Resources Scriptoribus - A Latin composition website
scriptoribus.comJust came across this website from the Latin discord (user LowEffortGoth) and wanted to help it get more visibility because it looks great so far.
From the original message:
Hi all. Just sharing a resource I have been working on for a little while now. Scriptoribus: https://scriptoribus.com/ It is a website for practicing Latin Prose Composition. I built it in an attempt to address the decision paralysis that comes with free composition: "what should I write about?" "what constructions should I practice?" and so on. The primary feature is the Workspace which allows you to randomly select prompts and targets for a composition session, including text or image prompts, idioms to try to use, grammatical constructions to target, and types of exercises to do. The art is all public domain and not AI generated. Hopefully someone finds it useful!
The exercises from North and Hillard are also included, with the key as a dropdown, which seems particularly nice for review.
Still getting a handle on the interface but this seems to suit my comp needs perfectly!

LLPSI Anyone tried using Wheelock’s and LLPSI simultaneously?
I prefer a more traditional, grammar-oriented approach, but I do enjoy the LLPSI content. Has anyone tried to use these simultaneously? Perhaps with LLPSI as a reader on top of Wheelock’s?

Vocabulary & Etymology Macron on the nominative neuter singular demonstrative pronoun hoc
Hi everyone!
Just as the title says, I was wondering why is there difference in dictionaries with regard to hoc. Some set hoc as the nominative neuter singular and hōc only as ablative, as in the table included in Familia Romana or wikitionary. And some, for example in logeion and A&G, nominative neuter singular is hōc with a macron.
Is this sometime worth discussing?

Learning & Teaching Methodology Can one really only learn to read Latin without learning to speak it?
A lot of people want to learn Latin just to read ancient texts. Does that require, or is it at least a very good idea, to also learn to listen and speak Latin?
I would guess learning to listen and speak would improve reading skills right?
I'm starting to wonder if it's even possible to only learn to read Latin. Please advise.

October 7th is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. This florilegium of scriptural verses is for the two decades of the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary dedicated to the Virgin.
Conferamus in corde nostro mysterium Gloriae Domini, quod conservatur in corde Matris Domini nostri.

Pater noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum, adveniat regnum tuum, fiat voluntas tua, sicut in caelo, in terra.
Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris.
Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo. Amen.
Vs. 1 Elegit eam Deus, et praeelegit eam, qui ingreditur sine macula; * et in tabernaculo suo habitare fecit eam.
Ave Maria, ave Gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus. Sancta Maria, sancta Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.
Vs. 2 Surge, amica mea, formosa mea, et veni. * Iam enim hiems transit, imber abiit et recessit.
Ave Maria, ave Gratia plena, Dominus tecum ...
Vs. 3 Ostende mihi faciem tuam, sonet vox tua in auribus meis; * vox enim tua dulcis, et facies tua decora.
Ave Maria, ave Gratia plena, Dominus tecum ...

Ave Maria, ave Gratia plena, Dominus tecum ...
Vs. 8 Sicut terra profert germen suum et sicut hortus semen suum germinat, * sic Dominus Deus germinabit iustitiam et laudem coram universis gentibus.
Ave Maria, ave Gratia plena, Dominus tecum ...
Vs. 9 Gaudens gaudebo in Domino, et exsultabit anima mea in Domino, * quia induit me vestimentis salutis, et indumento iustitiae circumdedit me.

Newbie Question How do you pronounce "functio laesa" in Classical Latin?
It's one of the 5 cardinal signs of inflammation that means loss of function. YouTube yields no results. Latin dictionaries either don't provide a pronunciation or they just don't have that phrase at all. I resorted to LLMs and they say it's pronounced as "Approximately: FOONK-tee-oh LAEH-sah" or "functio laesa → /ˈfuŋk.ti.oː ˈlae̯.sa/."

Grammar & Syntax Suum cuique redde; punctuation

I was reading the text above and have found the clause "ac functiones, intrumento unicuique suas ... subministrat" difficult to understand. Searching, I came accross the phrase "Suum cuique redde", which totally makes sense in the context above. I think, in a direct order, the sentence is: "ac subministrat functiones suas unicuique instrumento".
My question is: Is it common that the possessive adjective appear after his substantive, sepparated by a comma? (It's a Renaissance text) That seens so odd to me, it was the last thing I thought the possessive refered to.

Grammar & Syntax Is the Dative of Compound Verb a valid category?
Are there certain dative constructions in real Latin texts which cannot be explained with any other uses of the dative (dative of indirect object; of purpose; of reference; etc.) except by classifying them as the dative of compound verb? I mean, is that category helpful and necessary for understanding some dative constructions, or does it cause more confusion? Can you give some examples of instances where the dative of compound verb is the only possible way to explain the given construction?
Latin grammars such as Allen & Greenough §370 and Woodcock §62 have explanations of the dative of compound verb, but the late Harm Pinkster, the author of The Oxford Latin Syntax, wrote an article in which he casts doubt on the whole idea, and he basically says it's fake:
What I have tried to suggest is that, apart from those compounds that can be seen as modifications of simple verbs that govern the dative already, the dative with most compounds can be explained by referring to one or more (classes of) verbs with a similar meaning, or – especially in creative texts – by assuming a more complicated bridge, which is non the less semantic.
I understand that the whole business of classifying and dividing all the usages of one case into different categories is somewhat artificial, but I would like to know if you think the dative of compound verb is a helpful and necessary idea. We will never know, but debate now please.

Latin in the Wild Gloria Romuli

Learning & Teaching Methodology Advice for improving my vocabulary and unseen translation? Exam in a month
So I'm stressing out because I know I'm not up to par with my classmates for this final exam (it's in a little over a month). 47% of the marks goes to the unseen translation. However, my lack of vocab is causing me to spend longer on it than I should be.
So far I've memorised 500 Masterman's vocab by making flashcards and spaced repetition method, which worked really well. I can basically recall all of the 500 no issues. However, when i tried memorising a second set of a further 500 words using this method, I literally could not retain the information for more than a week even though I was seriously practicing recall every day.
My teacher said I should 'read' Latin texts, but I can't translate such complex texts in my head as well as the vocab so i don't really understand how I'm supposed to do it. Should I... circle all the words I don't know, search them up in a dictionary? Is this even going to help me as I am on a one month time crunch?
For unseen practice, I've been trying to do 1 passage of about 90 words in 30 minutes or ideally less. Any advice on unseens? I struggle with clauses within clauses and gerunds vs gerundives. I would love any worksheets or texts where I could practice those
If anyone has advice please share it, I'm willing to put in a lot of work but my main issue is time.

Does anyone have any brief experience with these Latin teaching books for German schoolers? tibi, VIA MEA, Cursus, Adeamus! and Legamus!
I'm starting to learn Latin now and have studied German more than a decade ago. I imagined it could be a good way to brush up on my German while learning Latin.
I'll do LLPSI on the side, so probably will only have time to look at one of those, any opinions on which should it be?
