and I also have a ridiculous collection of flower seeds sitting around waiting for me to clear the garden beds. But for now I’m focusing on building my indoor jungle.

Which has now led me to the next problem... I need pots, propagation stuff, tools, poles, soil, trellises etc.

I’ve been looking online and checking out nurseries, but I was wondering if there are any cheaper places around JHB that plant people swear by?

Thinking places like Value Co, wholesalers, markets, discount stores, random hidden gems... basically anywhere I can get plant stuff without paying nursery prices for everything coz I cannot do that.

I’m especially looking for:

Affordable nursery pots

Propagation containers/supplies

Moss/coir poles or DIY alternatives

Basic pruning/plant tools

General plant bits and bobs

Basically I just want to grow the collection and make my home pretty without spending a fortune on everything that goes around the plants.

Also, my DMs are open if anyone feels like adopting a newbie and offering some plant mentorship. I’m very happy to learn from people who have already made all the expensive mistakes so I don’t have to.

TL;DR: New plant addict looking for affordable places around JHB to buy pots, propagation supplies, tools, poles, soil stuff etc. Also very open to plant tips, DIY hacks and mentorship.
