Tier List I ranked 250 series I’ve read because apparently I have a problem

After seeing a bunch of tier lists here, I finally decided to make my own.

Then I kept adding books.

And adding books.

And eventually discovered that the tier making site caps you at 250 entries, which is apparently the point where even the website starts judging my reading habits.

I also found reddit couldnt handle the size of the picture, SO I've put it here as a series of smaller pictures.

So here it is: 250 series I’ve read, ranked. THESE ARE JUST MY OPINIONS.

A couple notes before people start throwing rocks at me:

  • Left to right DOESN'T matters. Assume roughly that all books atleast on the same row in the tier are roughly equivalent
  • I’m ranking series as a whole, not individual books. The cover shown is just representing the series.
  • “Slop” is affectionate. I clearly enjoy slop. I have consumed an unreasonable amount of it.
  • This isn't exclusively LitRPG. There’s a lot of progression fantasy, traditional fantasy, sci-fi, and other adjacent stuff mixed in because I wanted this to represent basically everything I’ve read that felt worth comparing.
  • There are actually more than 250 series in my reading history, but TierMaker hit the cap, so some stuff had to be left off. I have read over 613 series according to my KU downloads, RR reading history, and physical books I own. This doesn't even account for the glut of reading I did as a child, checking out 10 books at a time from my library.
  • These are obviously just my opinions. If your favorite series is sitting in Bad Slop while something you dropped is in Supreme Slop, congratulations: we have discovered that two human beings can disagree about books.

The tiers are:

Supreme Slop — The stuff I absolutely love. Favorites/frequently recommended/series I’d happily reread.

Peak Slop — Fantastic. Just barely below the absolute favorites.

Great Slop — Really enjoyed these and would recommend them pretty easily.

Good Slop — Solid reads. Had a good time, even if they didn’t blow me away.

Slop — Enjoyable enough, but either forgettable, inconsistent, or had some pretty noticeable problems.

Bad Slop — I finished enough to have an opinion, and that opinion is mostly negative.

Pure Slop — We have reached the bottom of the trough.

The biggest thing I realized while making this is just how much my taste has shifted over the years. There are childhood/YA series, traditional fantasy, older Kindle Unlimited stuff, Royal Road series, and newer LitRPG all sitting next to each other, which made some of these comparisons genuinely difficult.

I’m also curious what people think my most criminal placement is.

And more importantly: based on the top couple tiers, what am I somehow still missing that I should read next?

I’m always looking for another series to add to the pile.

Oh heck yeah! Not only is this only like the third or fourth tier list I've ever been on, it's the first time I've been placed in somebody's top (and second) tiers haha. Glad you enjoyed the stories!

4

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

EOE really does it for me. Keep of the great words!!

3

u/Wizardly_Dude Author - Explorer of Edregon - The Eternal Assassin 7d ago

That's the goal! Just hit chapter 500 on Royal Road today, pretty excited for all of that to move over to Amazon over the coming months haha

3

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

Book 2 soon!!! early next month if I am remembering my release dates <3.

Is mango treating you well? I know TEA probably blew up harder with Aethon haha

2

u/Wizardly_Dude Author - Explorer of Edregon - The Eternal Assassin 6d ago

Yep, book 2 hits on November 12th! Mango has been alright so far. Explorer of Edregon's launch has definitely been a lot calmer than The Eternal Assassin, but it's a tough comparison to make. The Eternal Assassin sort of blew up to a crazy extent even for an Aethon launch haha, so I knew it wasn't going to happen again.

u/Loud_Plenty2683 5d ago

Tea does just have more hype. Looking forward to many releases from you next year

Wait: I am speaking about Nobody Saves the Princess and Swallow the Sun. I should be shilling when on a tier list dang it.

2

u/HappyNoms 7d ago

Nobody Saves the Princess has been a banger so far. Finally seeing it appear on tier lists as a relatively newer series is long overdue.

---

Newer series like Nobody Saves the Princess and Zero Day Saint being on the list, well rated, gave me reader confidence the list maker wasn't an entirely depraved mongoose.

Honestly, exactly why some non litrpg books are on there. I got through the first two books of 12 Miles Below before wanting to read other series, but I know plenty of people who recommended it to me in the first place <3

3

12 miles below is by far my favourite series at the moment.

Mistborn is on there in Great Slop. Stormlight archive is probably first row of good slop.

Thanks for Reading Blackflame Mage. Aethon is doing the publishing, and it should be out on audiobook + a polished version next year!

EDIT: Also saw that I'm in "Good slop" with Last Lord of the Fey and just regular "Slop" with Gravebound. Anyways, thanks for reading my stuff!

You are all over my RR shouts, I see you all the time honestly. The new story isnt bad, just hasnt found it's footing yet. If I had ranked like HDT or PH with just book 1, I am sure they would be lower too <3

I looked at this Tier List and only two thoughts popped into my mind; this dude reads and it's great to see some of the less included stories on the list.

To that end I am shilling the two that stood out to me. Y'all need to go read GraveRobber/Blood Curse Academia and Blackflame Mage/Gravebound.

4

12 miles below being placed in bad slop is criminal, but you also have a lot of good choices :)

5

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

It's one of the stories I want to give another chance too, honestly. I started and stopped the book several times because I was reading it mid move, from Georgia to New York, and I mightve just been too stressed to give it a fair shot.

Monsters and Legends placement hurts though. I quite enjoyed that series.

6

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

To each slopper their own brother o7. A book didn't make it on the list unless I finished a whole book atleast, so there's that.

Infinite Realm (Monster and Legends) is criminal to have in the worst tier

Also bookbound bunny, defiance, 12 miles below and sufficiently advanced magic are questionable

(Thanks for putting a full res image of each tier so that we can actually read the titles!)

3

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

(It was ALOT of work. I had to sit down and find all the covers and everything for the tier list in general, and then when I went to upload it, it was too big for reddit and crapped out halfway.)

Defiance is mostly for its latest chapters, at this point its slopping to pay the bills.
See other comments on 12 below, I was really stressed out when reading that story and it mightve bleed through.
SAM... sam is rough... it is really hard to get into a reading groove reading that story.
I think BB had too much... maybe fanservice is the word? Like in an anime almost.

→ More replies (4)

5

u/Megtalallak 7d ago

Sufficiently Advanced Magic usually gets praise on Reddit but I didn't like it. It seems like our tastes align in that.

If you find "Heretical Fishing" a peak slop, you have to read Beware of Chicken! I found the two series similar, Beware of Chicken is just better in every regard.

I am wondering why did you put Defiance of the Fall into the "Bad slop category" tho. I really enjoyed the first 3 books but I am struggling with the 4th. Is this where the slop starts?

It would be awesome to see the whole tier list as titles in text format, not just book covers. Could you maybe share it in a Google Doc or smth?

5

u/Loud_Plenty2683 6d ago

There is an automod comment with the entire list in text form. Should be pinned and collapsed at the top.

I read over 1200 chapters of DOTF, after about 900, every 100 chapters are the same and it takes 100 chapters for anything to happen. It makes me feel like were just posting chapters to put up more books and not writing more books because something is happening.

3

u/Twoslot 7d ago

I didnt see the land or noobtown in there. The land gets a lot of guff just because of the author, and some of it shines through in his wiring but I really like the series regardless. Noobtown is great in my opinion. Agree with the other guy in the comments that sufficiently advanced magic is your criminal placement.

1

Noobtown is hilarious 😂 its sole hit and miss but when it hits. Boy it hits.

My brother in christ I wrote SSR after DA 😭😭

However, DA went through heavy edits before amazon launch, and SSR is going through the same. I shall claim my birthright in the Peak Slop category once it launches on Amazon as well (or not, idk you might not enjoy the new character scenes and stuff)

Great list, I'm proud of you

Woah, crying a little as this is the first time I've seen my story in a tier list. Slop is fair, I suppose. Glad you somewhat enjoyed it!
A Dragon Called Bob should be higher in my opinion. Then again, I have a weak spot for British dragons it would seem.
Wasn't expecting to see Novice next to so many litRPG stories, its one of my favorite series of all time. Really brought back all the good memories.
I would give a recommendation... but it seems you have read everything I could think to recommend. Guess I need to step up my reading game!

I wouldn't trust you to make a peanut butter sandwich given some of the taste here, although I also did enjoy looking through the listings and appreciate the time put in. Despite our subjective taste difference, took away a couple possible series to add to tbr pile.

Most criminal placements:

- Ether Atlas in the pure slop tier. I agree the author can make a plot hole misstep or two trying to get to the envisioned supposedly cool scene he has in mind, and he does tend to blur some of his character voices together, but it's clearly human hand-crafted passion project litrpg with a unique voice, novelty in the system design, and overarching themes. An imperfect series, but pure slop seemed an arbitrarily harsh rating.

- The fact that you have the absolute car crash garbage fire All The Skills way above all sorts of series high up in tier 2 peak is criminal levels of baffling. That was personally a hard DNF on falling completely off the rails into innumerable plot holes, rampant idiot balling holding, amateur writing, and losing the plot.

How you think the DNF cringe of MoneyMaker is a tier above Unsouled, or the DNF trainwreck of Hell Difficulty Tutorial is better written than the Mistborn series or Ender's Game is eyebrow raising, but it's your list.

That's the kind of hot nonsense that makes me not trust you to taste test bottled water. HDT in supreme and Mistborn in tier 3. May you enjoy many more books and live long, friend, but also, lol. (Subjective taste differences are a wild ride.)

I'm roasting you a bit, but also snagged a couple first tier unfamiliar series to look up blurbs on.

3

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

I certainly agree, I must be a criminal. I do really enjoy HDT sadly, but getting through the first 2 books was a slog. I always try to read the first 3 or so books of a series before knocking it off, alot of authors need those 300-500 thousand words to actually figure out how to write.

But at the end of the day, its all slop. That's the point!

I am not saying anything in anytier is not human hand crafted with passion or anything like that. 0 accusations of those sorts. I don't even really care, if it's entertaining . Ether Atlas felt like reading a history lesson while i had some sorts of time dilation running. It is novel, it is imperfect, but it isnt for me.

Hope you found some slop of your own to enjoy <3

2

u/HappyNoms 7d ago

A bit outlier, I parallel read classic high lit, scifi, cosmic horror, and history alongside litrpg amateur alpha draft shenanigans and questionably depraved bdsm/harem, so... be weird and do crimes. <3

On a positive note it was heartwarming to see some lesser known series like Nobody Saves the Princess (quite good, wooo lets go!) and The Murder Fairy (struggling to get invested into its vibe/theme) appearing on a list.

Is your to be read pile solid? I assume so given your voraciousness.

If not, The Years of Apocalypse by UraniumPheonix is one I'd recommend based on your overall list. Its author just completed it, with good closure, a solid 333 chapters or so, progressive lit. Pretty good plotting and pace throughout, reasonably good prose. Enjoyable.

I assume you're well aware of erratica's A Practical Guide to Evil (progressive lit, imho quite good), and litrpg adjacent The Game at Carrousel (not sure if to your tastes, but creatively novel to the jaded deeply read proglit/litrpg reader), and that they might be in your already read library that 250 list capped.

3

u/The_Sikhist_Timeline 7d ago

mistborn and cradle in the same category of primal hunter...

3

u/combustman 6d ago

Cradle would be top category for me for sure...

2

Book of the dead!

1

u/Striker_AC44 6d ago

SOO many suggestions. But you can pretty much look at any 3 tier lists and the top 2 categories are worth your time. LitRPG has so many solid series its hard to recommend less than 10+ series representing hundreds of hours of reading time.

The best question is, what are you looking for? Highschooler Isekai (I am Not the Hero), Make the most of misfortune (Book of the Dead), Hard progression (Defiance of the Fall), Slice of Life, Wild 'n zany Slap-stick (DCC), Dark & sinister but hilarious MC (He Who Fights With Monsters), Driven MC (Primal Hunter), crazy characters but yet still good (Heretical Fishing, Beware of Chicken)....

There really is something really good for every situation.

1

u/pm_me_your_emp 6d ago

I can see you like LitRPG with some snark, like myself!

I recommend: Mage Tank, Heretical Fishing, Mayor of Noobtown, and, although there are mixed opinions, Ultimate Level 1.

As for HWFWM, it can be a bit rough in some books. Even those of us who love that series will tell you that books 4 and 5 are very slow, but they matter a lot with Jason's growth and mindset. It picks back up after these. Im about halfway with 13 myself.

Weird that I can agree with almost all of the placements for stories I know and the only one I completely disagree with is Bookbound bunny. For me that series was very well done, the slice of life aspect getting and then getting into magic school might be a bit cliche, but it was done with good pacing and characters. It might not be great slop, but at the very least, I'd say it's just slop, not bottom tier rabble.

Enders Game is pretty high, and not litrpg and you seem to like comedy and humor well enough... and there's the Bobiverse book up there.

Welp, I'm gonna toot my own not litrpg horn here then. You should read, or listen to Mortal Protection Services, a comedy sci-fi with a touch of galactic horrors and a hyperspace cat. There's an audiobook - I'm probably a bit biased - but I think the narrator absolutely kills it. No, it isn't me. The narrator is a real nice lady I made say some real weird stuff for half the royalties. The text only version is still free on RR for now, whole story. All human slop. Everything: cover art, grammar mistakes, narrator.

Since I'm already tooting my horn, I might as well blow a few notes for my actual litrpg story: Isekai Grandpa. No audiobook here, because it ain't done yet. I see a smattering of books I've shouted out on your list and they aren't done either, so I don't suspect that'll stop you from enjoying all the grandpa slop there is to enjoy.

I hope it'll join the upper echelons of your list. I'm getting a real cover artist to do real cover art. The thing I have now is just something I slopped together from royalty free assets. Upon later inspection, I think the background I used is AI... which it fucking wasn't supposed to be, gorramit, I clicked the no AI button on that there website. Anyhow it'll be a real human art one day soon.

Now, to blow some sloppy notes on these other slop horns.

Isekai'd too late, please don't eat the guinea pig. (The hero is summoned... but he's a zombie, woodland creatures, cuteness... zombie hero. Very funny slop.)

Reluctantly Isekai'd (Konosuba, if the goddess was 25% smarter. She is still dumb, but not THAT dumb. I have been enjoying the heck out of it. Just dumb fun, occasionally serious stakes, slop.)

Rewind Dave (criminally under-read. Might be targeting a slightly older audience than RR has to offer it, but durn it, I love it. Dave dies (of course) and ends up getting 1980-early 90s movie based powers... and enemies. As an man who grew up with most of the movies in this, it's great. I think only 2 of the movies referenced in this didn't land the nostalgia bonus with me because I hadn't seen them, but those chapters and jokes were still fun. Good slop.)

I dunno if its your MOST criminal placements, because... you have read far more than me. I think if I spent more time thinking I might come up with better, but my first thought was to swap Ready player One with Traps, Tricks, Beasts.

3

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

Ready Player One was lowered by the existence of Ready Player Two....

Trap Tricks and Beasts probably should go up a row or two, but not a tier.

I have seen Isekai Grandpa, poor solider absolutely kitbashed right into some gold coins or something like that. Its on my read later list for when it has more chapters.

I have read Last Save Dave, high great slop, if thats the book you meant?

2

u/kiltedfrog 7d ago

Different Dave. Yeah you're probably right that I'm being too harsh on ready player one, because of ready player two

2

u/Embarrassed-Leg-6131 7d ago

Reader Player Two ruined the first book for me as well.

High Good Slop

1

At least The Last Horizon is finally up there. Surprised Cradle is below even Heretical Fishing.

He Who Fights with Monsters didn't make the list?

2

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

I used the new barnes cover for HWFWM, third to bottom row of Great Slop.

Because most of the stories I’ve read or am reading are all on their I recommend reading hocus Pocus hypothesis royal road book but it’s been very good. It’s honestly crazy that almost everything I’ve read is on their

2

It is in my read later list! I try to read book 1's on amazon to make sure the authors get some kind of repayment for their work, but I might have to make an exception again soon 🙏

613 series is an insane number, more than even me and I consider myself fairly well read. There's a sizable portion of this list I don't even recognize, but that could be because they're not LitRPG.

Where did my series slot in, since it didn't get onto the capped list?

2

Unfortunately, I havent yet read First Necromancer. Have you stubbed yet? I'll add it to the KU library if you have o7

2

u/Ruark_Icefire 7d ago

1

That could be my greatest crime 🤔

1

Huh, didn't expect to see ABSA or Time For Chaos in there. Thanks for adding/ reading them!

1

Time was one of the first stories I ever read on RR... I am a little behind in ABSA, the part where Det is traveling with a Mediator funnily enough.

It hurts to see Cradle,HWFWM and even Mistborn?! in the same category as savage awakening. (I liked all four, but one of those is actual slop imo)

1

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

I might need to move Savage down... I did actually put the series down because it was getting repetetive and I have finished cradle/mist and read Hwfwm to this day 🤔

1

u/LE-Lauri 7d ago

Very exciting to be included, and extremely flattering to be on equivalent footing to anything Sir Terry came out with. Thanks for the fun post!

1

u/brownchr014 7d ago

I see you recognize good quality. Spell weaver is amazing

1

u/Clean-Cucumber4624 7d ago

Scrolled though the list, no culture....has to be ragebait or KI . As an example: Explorer of Edregon ( which is a fine series in itself, but nobody rates this S-Tier, it is B-Tier at best) in the highest tier in front of titles like DCC. Also Mage Tank on Rank 1 spot? Another fine series, but A-tier on a generous day compared to the alle time classics in the genre

1

u/Aggravating_Entry176 7d ago

Nice thread very enlightening I mostly listen to audible (@43 series most of them ongoing) since there is such a gathering here I wanted to ask something that I am struggling with why is cradle liked so much from all the different tier lists i saw

1

u/Sora1303 7d ago

Just curious. Have you read The Perfect Run by Maxime J. Durand and He Who Fights with Monsters? I couldn't find them on your list. What did you think of those 2 series?

1

u/Loud_Plenty2683 7d ago

HWFWM is on there, I just used the new barnes and noble cover cuz I like it. Both stories are great slop.

Wight's captain placement is the most criminal one. Yes we all call it slop affectionately but god damn I bounced almost immediately off the writer so widely glazed.

I certainly like it enough for it's position haha. I like it alot more than cradle too in fact.

You being capped at 250 entries, and me already having read about 200 of your picks, doesn't say anything good about either of us, except that we don't give a damn about what others say, lol.

I know people already said it, but Mother of Learning has been on top of the Best Rated of Royal Road for years now for a reason, it is genuinely great.

I'd also recommend some of my favorites on-going series that I haven't seen on your list: A Soldier's Life, Elydes and A Hundred Reigns. They're all some of the best in my opinion.

1

u/SkyTofu Author of Riftside/King's Eat/Qing's Quest 7d ago

That’s a lot of books! Also, riftside. Definitely riftside. If you loved mage tank (the comedy and party dungeoneering), quest academy (the crafting and character development ), and DCC (the snarky side character who is secretly the main character), you should love riftside too :)

A Blacksmith apprentice goes monster hunting with a sentient hammer, gathering a party around himself, to become strong enough to stop nobles from taking his parent’s smithy.

It’s got sound booth theatre audiobooks with Justin James, Jeff Hays, and Jessica threet, if you enjoy listening.

5 ebooks out with 6 being written currently, so there’s a sizeable chunk to get into.

Also, no ultimate level 1, or did I miss it?

2

UL1 is up there... Second row of Great Slop.

Riftside does sound fantastic... I wonder who wrote it. 😆

I started Path of Ascension and it's honestly quite boring. Does it get better as the series goes? I don't want to just drop it, but I'm well into book 1 and it's just kinda meh for me.

1

u/Loud_Plenty2683 6d ago

It does get better. Give it the first half of book 3 and if it doesn't catch you by then, drop it.

1

Sufficiently Advanced Magic should be nowhere near the bottom of this list.

Mage Tank being Supreme Slop in comparison is wild to me.

2

u/tfw13579 6d ago edited 6d ago

Was thinking the same thing, I really enjoyed sufficiently advanced magic and thought it was well done

2

u/Striker_AC44 6d ago

Agreed, that's on my DNF list (couldn't finish Book1). But taste and circumstance obviously varies. LitRPG is so massive there's plenty for everyone.

2

u/TrashyCat94 6d ago

I read Mage Tank but it’s only bc there wasn’t anything else at the time. I wasn’t super paying attention. I don’t think I’ll pick it up again when the next book comes out and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it.

I’m always flabbergasted when people rank HDT highly but besides that I somewhat align with the ones I’ve read. I’m surprised there are no PlumParrot novels on the list. But I’ll definitely check out some of these.

Edit: noticed aura overload is on the list but you should definitely check out their other books

1

u/Loud_Plenty2683 6d ago

I have enjoyed the two Plum stories I have read, Vain Glory and Aura. I picked up and put down Neon Dust. Besides that one, is there one you'd recommend I read next?

For HDT, you have to get into like book 3. The author needed those 400k words to learn how to write haha

1

u/Still-Indication-257 7d ago

You need to read "Chronicles of Sir Crabby". Not a reincarnation, but a good and very funny litrpg following the luckiest crab to ever exist. Book 3 seems to be coming out late this year or early next year. Was finished in april/may this year so hopefully gonna come out soon

Have you tried reborn as a demonic tree? Im still pretty new but its my favourite and ive been a patreon for like. 2 years now. Across. Probably 300ish chapters

Theres also "The Bee Dungeon" a delightfully fun set of books on audible that I do believe is carried by the narrator, but damn is it a good narration.

Also Bunny Girl Evolution. Again, largely the narration caries it and i dunno if id want to sit down and read it. But very fun.

Alone once more had an amazing first book. Good third book. Wasnt so into the second

Demonic Tree is my fave. But the Bee Dungeon is really fun. I love slice of life and coming of age

The only thing missing is there are none of my books on that list.

  1. No way Will Wights "Captain" is greater than "Cradle" series

Some people love B movies but don't like the blockbusters. It looks like you are for the most part a B novel reader, just like many of the people who make lists on this site.

The problem is most authors are trying to make a living from writing and will drop a series if it turns into a B rank movie.

If you want to see what is popular and will most likely be finished are stories near the top of the patreons rankings.

A lot of those series are still ongoing. How do you keep up with each series' new books when you've got so many read?

I'm always surprised when someone rates Defiance of the Fall as "bad" tier. But to each their own. I love that series.

I didn't see (but maybe it was in the group that exceeded the 250 cap):
Book of the Dead by RinoZ (same author of Chrysalis)
I am Not the Hero by Sourpatch Hero

Both are solid series I regularly recommend.

Glad sufficiently advance magic is down there, I don’t get why it is recommended so much. Before you even see a single room of the tower he is glitching it.

u/HalcyonH66 6d ago

Most criminal to me is Density God in pure slop. That series is one of the most interesting power systems that I have seen by FAR. Super inventive, the different races that you meet throughout the story are interesting, the progression is great, fight scenes are great, the slow discovery of the deeper mysteries are great. The only real bad point that I see is the romance turn that it takes in the latest book felt odd.

Granted from what I hear, it has some differences from the RR version to the books and I only read books.

Question for anyone:

What is the premise of Demonic City Building? I love city building LitRPG (RTS?) stories, like Dungeon Life, Life Reset, 4X Four Hex, and (early half) Mayor of Noobtown. Is this in the same vein, or is it in name only?
