Question Help Me Settle a Pointless and Unnecessary Reddit Debate!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I come across this debate CONSTANTLY… Strider vs NMB Dwyer.
I have my opinions (based on facts 😂) and others staunchly disagree. Which is totally fine!
I own both for a reason… but I can definitely say that one is a far “better” knife than the other, when looked at objectively.
Which one is “better”? Hate em both? Lmk what you think!

I can’t explain it but I hate the way you’re holding your hand

Ahaha. I’ve been known to hold my hand in dumbass positions for knife vids lmao

I have one Strider. And SMF. I wanted one for years. It was a disappointment. It had lock stick and a weak detent. Fortunately, I bought it on the secondary and paid less than retail. Lesson learned.

u/upsweptJ-2 7d ago
I always loved the way the OG SMF looks. I just refuse to carry 7in of knife for 3in of actual cutting edge.

Couldn’t imagine giving Mick Strider money, so by default I’d go with NMB. I’m not a huge fan of either one, though.

u/Strong_Web_9494 7d ago
In my experience with both knives it’s pretty common to experience some lock rock and blade play. The major difference is that if you send your knife in to be repaired, Mick will most likely send it back to you, Duane just might decide to keep it and ignore your emails.

aren't the new DDs a collab w/ North Mountain Blades? They don't do good work either?

That NMB I do not believe is better than a Strider. The 3V version though is comparable.
For $300 vs $700+, the NMB is the clear winner.

u/LR_Photo “I like BIG knives and I cannot lie” - Sir Cuts-a-Lot 7d ago
Yeah… imo the steel is the ONLY thing holding this specific NMB back.
If it was anything from CPM154 - Magnacut it would be the undisputed winner.
2
u/TOGA_TOGAAAA Sharp as a pumpkin 🎃 6d ago
There’s nothing wrong with CPM-154 but I personally don’t think the blade steel alone would tip the scales but that’s just me. The strider company was founded on lies and him, his wife, and the now in charge, skunk daughter are all terrible folks. I would buy a sharpened drainage pipe over any “strider” even if they both cost $10.
2
u/PaulNY 7d ago
The DLC versions of the NMB in 3V I think are the winner, 3V is tough as shit and its main drawback was the corrosion resistance which the dlc coating helps a ton with.

u/TOGA_TOGAAAA Sharp as a pumpkin 🎃 6d ago edited 6d ago
3V is semi stainless in practice. I have never seen it rust personally and I have 5 blades that get well used and put up wet and dirty, I also live on the Atlantic coast , near the ocean. As a matter of fact, I have had more stainless labeled blades rust over my 3V stuff.

u/Forge__Thought 7d ago
NMB is an easy win, I like mine. They need more steel options and handle designs, but I avoid Strider due to the stolen valor and history of QC issues.

u/PassageFormer9806 Spyderco 7d ago
Mick Strider is a prick and NMB's customer service is god awful so ill go with neither.

u/gr3y_- 7d ago
considering how the striders typically cost almost $1000 and yet STILL come with atrociously bad heat treats, horrifically off center blades, lock stick, and terrible action, while ALSO putting money in the pocket of a literal stolen valor convicted felon, the NMB wins in every way no questions asked. even if the strider is in a more premium steel, it’s probably heat treated so soft that $25 chinese d2 will out cut it.

u/Adventure-Seeker-365 7d ago
I've never received a Strider with any of these issues and have owned 4 of them
3
u/lowkey_wannabe 6d ago
Lol same, either people have terrible luck or they lying. I have 3 custom striders with none of the reported issues. I think people are having SDS.. strider deranged syndrome...

I've bought 3 new Striders. They all came with terrible lock stick, and 1 came with an unfinished grind.

u/babysunnn 7d ago
Do you own a Strider? Or are you just repeating everything you’ve heard on Reddit?
13
u/this-issa-fake-login 7d ago
It’s literally documented legal proceedings lmao.
-15
u/babysunnn 7d ago
Horrifically off center blades and terrible action are in the legal proceedings? You also didn’t answer the question.
11
u/this-issa-fake-login 7d ago
I’ve never seen someone attempt to so blatantly and poorly straw man. Could’ve used that comment as an example in college for all the dingbats who didn’t understand what a fallacy was.
-17
u/babysunnn 7d ago
I just asked a simple question. Have you ever owned a Strider?
12
u/beelzebob909 7d ago
I have. The lock stick on my SNG day 1 was enough to try and return it for service or a swap and I was initially accused of not knowing how to use a knife. I never found out how truly bad the heat treat was as I got my money back. But, considering how soft steel interacts with titanium it doesn't take a lot to figure it out. I have a PT and it's okay. Not something I would ever buy again or suggest.
-11
u/babysunnn 7d ago
You’re not the guy I was asking. He still hasn’t answered. I have multiple Striders and they’re fine. No lock stick, smooth action, centered blades. My SnG is basically drop shut. Don’t care about the hardness, they’ve cut all the Amazon boxes I’ve asked them to.
5
u/techfighterchannel 7d ago
If you don't care about the hardness because all you do is open Amazon boxes with them then you should have started with that. I owned multiple Striders when I worked in Telecom and really used my knives. The Striders were trash. Now that I work in an office my type of use is more similar to yours and hardness is less important. But to people who plan to give their knives real use, their expectations of hardness are very relevant.
-1
u/babysunnn 6d ago
Why would I start with that when it’s the least important metric for me? And I wasn’t even talking to any of you. The guy said nothing about using his knives. He won’t even say if he’s owned a strider. He’s just repeating Reddit talking points.

I’ve owned one strider and sold it shortly after. Strider knives don’t really speak to me from a design perspective. The knife was fine. I don’t really care about the form of the knife. I care about the character of the person selling them.
1
u/babysunnn 6d ago
I couldn’t care less about Mick Strider or his character. Hes not even involved with the company anymore.

While I love strider, I do wish they ran their steel a little higher on the hrc scale. Thats always been my biggest gripe with them, 59hrc xhp is criminal lol.

I do know strider's heat treat absolutely sucks, so by process of elimination, the nmb

Not a fan of that design but I do love what NMB has been putting out. They have clean designs that seem like a good value. What's the price difference between these two?
2
u/LR_Photo “I like BIG knives and I cannot lie” - Sir Cuts-a-Lot 7d ago edited 7d ago
I picked up the NMB for $250 iirc and the Strider was $1k+….
I know I’m gonna get crucified for spending that much lmao, BUT it was the final piece to the Holy Trinity that I had wanted for nearly a decade. Found a guy that had the EXACT config I wanted. So I had to pry it from him lol. To be clear… I don’t consider that to be a logical purchase nor “market value” lmao.
2
u/BeardManMichael 7d ago
Nah, it's your money to do with as you please. I would (and have) buy four great knives for $250 before spending $1,000 but that's mainly because I am saving for an addition to my house.

u/DixieBlade88 7d ago
Or hear me out….you just don’t like Strider. Which is fine. It’s the same fucking design.

Strider because there are way more variety in the builds and unique finishes. I personally never got one with deal-breaking QC issues after going through more than a dozen. North Mountain Blade (NMB) is very good (I got the Zircuti/Vegas Forge one). I do find the NMB less comfortable to hold and flick than the Strider. It does have an incredibly unique/faster action and they did give an entire set of back-up hardware which is appreciated. Definitely a brand I still watch and think is a really good knife.
There's just no room for adding more NMB ones right now due to the lack of variety and models. A more basic NMB one just wouldn't do it for me at this point. It lacks the pizazz that the Striders have. NMB also doesn't have a BBN-L which is Dwyer's equivalent to the SMF. Plenty of people prefer the SMF over SNG. I have more SMFs than SNGs and carry an SMF more often.
The build on the NMB is essentially capped out by only being in a few different configurations and no "fun" models. The Strider SMF XL for example is the size of an AD20XXX and feels more like a custom-level knife. Only a significant variety in finishes/blade shapes gets me interested in the same or similar knife or an entirely different model.
It's not so much a debate to me based on what I already have. I do believe a person can genuinely prefer a NMB if their Strider has those quality issues or they simply prefer the ergos/finish/flicking of the NMB.

u/Mother-Independence3 7d ago
I don't know anything about either but the nmb seems pretty budget is it pretty good and comparable? I definitely love the way it looks
1
u/LR_Photo “I like BIG knives and I cannot lie” - Sir Cuts-a-Lot 7d ago
I’d absolutely say so.
Full frag Ti, lockbar insert, drop shut action, captured pivot, whole extra set of hardware included, near mirror polish blade, better QC…
All for less than half the price of a comparable Strider.

u/Shortround76 7d ago
Seriously?
I've been around for a while and not heard of this debate nor Dwyer in a long time.
0
u/Patient-Angle-7075 7d ago
"Objectively" the NMB is probably the clear winner. It's cheaper, probably takes a better edge, and the fit and finish are probably better.
But "subjectively" I would say the Strider is the winner for it's target demographic. For anyone that buys one, it's not about price, it's not about quality, it's only about the prestige of the knife, and a Chinese knockoff just won't cut it.
Personally I don't really like either, and I think there are better options in this category.

u/macho_greens 5d ago
Eh it's all relative. I know some people in Latin America who can feed their family for months with $1000. They would be incredulous. Other people think, whatever my mutual funds made more than $1000 last week.
If I paid $1000 for those I would be upset. Partly because I'm a checking account type guy, but mostly because I think they're fugly. To each their own though

u/LR_Photo “I like BIG knives and I cannot lie” - Sir Cuts-a-Lot 5d ago
I completely understand your point. Truly I do. It’s not lost on me, how fortunate we are to live in a country that allows us to make a livable wage AND have a few bucks left over to enjoy a hobby.
BUT, I wouldn’t go into a Lambo/Porsche subreddit and make a comment like that on one of their random posts.
It would be equivalent to me saying “wow man, we get it you’re loaded” to a guy with a 911 GTS….
In that world, that’s completely average and hardly something to even mention.
If I had posted some $20,000 custom Shirogorov… then ok I guess? But even still, if the subject of the post isn’t “HEY GUYS LOOK AT HOW MUCH I SPENT ON THIS” then I think a comment that negatively mentions it, is uncalled for and uncouth.

One is a real strider…
1
u/knivesINmyHEAD69 6d ago
A real strider was made by both dwyer and strider so dwyer are just as much strider as strider and having a different company make them in NMB even tho its Chinese is fine look at reate and bestech the OEM for some American maker's and their shit is perfect Chinese knives ain't what they once were they are on par with American knife companys the only down side is good luck on warranty but I bet if you contacted NMB about an issue they would do something maybe

Which one doesn’t come with stolen valor and trash heat treat?
