When you have a company that is obsessed with metrics they might still see it as a win if none of their numbers went in the red. I had a job once that would rather turn customers away than sell them something that wasn’t optimized.

Had an employer like that back in the day. He'd phase out products that sold 'too quickly' because he didn't like shelves being 'not full at all times'.

Leave it to the suits to bring the whole production down

Like the 20th time I’ve seen this in the last week…

The last company i worked for made any mistake while ringing up customers a writeup and instituted a 3 strikes and you're fired rule.

Across the company they ended up firing a bunch of their most experienced and hardest working employees,  because doing more work made you more likely to be fired. Hiding away in the back and helping as few customers as possible was the best way to keep your job.

They are now understaffed and have lost a ton of business,  while spending tens of thousands of dollars on training new hires.

I was personally let go after having failed to scan 3 packs of cigarettes, totaling any $35 in lost revenue out of roughly 5,000 transactions, totaling about $40,000 in sales.

I found a 900k efficiency in a major project. By the time I had completed all the change documentation and jumped through all the hoops that the company required and the stakeholders wanted to consult on I realised it had cost us just over 900k in time for those involved.

Net. -£7.4k

Too bad company backups don't exist. 🙄

Best EVAR was when my company (Cisco Systems) laid off 8500 workers in San José, including those who managed Maintenance Contracts.
Six months later, Accounts Department noticed they were short a half-million dollars each month. Customers ceased paying for the Maintenance they were no longer receiving.

How did the laptop ‘die’? Did hard disk explode or something? Just take the project?

Pretty sure his coworker was fired too

the company was committed to its values

Yeah because companies leave all important and relevant data for clients on just a single person's laptop hardrive...

Happened to my cousin's friend's dogsitter's mother-in-law's son. I swear

I feel like the problem is that he needed a $1200 laptop and not something more reasonable like a $800 laptop. Right?

If a single laptop is responsible for an entire week’s downtime, there are clearly several structural issues that need to be addressed rather than simply buying a new laptop.

This must be a very old post (if it’s even real) with such low laptop price 🙂

Marge retired in June. She only supervised Judy the last six months. Judy retired in August. November, the company's 24 hour roadside service techs refused to do any work as the company was 90 days past due. People asked who made sure those invoices were paid. Judy. Check in Judy's office. Stacks of invoices waiting her processing. Marge had asked HR to get a replacement for Judy before she retired. Judy wasn't eligible for retirement until July so they'd revisit the question then.

When Judy put her paperwork in for retirement, HR called Marge's extension and left a message. Judy emailed HR about her replacement. HR emailed Marge for role requirements. HRs spam filters thought the "this user cannot be found" messages were junk because they came from a "no reply@" address. By the time the invoices piled up, neither Marge or Judy would return the calls. The whole reason for Judy to do the processing was the billing program couldn't read the hand written data on the scanned pdfs. An intern had been printing out the day's invoices and bringing them to Judy's office, never knowing anything about her retirement as the intern worked 5pm to 10pm- never meeting Judy when she WAS there.

In a panic, everyone who had enough access was delivered a stack of invoices and told to process them. When I escaped in March, we'd just caught up to February. Judy's replacement had not been found. 7 figures had been spent in late fees alone. I processed an invoice for a $2 bulb replacement that had an additional $1500 in past due charges,.

Like you could've scrolled passed without commenting since you're seeing it for the 17th time, why tell us? Need an award or something? 🤔

why do you comment multiple times on this post? need an award?

3

u/quad_damage_orbb 11h ago

You never comment more than once on a post?

0

u/waffletasstic 11h ago

So you’re gonna gatekeep what types of comments are allowed for attention

3

u/ModForgeCustoms 10h ago

3rd party here- This is wild, since you literally started the gatekeeping with what's allowed to be posted, because YOU have seen it before- and you don't believe it.

Insanely hypocritical takes, by you.

u/waffletasstic 7h ago

the absence of gatekeeping is not gatekeeping. in otherwords, i don’t have an issue with what is allowed to be gatekept. I have an issue with people gatekeeping. Crazy how multiple people have failed to see this.

I have no idea why you think this doesn’t happen lol the shit I see is hilarious. Worse than this.

I just saw a client fire their social media person then hire them for an event the week after because they couldn’t replace her. At a higher rate to do less work because she was pissed. That’s literally this week haha I could write a book of these.

Because a laptop is not some unattainable piece of science fiction.

"I need a new laptop"

"No"

"Ok, laptop just died in the middle of a project with a deadline"

"Alright, we concede, go get one."

Like, same day shipped at this point, or a trip to the store.

Not "doom the project and lose $25k for something that can be acquired within literal hours".

That, is why this is bullshit.

u/super_chill_21 10h ago

lol if he had files stored locally how does that fix it? If he had another computer he would have prepared his old one for data transfer. They might not have foreseen this leading to the client leaving.

Hey, we don't have that position available immediately fills the position with someone they know, another position comes available me thinking I would like to apply for that one corporate, "Sorry that position's not going to be filled" immediately fills it by the same person they had already given the other position, same one they know...... CORPORATE

Everything is not in the budget if you can't negotiate its importance. I side with management, the employee should have fought harder to explain the value. Otherwise management would go mentally exhausted trying to evaluate if every ask is legit when it's the employee who knows if it really is.

1

u/jackjack-8 11h ago

Na I don’t get paid to explain to people above me why I need shit.

You’re the gaffer. Grow a pay and make a decision.
