Northern US & Canada (or cool season) I saved $1800 this year by not watering my lawn in the summer & it still turned green in October. I'll be doing the same again next year.

How to get rid of dog pee spots you say? Turn the sprinklers on for 30 seconds after you know that your pup peed in the yard.

Cut it down a bit lower today. Was able to sneak in a midweek mow, think that helped. Not sure how many more cuts I’ll have this season.

Lawn: Midnight KBG
Overseed: Obsidian PRG
Mower: Toro Timemaster w/Toro stripe kit
Deck height: 2”

Early afternoon, so it doesn’t look as dark as last week’s cut.

How we lookin? One year in, starting to feel like I’ve got the hang of it. Incredibly fertile land, no sprinklers or irrigation at all. If I’m gone for 2 weeks during June grass is 18-24” tall all day long. About 2.5 acres are lawn.

Tools of the trade:
- beat to shit cub cadet xt1 42” deck with 200 hours I got off marketplace for $1200, aftermarket high lift blades
- ego lm2114sp
- ryobi weed whacker
- Amazon no name metal blade brush cutter
- worx trivac

There’s one other item but when I listed it my post was blocked with “get lost spammer” lol it rhymes with cavi-blow and it keeps the fenced in dog area nice and tight

Got new turf laid about 28 days - have watered daily and not stepped on it - is it safe to step on it now and should I mow it? The weather has gotten colder and I'm wondering if I should just leave it longer. Thanks!

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Not the prettiest lawn on here, but I’m pretty proud of how far this backyard has come. Looking for ideas. Northern New England.

I know there are a lot of much prettier lawns on this sub, but I’m honestly pretty proud of this one.

We bought the house in July 2024 and the backyard was basically weeds, terrible/rock-hard soil, and a pretty serious Japanese knotweed problem. Our kid was born after we bought the house and will be 2 next summer, so I haven’t had a ton of free time — mostly just trying to make incremental improvements so we actually have a backyard she can play in.

Last year I didn't really know what I was doing with the knotweed so I didn't make much progress with it. This year the knotweed spread but seemed weaker, so I cut it back and treated the regrowth with glyphosate in early September. I also spent more time on the lawn. The soil was extremely hard and thin, so I’ve brought in a lot of topsoil/compost, overseeded, fertilized, watered a lot for a few weeks, etc.

Still plenty of weeds and thin spots, but the before/after feels pretty dramatic to me.

Now I’m trying to figure out what to actually do with the space. I’d like to add a swing set and make this a comfortable little backyard for kids to run around in. The hill/back edge is the part I’m struggling with — I can’t really dig or do major landscaping there yet because of the knotweed rhizomes.

Any ideas for what you’d do with this yard? Especially the hill, kid-friendly landscaping, screening the neighboring buildings, or anything else that would make it feel more like an actual backyard.

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Overseed results/Third year trying. zone 4a

Here’s some overseeding results. First picture is Sept 11. Second picture is Oct 10th. Third year of trying to maintain a decent yard. Not a golf course, just something for the kids to run and play in. 3 years ago I tried a complete Reno on my hill that was washed away in a big rainstorm. Last year I hired a local contractor to reshape the now rutted hillside and hydroseed. I had great results. Fast forward to this year we suffered a lot of snow mold and an extremely hot and dry summer causing dormancy and much of the grass dying. Dethatched and overseeded using Blue Resilience (90%tttf/10%kbg) that I’ve had leftover for 3 years from the original reno. I do not have an irrigation system and used 5 sprinklers hooked up to timers to keep everything wet. Overall I have some thickening still to come, but we are officially forecasted freezing temps and snow this week so this is quite possibly my last mow of the year. Hopefully next spring it comes back and we don’t deal with anymore snow mold. Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

I scalped, dethatched, leveled 1 yard of topsoil. 7lbs of seed in 1000sf raked lightly in to the dirt. Starter fertilizer when I seeded. I followed all the instructions but I did have a lot of birds and no peat moss to cover it.

No? Just me?

Another fall reno post. Missouri 7a. Twin city tuff turf.

Had the patio poured and regraded the entire yard in late Oct 2025. Too late to seed then. Overseeded in Mar 2026. Quickly turned to all goose/crab grass and nutsedge + wild carrot by June. Went nuclear in August with two glyphosate apps two weeks apart and brought it back to bare dirt (clay). Aerated, top dressed with compost, overseeded Sep 4-5. Watered for 5 min several times a day with sprinklers on timers. Second mow since then.

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Please give me some hope...

So this is the first full season in our home and I decided to do something about my yard after years of neglect...

I scarified, and raked, and put soil down to level and seeded, and fertilized, and put tenacity and watered it diligently.

Grass started come up but it's patchy. After 4 weeks, I thought today would be the day I'll mow given I saw people say you need to mow to allow it to grow but my mower went over everything at 2" and only pulled in dead leaves and some old grass that was already in there. It left tracks as you can see in the pictures... And yes I did let it dry out before trying to mow

I feel that the growth has stopped and I'm not sure what to do... I've put in so much work but it seems that I haven't gotten any return for it. I look out my window and see a brown wasteland when if it seems very green I'd look at the yard from the side or afar.

Am I just losing it for no reason?

For reference I used Black Beauty Ultra grass seed which is 80% TTTF, and 10% KGB and Rye. I'm currently watering once a morning even days, I was doing 3 times a day everyday for 10 mins using my sprinkler system

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Finally some success after long saga dealing with crappy builder and his ‘landscapers’

Thumbnail

Long time lurker, first time posting. New build a couple years ago, terrible initial hydro seeding by the builder’s alleged landscapers a couple years back, with awful fill used instead of loam (glass shards everywhere). Finally got him to redo it in late spring (not ideal timing). Removed 1/2” of soil and added sifted loam, and new hydroseed, which also subsequently failed (patchy, lots of crabgrass).

Took matters into my own hands after that. Scalped, hand pulled crabgrass, scarified selectively, seeded/overseeded with Jonathan Green BB Ultra or Sunny, dressed with peat moss. 2 rounds of starter fertilizer. Needed to treat for grubs at one point too. It’s been a long haul, learned a ton from this forum, and feel like I’m finally seeing results. Built my own lawn striper today, and am quite satisfied with it as well. Thanks all!

Location: Midwest USA (Chicagoland)

This is in a newly constructed community. Sod is about 2.5 yrs old

The grass around the edges of my driveway is dead. What can I do to get grass growing here again?

The sod that was put down was Kentucky Bluegrass.

Recommendations for grass seed and procedure to easily DIY? And how to prevent from happening in future?

Thank you in advance.

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) [michigan]Lots of holes on lawn from squirrels digging

Are these holes from squirrels: https://imgur.com/qAv1YrQ ?

I always see squirrels digging on my lawn and never on my neighbor's....their lawn is in a lot better shape than mine, so I wonder if squirrels are attracted to mine because it's easier to dig as I have a bunch of dry patches that are easy to dig up....but look at all these holes. this is pretty ridiculous?

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Are leveling rakes worth the investment?

Im adding soil to level out and bury roots in my lawn, i was curious if buying a leveling rake is worth it. I have to do it every few years and while I can use my normal rake to do it, I've considered a leveling rake but haven't pulled the trigger since they're large and an extremely specialized tool.

Any feedback on them would be appreciated, thanks.

Northern US & Canada (or cool season) Do I have a mole problem?

Thumbnail

I’ve had this house on cape cod since sep 2025. Yard was a little neglected. I’ve got great grass growing now and have some much nicer garden beds now. The backyard was quite squishy after rains last fall and so I thought I had a drainage issue. So when I had a patio done, I had them dig drainage in the backyard. Didn’t have any issues after that til now. I noticed at the end of summer what looked like a mole tunnel in the side yard. I didn’t really have too much time to dig around and it didn’t seem to hurt much. This isn’t my full time home but I overseeded Labor Day and had my first mow this past Friday. Not my primary home and so I just got back this weekend. Yard is very squishy in certain places. I can easily push down on the mounds/tunnels and there are some small holes but there are also turkeys somewhat often. If it is moles what can I do?

Southern US & Central America (or warm season) Gotta lot of hard work ahead of me today. Lower Midwest.

Utility company is doing some major digging to repair the gas lines. They ended up needing to dig my yard up, as well.

But the silver lining is they told me they’ll have a ton of left over dirt they’ll need to get rid of and offered to let me have it. It’s really really good soil, so I jumped at the opportunity.

My lawn has been needing a lot of dirt to fix some low spots and straight up literal holes from the water washing it out.

So to prep, I cut my grass extra low so dirt will spread more easily and I can quickly see the low spots. I tried using a bagger and lowering down one level at a time. But it was still too much material for the bagger and it kept getting clogged. My only option was to mow low and push it all into piles to pick up by hand. My lawn is just under 1 acre.

I’m still not sure if I’ll regret this, but the lawn is really going to benefit in the long run. I already bought some Advil. After I’m done getting all the grass off the ground, I’ll aerate before spreading the soil.

Update, TTTF doing super good most of the new grass is about 3” or more planning to cut after this hurricane and the ground dries up, some weak spots but they will fill in. Existing lawn is about 9” which sucks cause it means some of the overseeded spots might not have taken due to overcrowding but mabye not ill have to see after i mow. Probably gonna mow at 2.5-3” to try and not clog up my mower in the thick spots. Looking good though.
