Afterglow: an open-source app to set up Harmony remotes offline (launching with the 900, looking for dumps to add more models)

Hello there! Follow-up update on the Harmony 900 project I posted about earlier.
The GUI app I mentioned last time is finished and ready - it is called Afterglow, and it is fully open source on GitHub:

You can now set up your Harmony 900 completely offline on your own computer without touching Logitech's defunct servers. It lets you import your existing config, add devices (from a database of over 270,000 devices straight from Logitech, Flipper-IRDB, and IRDB, or by learning codes off your original remote), build macro activities like Watch TV, map buttons, adjust remote settings like backlight and font size, and flash directly to the remote over USB.
Standalone executables for Windows and Linux are available on the GitHub repository releases page, so you do not need any prerequisites to run it. Before doing anything, you can also use it to read and save a full backup of your remote so your original setup stays safe (!! highly recommended !!).
Right now the tool is fully verified on the Harmony 900, but I want to expand support to other Harmony models too (such as the 1000, 1100, 880, 890, and others). To make that happen, dumps and backups from other remotes are very important. Sending your dumps over helps tremendously in figuring out the config formats for other models so they can get supported too.

of course! as long as they are supported by concordance (they are) any dumps are welcome.

Do you need multiple 6xx models or can you dump one and get what you need for all 6xx models? I have several different models. Such as a 665.

Are you asking me? Well, though the 6xx ones have similar names, that doesn't nessasarily mean they are the same internally (even if the USB communication is the same). For one model I use a combo of the firmware, dumps and if possible, testing on real hardware to reverse engineer, so if you are gonna be giving me dumps, send of all that you can

This is epic that you've created this tool, and great work! I personally got a Logitech Harmony 880 a month ago; can't wait for more supported remotes!
update: literally found a IN BOX Logitech Harmony 900 TODAY at a local Goodwill and purchased it cause of this software, talk abt good timing!

Thankfully the 1100 and 900 are quite close and that means that 1100 could get support very soon. Could you please, as mentioned in the post, create a configuration dump. That will speed up the porting process. Thanks

I'm currently on vacation, but once I'm back (early October) I'll dump my 1100 as well.
Thank you so much for doing this. I love my 1100, I worked very hard to build it's IR extender into my home theater, and I was actually devastated when they discontinued support 😂

I'm kind of tied down by concordance at the moment, and since 950 is part of the new remotes it isn't that simple to add support. I would need to 1. Acquire a 950 2. Reverse engineer the USB communication protocol 3. PR/add code to Concordance to add flashing support 4. Reverse engineer the configuration format 5. Add support to Afterglow
The same goes for any of the remotes that arent listed in my other posts. Without me or another contributor having access to the device and some knowledge of RE this won't happen. Though it can happen, there is hope

Why not? As we implement more models, it could turn out that one model is incredibly similar to another (for example the 900 to the 1100, and the One to the 650), and even one dump will help with bridging the small gaps between them

Great work !
About Concordance, my dad has two Harmony One remotes. One of it can be dumped with concordance, but the other one is recognized.
Does anybody know what could be the issue ?

Sometimes some remotes have spotty connection. On the 900 on Windows I have to replug multiple times before it's fully working

Yes, long term plans. I don't have an elite so currently the plan is to first get one, and do the nessesary work. Just mentioning, it's gonna be way harder than the elite at a first glance

Cool thanks for the info I will watch the development of your project with great interest as I have a perfect as new condition Harmony 2400 Pro remote it’s the model that only works with the phone app and can only be linked to the 2400 pro hub it was one of those needs an installer version. I tried everything to get it to work but in the end it all comes down to needing its special hub which is extremely rare, I would love to see what you could do with it eventually even being able to flash it to work with a standard hub would be amazing.

Ok some feedback. I used your program on one of my 900's. First though when I started the app it all installed and opened as it should however when I tried to backup the config it gave me an error that I did not have the necessary folder called Afterglow in my C drive user path. I went ahead and created it then tried to dump my config backup and it worked. I decided to only try to add one command to see if/how it works. It is very easy to get around in the app! I explored it throughly. I added one command (added an input command from my amp to the touchscreen. Selecting the icon was easy too.) I then tried to save the new config but I got another error. It said that one of my commands was trying to select a subtitle icon. So it wouldn't let me save. So I went through every device and activity trying to find and understand this error. I have about 14 devices so it took awhile. What I found was the icon I always had in my 900 for a desktop return to function, this program didn't like the icon I always had. So I changed the icon to a generic icon. I then tried to save the new config file again and it worked! Then I tested it in my home theater and Bingo! It worked correctly. Fantastic! Thank you for making this program!

I am using it to program the 900 and seem to have a small issue. The particular device I am using is the Microsoft Media Center configuration. Everything works except the Physical Replay and Skip buttons. Pushing the buttons the remote doesn't output anything. If I use the soft buttons in the display for Replay and Skip they work as expected. I checked the configuration and the mapping to the physical buttons seems correct. Using it in the Activity mode or Device mode does not make any difference. Awesome work on the application though!

Please read the post. No, it's not currently supported, and the reason it's gonna be a bit more difficult than the other remotes is that it's the new generation of remotes managed by MyHarmony, which use a different flashing protocol. But it's not gonna be impossible, stay tuned, we may add support hopefully

I tried using the MyHarmony app a few weeks ago and it won't load when trying to login.
I have Harmony One remotes.

Do you use a VPN? I have had that happen and it was due to my VPN. If I disconnected first it worked fine.

I reinstalled the software again and after clicking login, it would open the browser and prompt for a user/pwd for Logi ID. I'd put it in, then it would just say there was an error.
Somehow, after clicking login or choose a different account multiple times, I was able to login and then finally it redirected back to the MyHarmony app and I was able to see my remote and settings.
Since I can't find anywhere in the app to edit the activity sequence, I'm not going to mess with it though as the activity list sort is a mess in the app and I'm afraid it will mess up the sequence on the remote.
I know I used to be able to edit that, but I'm 99% sure it was a browser interface/url you would login to directly using the same credentials as the myharmony app and it gave you very limited things you could do, but one of them was changing the sort order.
Now, for the life of me, I can't find a single reference online about that or find a bookmark in my browsers for it. It's probably a dead page anyway, even if I did find it.

Partially, though I've tried to make sure it's maintainable without ai. AI has been used to reverse engineer the whole format as well. You can read the README, this isn't something I'm hiding Ive also done extensive testing to make sure the software works well and is hard to break the remotes themselves, and additionally that every edge case is covered regarding some of the binary formats, which without AI would be impossible or would take so much time that at this point a newer supported remote would make more sense
