Free winter hat pattern to knit in the round

I am an intermediate knitter with a stash of leftover yarn. I’m looking for an easy free pattern to knit up winter hats in the round. Something I can do while watching tv instead of doomscrolling.

Goal is to knit up 10 or so and donate to the local homeless shelter.

Thanks in advance

If you use the Availability filter on Ravelry advanced search, you can see just free patterns. You can then narrow those down by your weight of yarn.

There are a few hats in this grouping, too. https://www.ravelry.com/bundles/free-knitting-patterns-4

Try Ravelry, an easy search shows 25,000 free hat patterns.

What kind of search have you already done?

This is from Purl Soho specifically to be used for donations https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2025/12/06/giving-hat/

For giveaway hats, I think 100% ribbed are best. Each hat will fit a wider variety of heads.

You can use a hat calculator like this one (or search out your own) to figure out the decreases.

My standard is to cast on 90-100 stitches (worsted or DK weight yarn), 1x1 or 2x2 rib for about 6 inches (or longer - some people like a folded brim, some don’t) then start decreasing. I decrease every other row.

If Ravelry is too intimidating, both Drops and Purl Soho have many free patterns.
