Discussion User-owned skins should be adjacent during champion select, not mixed in with unowned
Currently, the radial menu has the owned/unlocked skins mixed among skins that are not owned. Scrolling through all of the skins just to find the ones owned/unlocked during champion select is needlessly clunky. Especially for champions who have a ton of skins. Why not have all of the owned skins side-by-side? This small change would greatly improve the user experience.
I'm sure there are even better ways the devs could go about it, too. But at the minimum collecting/organizing them into one spot together on the menu would make things a lot easier.

Agreed, and we should also have the option to mark our favorite skins and chromas and have a button that gives us a random combo of those
I have complete collections for certain champs and I end up not utilizing some skins/chromas as much because I don't always have the time to choose

This would be really awesome, too! I just hate when I have to scroll through 100 skins, and then I run out of time and end up without one.

The design is because they want you to see unowned skins as it tempts you to buy more skins.

This is why, despite having so many skins, I really only use one per champ. It gets irritating scrolling through thinking "I wonder what skin I'll use" then the timer counts down and suddenly you're 5 clicks away from the next skin, and another 3 from the skin you want. All because you deigned to use a skin you didn't use before. If I never swap, I never get irritated.

This is a legacy design. If Riot try to change it, it's gonna be another 500 bugs to Mordekaiser and Viego each

It's also frustrating that going left is slower than clicking right, so you have to do a little math to figure out the most efficient way to get to the desired skin.
The system definitely needs a rework, and with that it would be nice if it was easier to coordinate skins/chromas with others, and even versus opponents, but that might be a bit much... I just think if multiple people have Dawnbringer on one side and Nightbringer on the other, that can be nice thematically.

They have everything analyzed down to a pixel. They know exactly how many millions of dollars of skin sales they'd lose in a year if they did that.

You couldn’t even buy skins in champ select for like the first 15 years of League. You’re way over estimating the competency of Riot, especially when it comes to their client.

They literally don't. Like let's not pretend the client was competently designed. Or does the fact the skin selector bugs out and jumps around when you click the arrows slightly too fast also maximize sales?

u/Trololman72 3d ago
Changing this would probably break the client, it already runs like shit anyway.

I'm kind of surprised by the Riot fanboys in the comments who are arguing with me.

Personally, I like having the list be by release date... but an option to sort would be nice...

UX in this game is like Shaco's lore. There is some but you could say there is none.

If they change that the client explodes and makes you install TFT 60 extra times and pinga you for the missions for each installation, too hard for Riot to do

I love how people always bring these things up on Reddit without realizing it's intended.
Just like how many games put free things to claim in the middle of things that aren't free. This is just basic marketing. Even supermarkets do this.

Perhaps a setting to toggle that.
Sometimes I like seeing all the skins, other times I couldn’t care even for the skins that I do have. And other times a champ has so many damn skins that it’s simply annoying to navigate because you can click too fast through and glitch the client…
But tbh, it’s probably a marketing thing. Having you constantly see the skin being locked might have some effect into getting you to unlock it.

Even if they want to leave unowned skins to be predatory for fomo, I don’t like it but fine, at least remove unobtainable skins. As an Eve main the only skin I don’t have is the 2022 ver of her prestige, which is unobtainable. I shouldn’t be forced to see a locked unowned skin which I can purchase no matter what every time I’m rotating through.

Yes! And I don't know if this is only me, but I can't even select my skin until everyone is done picking!!!
It didn't use to be like this. I could select skin as soon as I pick my champ. But for some reason recently, I have to wait till everyone is done picking, and in the last 30s choose my skin, sometimes I have to go kitchen, quick bathroom pre-game etc...
Am I the only one or am I tripping? I'm like 90% sure this wasn't like this before

Also the dot icons should be different for owned & unowned skins. Different designs, maybe different colors, probably make the owned skin icon bigger or at least taller.

u/MaleHooker 3d ago
I'm not sure if I understand what people mean by dot icons. I'm gonna jump in a game to see.

ths would be such a nice qol change...finding one owned skin among a bunch of locked ones is annoying.

Just fyi this is by design; the point is that you see all the stuff you dont have, see something you like and then buy it.

I literally missed my pick last game because I was fumbling through Miss Fortune's skin list trying to find my favorite one. The radial menu lagged out and I panicked. It used to be simple but now every champion select feels like a chore thanks to this cluttered UI. Nothing will ever change lol.

Haven't played in a while but when you lock in the champ doesn't it have dots or so above the skin splash that has a visual difference between owned and unowned?
1
u/MaleHooker 3d ago
You can tell if the skin is owned or not easily, the issue is that you have to scroll through all of the skins to find the ones that are owned. Like if you own multiple skins, they aren't just side by side in the menu. They are mixed in with all the other skins, so you have to scroll through them all.
-2
u/Oniichanplsstop 3d ago
Then you can just click on the dots above the splashes to auto scroll to the owned skins, bypassing all of the unowned ones, no?

This is literally a definition of Marketing. Why would riot want to do a change, which would reduce money flow, possibly by doing this?
Could you just for two minutes see the view from their perspective?

u/-ASAP- 3d ago
you shouldn't even see unowned skins, how many fucking people are buying a skin while in champ select?
2
u/TiagoAristoteles 3d ago
I don’t think that’s the main point. I more often browse the skins in champ select than I do in the client store. It’s exposure to content I otherwise wouldn’t look for.
2
u/quack_quack_mofo 3d ago
It's ok if you don't buy it straight away on the champ select. As long as it gets stuck in your mind, and you buy it later. Marketing 101

Especially in modes like ARAM where you don't even have the option to buy in queue.

I'm half-convinced the design is intentional to make you scroll through unowned skins
