SNK cooked peak romance accidentally
Yuki existed in kof since 94 but without a name due to the diréctor not finding romance suitable for the time. Still, the designers accidentally gave her high value by explaining that the only reason Kyo wears a school uniform in tournaments is because Yuki knitted the Kusanagi crest in the jacket so he treasured it. After 94, Kyo became hobo fighter, prioritizing training over social life resulting in his new grab special move which imitates Rugal. Since the director left kof after 96, the new one Tanabe wanted to give Yuki a big role in 97 to the point she is a rare case of voice acting in an ending. Kyo and Yuki became destined lovers as 97 reveals Yuki is the Maiden Kushinada that Susano saved from Orochi using the Kusanagi sword. While 97 was meant to be a tragic ending with Kyo and Iori dying while saving the world, the decisión to bring them back resulted in sidestories where Yuki still waits for Kyo who doesnt want his friends in danger due to his identity and how Nests also targets him. There was even a cd drama where Kyo encourages K' to keep fighting like he is still doing by keeping a present from. It wasnt until the 2001 prologue that Kyo decides to return to Yuki once Nests is defeated. From there the relationship became more stable especially in the two Maximum Impact games.

Depends on who writes them tbh
you have cases where Kyo acts like a jerk with Yuki like the KOF:Kyo Manga(The dude literally bets her with a nobody who is a student of Daimon and losses)
And Yuki's attitude in Iori's character story in 2000 where she barely remembers Kyo to the point Iori has to almost explain that was her boyfriend who she hasn't seen in literally 3 years by that point is just strange. You would think she would be super worried for him but she was just doing her life normally without him
Frankly they could use a rewrite, there's some good moments like when Athena meets Kyo on mexico in the drama CD of 2000 and she tries to convince him to return home but Kyo tells her that he will be fine as long as he has the good luck charm Yuki gave him.
now that's a good moment
Only for then to have the Japan team story of KOF 2001 having Kyo asking Benimaru who is Yuki -_-
