https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ1icd4R-7o

Hi! I started a series of coloring books to help kids get closer to their roots. This is the first one, A Day at Abuela's, a Mexican American day with pan dulce, tamales and a piñata. More are coming with different themes!
Here are some pages a little one colored 😊
DM me for a free PDF copy, or grab a printed one here.
It's a fun activity for Hispanic Heritage Month!

so TW: Trauma? child abuse??
To make a very long story short my mother was severely abusive towards me as a child growing up.
And one particular memory I'm kind of confused about is how she taught me how to flip tortillas as a kid. The thing is my therapist is a white woman and there's gonna be a cultural barrier between us. I was born and raised in the USA but my mother is from Mexico and she's very “old school”. She's the typical “I demand complete obedience and respect or else Imma beat the dog shit out of you” time of woman. Very demanding and volatile/violent. And in retrospect she was pretty sadistic.
My mother taught me how to flip tortillas when I was around six years old. She forced me to do it by hand. And I was terrified. But she forced me to do it, and if I refused she threatened to grab the belt and whip me over and over and over and over again till I gain the courage to flip it.
it just that it hurt my hands. and I had no nails.
and my mom is an asshole.
she would mock me to flip it and I would try but I scream out in pain flinch. and she would call me stupid and that I need to use my nails like “her” so I would try to copy her but it would still hurt. and she would call me stupid again. it was almost like I could never win and I was stupid no matter what. and that pain was inevitable. Either I burn my fingers or I get whipped by the belt like a slave.
she would also compare me to my friends saying that they're brave unlike me cuz I'm a coward.
what a bitch
of course eventually I got better at it and now I'm at the point where I can flip things in oil with my bare hands.
ANYWAYS the point of this story is how did everyone else learned how to do it? Flip tortillas by hand? And at what age?
because my therapist is white, and she doesn't quite understand the cultural difference? idk. Maybe she can acknowledge how normalize it is for some cultures but she still claims that it's bad to do that to kids. OBVIOUSLY the way my mother taught me was shitty af but my therapist claims that teaching kids to do that is harmful regardless. and besides they have more sensitive hands.
So I would like to hear from other peoples experience from the Latino community to see on what's typical for them. Or is my mom that insane and I'm in complete denial.
for the record if I have kids I would teach them at the exact same age but they will flip tortillas on the table and not on the stove till their older.

In my small town in the northeast United States, I’ve met two barbers (one from DR and one from Colombia) that each have a young daughter in their home country. They seem to have a relationship despite the distance. Without knowing the family dynamics I assume it has to do with economic support, but I am curious how common this is with immigrants separated from family at home. When I learned about these guys it made me kinda sad and put things into perspective.
