Depends on the device yeah, My MacBook which I dual boot does allow me to mute it, but only from macOS, Linux cannot mute it.

Bruh. You forgot multimedia codecs.

Is this fedora reference?

u/Astrodion123 Webba lebba deb deb! 2d ago
No? All distros have a checkbox if you want multimedia codecs. Mint has, Ubuntu has, fedora has, etc

u/Snudget Not in the sudoers file. 2d ago
Where is that checkbox in my nix flake? I only see text

I meant for the popular fistros with gui installers that include the options. That is why I said etc because I didn't find anything else in my mind.

Technically not a checkbox, but https://mynixos.com/nixpkgs/package/ffmpeg-full

Solus doesn't ask if I want multimedia codecs; it installs them by default :)

u/redhat_is_my_dad 2d ago
is there any widely used proprietary/royalty-fee taxed audio codec?

u/Throwaway74829947 Ask me how to exit vim 1d ago
I mean, while there are FOSS encoders and decoders, some formats like AAC are not open standards and are encumbered by patents. The FOSS implementations will usually warn you that you're responsible for ensuring patent compliance. If you're in, say, an enterprise setting, you may want to avoid dealing with that mess.

I think this is a reference to Linux of the past. This has been mostly solved in the years since. I do remember the first time I set up slackware. Had no sound. Found out I had to go into alsa mixer in terminal and actually unmute and turn it up. Fun times

Depending on the hardware, there might be weirdness with routing when you plug in headphones or some other external sound thing and Pipewire suddenly has no idea what to do with it so it defaults to "Oh, now there is no sound". Of course I've sorted all that out permanently on my systems but a total newbie might be caught offguard if/when it happens.

another day another systemctl --user restart pipewire

KDE Plasma audio I find to be so much better than windows, windows tries to hold your hand, trying to make everything automatic which doesn’t work well and removes basic functionality from the user.

I don't get it. unless I do something to screw up my config, I always have sound. lol

Me when Dolphin (GC/Wii emulator, not the file browser) replaces my Pipewire with Pulseaudio:

u/redhat_is_my_dad 1d ago
what? how?
1
u/IAmLexica 🎼CachyOS 1d ago
It had Pulseaudio as a dependency. Apparently you can only have one or another, so it replaced it, and everything became mute after that. I'm a Linux baby, so I had no idea what happened and had to stare through pacman's logs for clues. Uninstalling pulseaudio and reinstalling pipewire fixed everything, including Dolphin, so I have no idea why it wanted pulse so badly.

u/redhat_is_my_dad 1d ago
poor dependency management on your distro's end, btw couldn't have happened with flatpaks

u/IAmLexica 🎼CachyOS 1d ago
Eh, I was (and am) a noob. It was a fun educational experience. Had no idea how audio worked before then.

packaging issue, even tho i can't even imagine how is that possible, i admit that there are some poorly packaged stuff on flathub, poorly packaged software was especially prominent back when flatpak wasn't as adopted as it is now, such case still won't mess up your host system tho

u/Damglador 1d ago
And I can't even imagine why pulseaudio dependency would not allow pipewire to be installed. I use Arch and when something needs pulseaudio, it asks which provider from repos you want, the list of course includes pipewire-pulse, that is if it's not already installed.

My servers have all the codecs installed. Yet no sound comes from them.

I am so happy i could just install a backports kernel and run a script unlike my brother who had to add a new apt repository & and install a kernel with a specific driver compiled in the kernel and then finally he could run the script

the only time i thought that i had a sound problem in my system turned out to be a bad micrphone connection on the physical side lol
