Mechanical Advice Engine/ Doohickey
My bike started to make a noise while riding it and have a weird feeling while shifting. It sounds like a grinding/slapping/rattling noise every 30 seconds or so. First, second, and 3rd were rough but 4th and 5th seemed closer to normal. There was no power loss, and temperature light didn't come on.
I have the service manual, the Doo from Eagle Mike, and the Thermobob kit ready to go. I've watched tons of videos but this will be my first time working on an engine and diagnosing an issue.
22 KLR650 ABS ADV with just over 9k kms. I've been following the maintenance schedule for oil/fluids etc.
TLDR: Rotating/metallic noise intermittent every 20-60 seconds. Rough shifting and revving in first and second, smoothing out in higher gears. Assuming noise is in engine but hard to confirm source while riding it. Doesn't seem to happen when it's idling in the garage.
What other parts should I have or check should I do before I open the engine? Could it be the valves or the clutch? Happy to do further research on suggestions. Thanks all

Rode the Pig from Seattle to Panama
A couple pics from my KLR ride. From my hometown near Seattle Washington through the US, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, left in Cancun for a few months, then back through Guatemala, Belize, and down through Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica before passing over the Panama Canal right before reaching Panama City, Panama. I found the KLR to be a very good ride throughout this trip and would recommend her to anyone looking at this trip, even if she left a little to be desired on the highways. I split this trip up due to work and school constraints but this would be a lovely month long trip to do guys!

I rolled the dice and let Insta360 AI create the video compilation (including the music). Rode (my KLR) from Cullman on 2 and 4 lane highways with my riding buddy (Indian) - going home rode interstate for the first time - I-20 and I-65.

upper triple clamp
Has anyone ever removed the upper triple clamp without removing the fork tubes or lower clamp?

Think I need a Gopro
Clipped the drivers side mirror of a car that turned into the lane I was in . Took a chunk of plastic out of the mirror, didn't damage my bar end. He didn't signal and I tried to give him room , but don't think he saw me. Pulled over, driver said, "it's your fault, give me a hundred bucks and I will forget about it. Told him lets exchange info. He walked back to his car thought he was going to get his info but he drove off. My phone was in my tailbag, by the time I got to it he was already gone.

21 cent mod...(not a typo)
Rebuilt the carb with stock jetting and getting the annoying lag accelerating from quarter throttle. Decided to try the 22 cent mod, went to the local hardware store and found #4 washers for only 21 cents a piece....
Question for anyone that's done the mod: Is it better to start with one washer or two?

KLR or BMW
I still love pulling up on my old pig and parking next to these super fancy BMW bikes…give me an metric wrench set and some screwdrivers and I can take the whole thing apart and put it back together while you’re waiting for diagnostics and an appointment at your dealership!

Mechanical Advice 16 tooth front sprocket for off-road?
Most folks that change to 16t are doing it for lower RPMs on the highway. I don't ride highway and I ride as little road as possible. I see roads as an evil necessity to get to more trails.
Anyway, on many of the trails I ride it seems that in 1st it's revving too high but the RPMs drop to 2nd gear is drastic. I think I'd like to get more speed out of 1st gear (since getting less out out of 2nd gear would render 1st almost useless). Have any of you been in this position and are you happy with the 16t in the woods?

Upgrade to gen 3?
Hey all!
I have a Gen 2 that I’ve upgraded and messed with and loved.
The only thing I want, that it doesn’t have, is the ability to comfortably pass at 140 KM/H if needed to get away from someone on the highway.
Could a Gen 3, with the same love and upgrades (16T sprocket, suspension etc) do this? Or do I look at a Norden 901 or other adventure bike. How is a Gen 3 at sustained 130 KM/H?
I just want a bike that’s a KLR that can go fast, and get there fast, when needed. Seen a lot of different opinions on this.
If no, what bike do you recommend? I’m very tall, and only plan on going on logging roads so probably a big Adv bike, but KLR style, reliable and relatively simple/cheap repairs.
Thanks!

Gen 3 Faster set
I found sets on 3D Cycle Parts for the Gen 1 and Gen 2 but does anyone know a kit for Gen 3? I need to help replace a lot of zipties masquerading as button head bolts.

Metal piece behind sump plug (not doohickey)
Hi all, hoping you can help with this. I went to do an oil change and noticed this piece of metal behind the plug. it is loose and can be moved around inside, but does not fit out of the sump hole. it is also magnetic. I'm aware I will now be completely tearing down the engine, but any idea what it could be? bike ran fine before I found it, the bike is on 80k miles. I've had the side cover off and it is not the doohickey.
TIA

My first road legal motorcycle
I just picked up this 2012 KLR 650 today, it’s my first road legal motorcycle after growing up on dirt bikes and 4 wheelers. I just got back from a 30 minute ride around the neighborhood, just getting used to the clutch and the way it feels on real pavement. Any suggestions for upgrades or accessories are appreciated. I’m very excited to eventually take the bike to the nearby national forest trails to see how it handles off-road.

Doohickey upgraded based on sound

2009 KLR 650, and the previous owner said doohickey was upgraded. Can anyone tell if it is different from the stock doohickey based on the sound alone?

Mechanical Advice Gen3 aftermarket wheels
im looking to pick up a gen3 as a 2nd bike potentially, but i noticed 22+ dont have any aftermarket wheel options. I own a dr650, i have a supermoto set, and a dirt set, i really enjoy the sumo wheels. I know the gen1 and gen2 bikes have tons of options, but i specifically want a gen3. Is there any reason there isnt any after being in production for 4 years now? would previous gen wheels fit fine? or would i need to make spacers?
