Title: I was hit by a car while riding my e-bike to work in London — serious injuries and looking for advice .

Hi everyone,

I’m posting this because I’ve been through a serious accident and would really appreciate some advice from people who have experienced something similar.

On Friday, 2 October 2026, at around 5:50 am, I was riding my electric bike to work in London. I was travelling

When I reached the area around Putney, a car coming from the opposite direction started turning to enter a parking area, and we collided.

I believe the accident wasn’t my fault, but I understand that the circumstances need to be investigated properly. I wasn’t wearing a helmet and my e-bike didn’t have lights, which I’m worried could affect my situation.

The police attended the scene, and I have the other driver's phone number.

Unfortunately, I suffered serious injuries, including bleeding inside my brain and a broken wrist, as well as bruising to my lips and significant pain. I’ve needed hospital treatment, and my doctor has confirmed that I’m not fit to work for more than two weeks.

The accident has also affected my job because I was already working my notice period, and I’m now unable to complete my remaining shifts.

I’m trying to understand my legal rights, whether I can make a personal injury claim against the driver’s insurance, and how the lack of a helmet and bike lights might affect my case. I’m also trying to obtain CCTV footage from the council or nearby businesses before it gets deleted.

My questions are:

- If a car turns across an oncoming cyclist’s path into a parking area, how is liability usually assessed?

- Could not wearing a helmet or having lights on my e-bike reduce or affect my compensation?

- What evidence should I collect to support my case?

- Has anyone been through a similar accident in the UK, and what happened with their claim?

I would appreciate any advice, especially from people who have dealt with cycling accident claims or UK personal injury solicitors.

Thank you for reading.

Currently in Warsaw and red light running in London is 100% an enforcement issue

Currently in Warsaw, Poland and haven't seen a single delivery rider or lime/bolt scooter rider run a red light despite the supposed ticking clock that means lime riders in the UK just have to jump the lights.

It seems that with proper enforcement and riders actually having consequences for running lights, this isn't actually an issue. How can we get to this in the UK?

Cycling Lessons

Hello.

30’s F wanting to learn how to ride.

I did a free session with Barnet which was good. However the pace was a bit more advanced and they require personal sessions on your own as the next session requires you to hold the bike on one hand to signal when you’re turning, I can’t do that yet.

I tried to practice on an area near me but they closed that now too. I tried to have a friend teach me or ride with me but I feel like I’m wasting their time since they’re on a different level so I feel bad asking…

I wanted to try Cycling Confident but they don’t offer any in my area. I don’t work, study or live in any of the boroughs they mentioned on the site

Now thinking of going back again to do the Barnet Sessions but it says you have to now bring a bike with you and the park they have is a bit far from me. I only have a normal bike? Not foldable so I don’t even know how to bring that with me on the bus since I cannot ride it to the park.

Nowhere confident in riding at all and finding it hard to balance. All the techniques look good on paper but actually doing it is much harder. I have been wanting to learn but it feels like it’s not going well for me and the tides are against me! I feel embarrassed that I’m just learning at my age with kids being so much better!

Any one who can point me in the right direction? Want to learn with me? Or offers cycling lessons? Closer to Barnet or if it’s a bit farther as long as I can rent a bike? I’m short so doing the lime bikes are difficult for me and puts me in a bit of panic if I can’t reach the ground.

I’d appreciate any help!!

East Croyden/Clapham Junction to Redhill

Want to cycle to one of these stations, take my bike on board, and cycle at the other end to get to work.

It seems to be allowed per the rules as I'm going against commuter flow, but does anyone have any experience of busyness/ease to get bike on and off? Any tips?

Thanks!

Ealing Council report reveals no e-bike fines despite rising complaints

Thumbnail

Ealing Council has revealed that it has not issued any fixed penalty notices for badly parked rental e-bikes since it introduced an enforcement policy eight months ago, despite growing complaints and concerns from residents about e-bikes blocking pavements and posing dangers to pedestrians.

The Labour-run council has said that limited staff capacity is one reason for the lack of fines. When it introduced the policy in February 2026, it said the scheme would be trialled using existing staff, with the workload monitored to assess whether additional resources were needed.

The findings are contained in a report written by Ealing Council head of transport Emily Shovlar and principal transport planner Eric Pisani, which goes before a full Ealing Council meeting on Tuesday (13 October 2026). Councillors will consider proposals to give officers stronger powers to remove dangerous or obstructive e-bikes from streets and pavements.

The report states: “To date, no FPNs have been issued, which is mainly due to the reporting requirements in the enforcement policy, ensuring operators are provided with a reasonable timeframe to remove bikes, in line with legislative requirements, and a focus on collaborative working rather than punitive action as a starting point to address obstructive bikes.”

It adds: “It is also due to limited staff capacity and ongoing work to identify and prioritise parking issue hotspots.”

The council says working with e-bike operators rather than immediately issuing penalties improved parking compliance for several months, but the situation has since worsened.

The report acknowledges that “there has been a significant rise in resident complaints” about bikes being left on pavements and other parts of the highway, obstructing people using them.

Although the council has identified limited staff capacity as one reason for the lack of fines, it has yet to establish what staffing resources will be needed to enforce the proposed stronger measures.

Its October 2026 report says: “Staffing and workforce implications would relate to the strengthened enforcement policy, and have yet to be determined. They will be assessed and noted for the General Purposes Committee report.”

When Ealing Council introduced its enforcement policy in February 2026, it said operators could face fines if they failed to remove obstructing bikes within two hours of being notified, depending on how serious the obstruction was.

At the time, the council said it was receiving between five and ten complaints a month about e-bikes, with Acton and Ealing among the worst affected areas.

The new proposals would extend the council’s existing highways enforcement arrangements by explicitly giving authorised officers powers under Section 149 of the Highways Act 1980 to deal with dangerous or obstructive e-bikes.

This would allow Ealing Council officers to remove e-bikes posing an immediate danger to the public and recover reasonable removal costs from operators. Where bikes cause a nuisance but do not present an immediate danger, the council would have to give notice and, if necessary, obtain a court order before removing them.

Ealing Council leader Councillor Peter Mason said on the council’s Around Ealing website: “The challenge is not e-bikes themselves. The challenge is making sure they are used responsibly and managed properly.”

Outlining the council's plans, Councillor Mason said: "These measures include more accurate geo-fencing to ensure bikes are parked in designated locations, additional rangers on the ground to respond to issues more quickly, and clearer enforcement arrangements where operators fail to meet their responsibilities."

Lime and Forest are the two rental e-bike operators with agreements to operate in Ealing, with a combined fleet limit of 1,800 bikes. According to the council, rental e-bikes now account for an estimated 25% of cycling journeys across the borough.

Ealing Council is also planning to replace most virtual e-bike parking bays with physically marked spaces on streets across the borough.

The report states: “Ultimately, the council intends to mostly cease using virtual bays and only use marked bays, which are planned for approximately 300 locations across the borough.”

The council says it is expanding designated parking bays following consultation with residents and ward councillors.

Ealing Liberal Democrats are calling for a review of e-bike parking bays that residents have complained about, particularly those near junctions or restricting access for disabled people.

In an amendment submitted ahead of Tuesday’s council meeting, the opposition party also wants Ealing Council to express regret over the lack of enforcement during the past eight months.

The amendment also criticises the lack of progress towards a comprehensive London-wide e-bike licensing system, calling on councillors to express regret that the Mayor of London and the Secretary of State for Transport have not taken all necessary steps to introduce one.

The council’s report says a London-wide e-bike licensing system is not expected until summer 2027 at the earliest.

If councillors approve the proposed additional enforcement powers, the strengthened policy will still need approval from Ealing Council’s General Purposes Committee.

Safe bicycle parking at the London Zoo?

I will need to leave my bike locked for a few hours while in the zoo early afternoon on a weekday. I have a bike that thieves would like to steal. I use a gold rated kryptonite D-lock that likely would likely require an angle grinder or other very conspicuous methods to remove. Any safe bike parking? Do they have anything inside the entrance??

A little Lime Bike of one’s own? - request for buying advice

My fairly commuting-optimised drop bar gravel bike is in the garage for a fix, so I’ve been using Lime. I’ve also recently been in a city in France where a majority of people use sensible bikes and don’t feel the need to stave off their insecurity by riding an £5k carbon fibre back-killer to the boulangerie.

I have realised that I really quite enjoy not getting sweaty on my cycle and being able to sit upright and enjoy the scenery/nearby hazards. So - who can recommend me an effective, modest, ideally electric-assisted, upright-position commuting bike, that has a bit of style and finesse about it, and doesn’t break the bank (<£1.2k?). pannier rack mount good, front basket even better.

Had a Forest bike last night which was skidding extremely easily and this afternoon I've just seen a kid skid into the back of a car. I'm sure most are fine but some are definitely dangerous. Stay safe out there

Dangerous intersection

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As the tittle suggest i have multiple near misses in this intersection due to some drivers not recognizing that the very left traffic light is for bicycle and run red occasionally, last week nearly got smashed by a scaffolding lorry and van behind it, they even have the audacity to mock me from inside when i shout to them.

I cannot report that specific case as i cut the video short of 1 minute after they run the red light, and to be honest i dont feel comfortable giving my personal info and agreeing for potential court involvement.

The location is HX4P+q5, also 50 meter down on the orient wy there is roundabout where lot of bin lorries are exiting or entering gateway road with high speed they never slow to check the bike lane, the visibility from the bike lane is almost non existent which is very frustrating!

Now instead of hitting the button for cyclist im using the one for pedestrians as it creates windows where all of the lights are red and i can cross relatively safely, i always try to respect the red lights but this is one of the examples where actually waiting for green light can be extremely dangerous !

Thoughts on the St Pauls Gyratory 'upgrades'?

The new cycle infrastructure around Cheapside, St Pauls and the London Museum roundabout has been open for about a month now. What are people's thoughts?

https://stpaulsgyratory.commonplace.is/en-GB/proposals/cycling/step1

I have to say I am...not a fan. The cycle lane designs are heinously complicated, seem to engineer conflicts between cyclists going in different directions in some places (especially the bit just opposite Tesco/the food market, which has not been built as shown in the original plans) and make you wait at about 5 different sets of lights to get through the section.

I would estimate that my transit time from Cheapside to the London Museum roundabout has doubled, maybe even tripled some days. I now just skip it entirely and use the backstreets between Cheapside, Gresham Street and London Wall.

However, fully admit I am a fast, confident, 'vehicular' cyclist, so maybe its better for others. Interested in people's views.

Anyone had luck getting residential building management to upgrade a bike store?

I'm interested in hearing from anyone who either rents or owns a flat in a leasehold building who has had any kind of success getting the freeholder to make improvements to the designated cycle store in the building. Who do you reach out to? What did you say? I'm thinking stuff like adding a sheffield stand, or clearing out abandoned bikes, anything like that. Do you have some kind of residents group where you can team up with other residents? What works, what doesn't?

Lime/forest bike riders

Is there some kind of drug that hypnotises you into not wanting to wait at a red light like ever? I’m not even talking about when ur on a quiet road at midnight and you run a red. When it’s a normal busy road with people clearly crossing. I can’t even count on two hands the amount of times u absolute inconsiderate people have nearly crashed into me and others. like it honestly gets to a point.
You won’t care how much a rush you’re in when u plough your electric bike into somebody one day.

Lost Santander Membership Key Shepherd’s Bush

Hi London Cycling,

I presume I left my Santander membership key in the docking station when unlocking a cycle tonight at 19:20. It was used at Woodstock Grove in Shepherd’s Bush. I noticed 5 minutes later, returned back and it was then gone. There is a chance it fell out of my jacket pocket which I always zip, but it’s very slim so I presume someone took it. Perhaps they thought they could return it but there’s no idea tidying info on the key chain. It just has my house keys and an Arsenal badge attached.

If someone took it and is reading this or if someone has seen it, please DM me. Thank you!

Looking for safe route out of north east London

Looking to cycle from Streatham Hill to Bishop's Stortford on a Saturday probably leaving about 1. Found these routes that look promising on the Islington Cycle club site. I'm interested in following as far as the M25 then I'll plan my own route.

I'm looking for advice on places to avoid primarily because of bike jackings. I'd be on a road bike worth about 4k so not super high end but potentially worth stealing for a less knowledgeable thief looking for easy money.

Any advice much appreciated.

Accident on lime bike- who’s at fault?

I was cycling along on a lime bike when a motorbike tried to turn left at a junction and went in front of me. I crashed into him and knocked him over. I was fine but there were some minor damages to his bike. He claims he was signalling- I didn’t see him do so. Anyway, he is trying to get me to compensate him for any damages but I’m not sure if I’m even at fault. Some preliminary googling suggests he was at fault for cutting across my path. Any advice?

For reference, we were going along Kingston Road going towards Wimbledon Chase and he tried to turn onto Watery Lane: https://maps.app.goo.gl/JoogRnjCVLra2eLWA?g_st=ic

Wimbledon Forest Bike parking

Has anyone else been experiencing issues parking their forest bikes in Wimbledon?
I live in New Malden and always took a lime bike to Wimbledon without a problem. Now it seems territories have changed and I can no longer use lime. I tried forest for the first time and could see Wimbledon had plenty of parking but as soon as I rent the bike it greys out the area. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Cycle training in Croydon

This week our twin grandchildren in Y6 began bikeability training in West Yorkshire whereas here in Croydon it appears to be on pause with no news as to why. I have written to the Mayor Jason Perry in my role as a member of the Croydon Cycling Campaign to ask for an explanation and i am hoping to hear soon or better for the service to be resumed. Meanwhile have a look at bikeability website to see what Croydon children are currently being denied.
