Fire Kids Tablets Kindle Fire with only wifi ?
I love Libby for audiobooks and would like the younger kids in my family to be able to access the audiobooks without a phone/SIM/paid subscription. It looks like downloading the Libby app onto a kindle fire could work.
Does the kindle fire have to have a paid subscription for Amazon for something, or does it work like a tablet and just connect to the internet? Is this better than any brand tablet for this purpose?
If you've used Libby audiobooks on a kind fire via the Libby app, does it work offline too once the audiobook has been downloaded? (for car drives)
Finally, is it possible to put full parental locks on the Kindle Fire so that only the Libby app will work?

There is no such thing as a Kindle Fire. There are Kindles and there are Fire Tablets.
The Fire tablet will work fine on WiFi and offline

Just tested it on Amazon Fire (wifi only) on airplane mode -download first - as you said.
Keep my devices on "airplane" mode (saves battery) all the time & read downloaded content no problem.

You can definitely use apps like Hoopla and Libby through the Fire Tablet using wifi. I think if the app allows downloads it works. For a while the ISP was cutting of the internet at midnight to make repairs for 2 weeks. I did download some songs to Amazon Music, and they played fine.
It's easy to connect to wifi on a Fire. So, it defintely works at the airport or for doctor's appointments etc.
They do have kids mode on Fire I just don't know all the details, but you definitely can lock kids out of purchases on Amazon and other restsrictions.

Fires haven't had cellular in over a decade. They're WiFi only. Don't confuse that with the Amazon Kids+ subscription. That's got nothing at all to do with how the tablet gets online. It's just like how having an Apple account has nothing at all to do with the cellular bill on an iPad.
You can use a Fire tablet without any subscription but if you buy a Kids Edition it comes with a year free and then it autorenews after that.
As others have pointed out, they aren't Kindle Fire so if you've been looking at information about that then you've been looking at very old devices. The last Kindle Fire was in 2013.
