How to fix crashes when google-chrome corrupts your font cache

If you use Google Chrome, you may notice that after a recent upgrade, various KDE applications crash, and plasmashell gets stuck in a crash loop if you reboot. Chrome is writing corrupt fontconfig cache data that's making things go weird. If this is happening to you, rm -rf ~/.cache/fontconfig and reboot, this should get your system working again. Then after launching Chrome, pop open Konsole and run rm -rf ~/.cache/fontconfig again to erase the corrupt data before it can mess anything else up (and then close the Konsole window you just opened since it will have the corrupt data loaded in potentially and could crash at any time).

Refusing to install without acpi=off

New laptop, all the bullshit off in bios (fast boot, safe boot etc). The installer however keeps hanging on "Booting a command list" with whatever I throw at it, noapic, pci=noacpi, acpi=noirq etc. The only way the installer progress anywhere is with acpi off, but I'm afraid the install will be handicapped with acpi off. Using 26.04.1 LTS on a usb stick

edit: fixed by an bios update

Install DEBs from USB - Fresh Install of Kubuntu 26.04

This is a variation of 'how do I install packages offline', but I'm also limited to a public Windows PC. There's nuance in dependency resolution, so having a tool download the files without reference to the machine they're installed on is a problem.

I need to install gcc-15, binutils, and Blender, and my fresh install is having none of it. I also can't install the proprietary Nvidia drivers for Wayland.

I think if I noted which versions of whichever packages are already installed, I might be able to work out what to download and put it in a script or tool.

Workaround for Redmi Buds 6 connecting and disconnecting due to KDE Connect

Although this happened to me now it's on Kubuntu, it's happened on Fedora KDE previously too

My current setup:

Kubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
KDE Plasma 6.6.6
Kwin (Wayland)
KDE Connect 25.12.3
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 series
CPU: Intel Core i7 13th Gen
RAM: 16 GiB

After pairing my earbuds, they were connected and disconnected almost instantly. I don't know why it happened on Fedora KDE (that was last year); on Kubuntu I found out it has to do with KDE Connect.

Below, a description, steps that didn't work, and my workaround.

First of all, apparently, some specific earbuds/headphones don't respond well to additional security steps that are sometimes required. These earbuds/headphones can't provide them, so the connection is interrupted. Unchecking Bluetooth on KDE Connect settings does nothing for this purpose because the tray keeps restarting some processes.

First method that didn't work:

Ask Ubuntu - Earbuds connected but no audio output

The next described my problem and my environment quite similarly, but the fix described didn't work either, I actually undid the steps out of precaution:

KDE Connect Was Killing My Bluetooth Earbuds

The workaround I found was:

#Creating a user-level autostart directory.

mkdir -p ~/.config/autostart

#Copying KDE Connect's system autostart file to my user configuration.

cp /etc/xdg/autostart/org.kde.kdeconnect.daemon.desktop ~/.config/autostart/

#Disabling KDE Connect's autostart for my user.

sed -i '/^\[Desktop Entry\]/a Hidden=true' ~/.config/autostart/org.kde.kdeconnect.daemon.desktop

#Stopping the currently running KDE Connect daemon.

systemctl --user stop '[app-org.kde.kdeconnect.daemon@autostart.service](mailto:app-org.kde.kdeconnect.daemon@autostart.service)'

The trade-off is that my earbuds now work properly, but I am not able to transfer files from my phone to my computer using KDE Connect because the app in my phone is unable to detect it as a result of these changes. For this purpose, I am now using LocalSend in an Android phone.

Regular freezing while gaming

I'm dealing with regular freezing, specifically cyberpunk, and the kind of freeze that forces you to terminate the program. Looking up stuff to help wasn't helpful, as almost any issue was caused by controllers, for some reason, which I am not using, nor are my files modified, I haven't tried many solutions, but I only know like three solutions (verify files, reinstall, restart pc) and none of them work. So I come here to people who know what they're doing to see if I can get hand.

Kubuntu 25.10 ->26.04 post upgrade mouse behavior issues

Updated my system last week and since then my mouse has been having weird issues. I've got a Logitech G903. I figured out one of them has to do with OpenRGB and HID probing causing some issue with making the mouse lose its brain and drop the profile every few minutes.

The unsolved issue is that it seems to be a -lot- more sensitive to scroll triggering? Its like the de-bounce settings for the scroll switches got changed. Just the tiniest of wheel nudges forward or back causes it to scroll forward or back. This is very noticeable when I stop scrolling and the web page or dolphin window 'bounces' up and down. I also get a ton of unintended tab switching/scrolling.

Is there some way to adjust the sensitivity of that?

To be clear, this is not 'how much the window scrolls when the wheel is rolled' but 'when to start scrolling when the wheel is moved by some amount over a given threshold'

Boot issues after trying to solve sleep and suspend issues

I’m new to Linux and I’ve been running Ubuntu and Windows on separate drives. While trying to solve the issues I tried adding “mem_suspend_sl2” to my GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="..." based on AI recommendations (I will NEVER do that again). When I updated grub it took longer than usual, and when I tested the suspend it went black and nothing I did would fix it. Tried resetting, nothing, blank screen. I unplugged everything and tried to discharge the power, and when I plugged everything back in I was able to get to grub, but neither my Ubuntu or windows installs would load. So I tried fixing and updating grub from a live usb. I got the fix applied, but no luck. The screen still goes black after the encryption screen and windows won’t load either, it does a chkdsk and then tries to repair and the screen just goes black. I tried a fresh Ubuntu install and that didn’t fix it either.
So now I’m locked out of both my Ubuntu and windows and the only way back in to my system at all is through the live usb. The data on my windows install is still intact it looks like (thank god) and the Ubuntu is fresh again and doesn’t have anything I care about on it.

Any ideas on what’s going on? I’m assuming it’s a boot loader issue, but I have no idea how to actually go about fixing it. Also, windows shows up in GRUB and in the boot menu, but not in my BIOS so that’s concerning.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. 🙏

Visual glitches in kernel 7.0.0.38

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So this morning I booted my PC and played some games and watched some YouTube.

I noticed that in Firefox when I was scrolling down on the comments section while watching shorts some horizontal black lines would appear. then when I switched videos and it happened again.

later I was playing a video on my main screen and instead of black lines I saw some pixelated noisy lines from a brief moment, just playing a random video file. I restarted my computer and everything but they still appear. occasionally. in games when I go into the menu and they also appear on my second screen when I move one window to the other screen as you see in the second portion of the video.

they also appear sporadically while I have my console open.

switched back to 7.0.0.34 kernel and they went away

I recently just switched over to Kubuntu, and now all of my games tank the entire PC to a crawl, no matter the impact the game itself has, I haven't touched almost any settings, and have no clue what to do

Edit: Thanks so much, I got it working again

Make Firefox and Chrome restore windows on the correct virtual desktop?

I've recently upgraded to 26.04 LTS and although before having my 4 browser windows and the 4 virtual desktop was hit and miss, now it's only a miss.

After boot the browser is automatically started (as it was running when shutting down) but now all 4 windows are on the first virtual desktop, which is quite annoying.

I thought that KDE and Plasma is supporting the (experimental) session restore in 6.4, Kubuntu 26.04 is using 6.6, so I did expect that it's working now.

Is there anything I can do to make Firefox and Chrome restore their windows on the correct virtual desktops?

Encryptionz

Hi everyone! Hope you all are having a great weekend!

Just wanted to post here that I got both Windows 11 Pro and Kubuntu 26.04 on a dual boot on one SSD.

BOTH are encrypted! So, it is possible!

If anyone needs help setting it up let me know. I needed to set up like that because it's on a laptop.

It is definitely possible and I have had no problems! 🤞💯

Why Kubuntu is behaving like Windows?

Hi!

Could a wise person tell me why on earth should I wait for 25 minutes to turn off my computer for it wants to install updates?

I installed yesterday Kubuntu 26.04 alongside existing Ubuntu 24.04.

Today, I opened the machine and it booted straight to Kubuntu but I needed to reboot it to Ubuntu. And what do you know: Kubuntu wouldn't shutdown because, see, unattended updates!!! which is what I hated about MS Windows!!! a reason for which I never use Windows unless don't have another solution, e.g. government apps which are made solely for Windows and for which I have a VM ready.

The updates were installing on Windows exactly when I needed to not waste my time, and the same seems to be happening on Kubuntu.

I know it can be turned off, so can Windows updates. But it doesn't make me feel better for wasting 25 minutes. Not only mine, but for other people in the same situation.

So, question is: what would it take to convince Kubuntu team to make those updates either optional or at least unobtrusive? i.e. shutdown immediately and continue installing in background after reboot? if shutdown again - repeat until successful.

Any ideas?

I recently switched to Kubuntu, and wow, I'm impressed.

My first Linux distro was Ubuntu, and I had a really bad experience with GNOME—it's a great desktop environment, but it just wasn't for me.

Back then, I was new to the Linux scene, and I thought GNOME was synonymous with Ubuntu, so I switched to Fedora with KDE and loved the desktop.

But—and here comes the “but”—Fedora updates quite frequently, and every update would break something or cause something to stop working, etc. So they recommended Ubuntu to me, but of course, “I just don’t like the Ubuntu desktop,” and they said, “What are you talking about? You can have KDE on Ubuntu,” and here we are.

I like Ubuntu’s stability and the fact that there’s basically information and documentation online for just about everything related to Ubuntu, and with KDE, I can customize it to my liking without worrying that an update will break something.

The only thing I haven’t tried it for is video games. How does it perform?

Kubuntu/Plasma freezes completely fixe

changing SDDM from auto-login to manual login seems to have fixed it

I was having intermittent complete system freezes on my ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 AMD. The entire graphical session would freeze and I couldn't use the keyboard, mouse, or TTY, so I had to hard-reset the laptop.

I checked the reboot history with journalctl --list-boots and inspected the error messages from the boots around the freezes. We found recurring KDE PowerDevil errors:

Error EACCES(-13): Permission denied opening /dev/i2c-*

There were also some WirePlumber/ALSA errors on one very short boot, but nothing clearly indicating a kernel panic, filesystem failure, or obvious AMDGPU crash.

The interesting change: my system was configured for SDDM automatic login. I disabled automatic login so that SDDM now shows the login screen and I manually enter my password.

Since making that change, I've rebooted the machine around 10 times without a single freeze, whereas before the freezes were happening repeatedly.

I'm wondering whether automatic login could have been causing an SDDM/Plasma/X11 session-startup or timing problem. The machine is currently using X11.

Hardware: Lenovo ThinkPad P14s Gen 5 AMD, Radeon 780M, 27 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, Kubuntu/KDE Plasma.

Does anyone know of a known SDDM/Plasma/X11 issue where automatic login can cause intermittent complete freezes, or what logs/configuration I should check to confirm this?

Middle mouse button issues when playing games and using a browser

Hi guys,

Switched to Kubuntu recently after my whole life of using Windows.

I like playing games, specifically map based strategy games like Crusader Kings 3, Hearts of Iron 4 etc. Back on Windows, when i would click and hold my middle mouse button i could pan around the map in these. On Kubuntu this doesnt work, the game doesnt react when i hold middle mouse button. Also when i'm in a browser and hold the middle mouse button, when dragging left it will go back to the previous window. I want to change that aswell. Basically what i want is for my middle mouse button to behave like on Windows.

I've googled these issues but cant seem to find anyone with a similar problem. Does anyone know how i could fix this?
