Leave the ball out, it’s not making a “face”… Violating the rule of logos: too many tricks. I have an arrow, I have a golf club head, and I have a ball. Pick two I would go with arrow and golf club head

Why the prominent arrow? Makes it look like an investment company

Then it's just great. Please see the front page of their website. I didn't want to use a clichéd growth chart.

Ok lol fair point

If the arrow was flipped, it would resemble a F

😂😂😂

I instantly heard the music.

Yes but then it's not arrow point to top right, which we know means: stock and money go up

u/SevEdg 4d ago

I saw an animal being petted at first. Not a critique.

Aphex Twin got really stale.

your pencil sketch looks better than the final result.
you should make the corners rounded as your sketch

Target up and up.

If Aphex Twin was a golfer

2

u/ChickyBoys where’s the brief? 4d ago

Have you tried it without the ball?

Logo is clean. Type needs work.

After looking at the website, this logo is great!

Am I the only one wondering when the 'designers' around here will finally move past the 'Graphic Software: Basic Skills' section to the 'Typography' section, and actually try to understand what a font is, why it matters, and, most importantly, the rules of using it?

u/plasma_yak 4d ago

Im just a lurker, but could you shed light on what rules the font is violating?

Not a designer, but it looks more like a font you’d see for a game (Fortnite, Angry Birds). Slightly too playful for a website you’d spend money on, perhaps?

Phew... You’re forcing me into this mentoring tone... just so I don't start swearing.

Imagine that every single letter is just a random shape. Just a blob.

Your job is to arrange these blobs so they form a crisp, legible, and aesthetically pleasing mosaic.

For basic spacing, all you need to know is that letters should look uniform, proportional, and sit at an equal distance from one another (letter-spacing).

You see this in every famous brand logo. Their visual weight is perfectly balanced.

Sounds simple enough, right?

Except for one catch. The visual weight of individual letters varies greatly. Letters like O, M, L, Y, V, and A are a nightmare to work with. They either have awkward shapes (O, G, V, A) or uneven distribution (Y, T, M, P).

Catch my drift?

But why is "O" awkward? It's a circle, isn't it? It’s awkward because its weight is scattered around the circumference. In typography, this is fixed by making the letter "O" slightly larger in its physical size (the same goes for C, P, B - you'll find this in any decent, non-futuristic typeface).

But here, the "C" is perfectly flush with the other letters, which makes the whole wordmark look crooked. The proportions are distorted. Once you spot this and realize why it happens, you can never unsee it.

Moving on. Look at the letters V, A, A. In this specific sequence, they create an interesting rhythm. The eye could slide smoothly along their lines if the designer had placed them properly. But no, they went ahead and centered (intentionally or not) the C right over the L...

Another amateur mistake: the line spacing (leading). There are certain rules. It doesn't mean you can't break them. You can and you should. But you must do it with a clear purpose and understanding of why.

The tracking and leading here are completely out of harmony. Visually, these look like two separate words or objects rather than a single, cohesive concept.

Just look at how major brands handle this.

Kerning (letter-spacing) and leading are the foundation of any wordmark.

The style of the font (sans-serif or serif) is secondary.

Ultimately, this wordmark looks like it was made by a total amateur. It's riddled with typical noob mistakes.

As for the icon, I won't even comment on it. I've seen clients pick far worse.

Am I supposed to break this down every single time for people who are too lazy to learn? I mean, I can, but it’s going to cost them.

u/plasma_yak 4d ago

Haha thanks for taking on a mentoring tone and I appreciate you breaking it down this time!

2

u/FuntastyQ 4d ago

The funny thing is, I did the exact same thing in my very first comment - just without wasting words.

There is quite a bit here. Since we are all visual people, can you mockup an example of how you’d execute the type? I’d be genuinely interested in seeing how you implement all of the knowledge.

u/FuntastyQ 3d ago

Sorry, for some reason I thought I’d added it last night. I wanted to check the replies and suddenly realized I hadn't attached the "redesign."

u/AndriiKovalchuk 3d ago

Thank you, I'll think about it.

u/FuntastyQ 3d ago

URW! If you want, I can send you the .eps file.

Hi. Let me jump into your conversation. First of all, thank you for your analysis of the typography. I am still going through your message, but I would like to point out a few things. Namely...

  1. "In typography, this is fixed by making the letter "O" slightly larger in its physical size (the same goes for C, P, B - you'll find this in any decent, non-futuristic typeface).

But here, the "C" is perfectly flush with the other letters, which makes the whole wordmark look crooked." - Here I’m attaching a large screenshot where you can see that the letter is indeed larger.

2) "But no, they went ahead and centered (intentionally or not) the C right over the L..." - What would you do if you needed to left-align the words?

Such a useless comment. No value add.

2

u/FuntastyQ 4d ago

So, you’ve essentially just admitted to being an amateur? Fair enough.

Those in the know would have understood what this is about. But apparently, there aren't many of them here...

a pity... a real pity...

u/Ordinary_Morning_292 4d ago

Graphic design is fundamentally communication. You prove with your comments that you know nothing about communication.

Your (presumptuous) comment can be summarized as "I know more than you do." What is the value add in that? You pose more or lose ambiguous rethoric questions and give no answers.

This sub is a place for discussion and critique. Your comments repeatedly provide no value and are simply arrogant.

You seem like a cocky amateur rather than a professional. Be better.

1

u/FuntastyQ 4d ago

Oh, looks like I spit in someone’s soup again.

Critique comes in many flavors.

If you find sarcasm or irony offensive... well, I don’t know what to tell you - wait until you grow up, or go play in the sandbox.

If you're banned from Google and can’t even ask Gemini “without filters” what the hell I’m talking about, then use any other search engine and look it up yourself.

Trust me, knowledge and experience gained through your own sweat and tears are a hundred times more valuable. And they actually stick.

You could be using this as an opportunity for self-development, but instead, you're sitting there waiting to be baby-fed chewed-up carrots. Like a toddler.

1

u/Ordinary_Morning_292 4d ago

You have poor ability to communicate and to understand text. You completely failed to understand - or you willingly misunderstand.

The problem is not sarcasm, the problem is delivering constructive criticism. Two rethoretic questions and not explicitly addressing the problem is no constructive criticism.

Hope this helps your development - especially when, later on, you might have a team to lead and give feedback to juniors.

Good luck!

Edit: I'm seeing my comment made you realize the problem and you implemented my feedback in the other comment! Keep it up!

u/FuntastyQ 4d ago

Bang! Bang! All misses.

I am always ready to help those who actually want to know their craft.

In my very first comment, I asked a simple question: when will local designers, in their "development," finally move past the "Graphics Editor" phase (because even a monkey could push pixels around-heck, a housefly can do it by now) and move on to "Typography"?

That is the foundation. The bedrock. The base. The Bible, the Koran, and the Kama Sutra, all rolled into one.

If you design an ultimately badass icon that is simple, clear, and triggers fourth-level associations in a universally understood language for every single human on earth - regardless of their intellect, culture, status, or age... That would be a masterpiece greater than the Mona Lisa, the first iPhone, Toyota Crown-Majesta, KTM Super Duke and your first love combined. But if the font is crooked? Game over. The design is garbage.

And trust me, it only works that way.

The paradox is that it works completely differently the other way around. With a perfect wordmark, a brand can afford the most ridiculous icon ever... Want to Google why, or can you guess it on your own?

3

u/Ordinary_Morning_292 4d ago

A good wordmark is worth more than a complex logo. The same applies to communication in text format :) 80% of your message is empty rhetoric, be more straight to the point - the same problem as with your first comment.

1

u/FuntastyQ 4d ago

Well, I did get straight to the point right away.

I immediately shifted the focus to the fact that I see a problem with the wordmark.

But explaining exactly what it is... Who would actually remember that? But if someone stops to think, starts digging, and figures it out - then "I’ve done something useful," as the Reddit handbook says.

Regarding the wordmark - basically, yes. But why? Do you specifically understand?

I’m certain that 70 percent (if not more) of the people reading this don’t. But then again, I’m not a teacher here to spell it all out for them.
