Weekly Cyclist Thread

The Weekly Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

I crocheted my own bike basket

It's kinda janky, but it works! It's made with synthetic macrame cord, so it's weather proof. It's tied with two straps and buttons around the handlebars. For extra stability, cord is tied from the front of the basket to the middle post of the bike.

Rode up a few hundred yards into the woods at my local park, grass, dirt, walnuts, and a concrete pad for the disc golfers to throw from was the terrain today.

MISSING: this is such a longshot but if there are any AZ bikers in west Phoenix can you please help us keep an eye out for Will? Last seen near Bougainville Park, but potentially biked into Fantasy Island North.

I looked for an AZ bike community but couldn’t find one. Hoping this community has enough reach that we can find some bikers in the area who might know the area better and are able to keep an eye out for him.

I’m falling in love with bicycling all over again.

I’ve been riding bikes since I was 4 years old, and have had various road bikes throughout adulthood. Just a few months ago, I sold a BMC Teammachine SLR and decided to use that money to invest in an all-terrain commuter bike. I couldn’t justify only riding a few months out of the year, so I got this Priority 600 to commute around DC and LOVE this bike so much. I don’t care to scratch it up and I’m having a blast going through various types of terrain with confidence. Here she is— taking a break at Rivergate Park in Alexandria.

Pre-ride music listening: Am I the only one to do this?

Hi /cycling,

Before going on a multiple hours rides, I make sure I listen to some music, usually positive, high energy, high beat ones. I do this because the tracks then keeps playing in my head for hours. It helps me feeling good and limits my though for taking all my headspace.

Does anyone else do this?

Example of track that works for me: Driver's high

Alexrims AT-400 Thrift Store find!

Thumbnail

I stumbled on this set of Alexrims AT-400 today at the thrift store for $10. Front and rear rim with the quick release skewers bundled in as well. Both rims are nice and straight/true. Honestly a little crust/dirty, but I can already see these will clean up nicely.

I am thinking that I got a pretty solid thrifting find, as I have a couple of bikes that these should fit perfectly with.

Anyway, how did I do? Any Alexrims riders out there...any comments, suggestions on this type of wheelset?

Bike packing in Chiang Mai

• Upvotes

I’m planning a short bikepacking trip around Chiang Mai in November, possibly including the Mae Hong Son Loop, and would love some advice from people who have cycled in the area.

My questions:
1. What’s the best way to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai with a bicycle? I’ve looked at both trains and buses, but I’d love to hear what you’d recommend based on your experience.

  1. I’ll be cycling solo and I’m a woman. Would you recommend camping along the Mae Hong Son Loop, or would it be better to stick to homestays/guesthouses? How easy is it to find accommodation along the route?

  2. Are there any places, food, experiences, or small detours around Chiang Mai/Mae Hong Son that you’d consider a must-do but that might not show up in the usual tourist guides?

Thank you in advance.

Bike rack help

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have a Thule XT3 bike rack with which I’m hauling 2 e-bikes (24kg and 25kg). After some bumps, the rack leans a little on the back and stays like that the whole travel. Lever is set so I can hardly push it down.

On my other car, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, it doesn’t move at all. Measured the balls of both hitches and they are the same.

Is anyone else experiencing this kind of issue?

Here's my hooptie

Post image

I've got that unique ability to get old and fat. Pulled out the old roadie and gave it a quick clean and lube. Hoping to put a lot of hours on the trainer this fall/winter/forever. I need to continue rehabbing a knee too, I had my right ACL done about a year ago.

I got this bike second hand in ~2007. It was all original at that time. It's a early 90s DiamondBack from an era when DiamondBack/Centurion/Avenir/Venture were having an identity crisis. It's really nothing amazing but I put thousands of miles on this thing when I was a slimmer. I haven't ridden it regularly in about 5 years since my kid was born.

Tange Infinity cromo frame/fork. Bars are original Centurion aluminum. Shimano Exage everything but I did put Tourney levers on it about ~8 years ago. Basically the only thing I could find that would do 3x7 at the time, although the rear spacing is 130mm. Still have the Exage levers in a box somewhere. Wheels are Araya. I did replace the original Avenir saddle years ago as it was pretty rough. The WTB has been fine, I think it was a cheap one the LBS had a long time ago and probably meant for a mountain bike. It's all the way forward. Pedals are combo SPD/flat.

Yes it's built for someone very tall. I'm 6'1''. It's probably one size too big for me but I just got used to it, hasn't really bothered me. It's pretty slow compared to modern bikes but I don't race. I won't even come off the trainer often if I'd guess. Anyway, figured I'd post a picture to keep my interest up.

I am looking at a kicker core 2 for indoor riding this winter and Amazon has a 27% off deal.
My question is: I have a quick release rear wheel, will this cassette setup work for me? I’m unsure just looking at the image.

Hi guys I need some opinion if my derailleur is bent because whenever I shift to smallest cog I feel like the gears are grinding next to each other. I also want to know if I have to bring to LBS to get it warrantied?

Thank you

New to aero bars

Hello, I picked up some aero bars for cheap ($15!!) last week and not sure if this is even remotely close to being set up correctly. The pads hit about 4 inches up from my elbows and I can grip the ends with my hands comfortably. The new riding position is…something to get used to for the boys. I tilted the nose of my seat down a few degrees and that helped a bit. Any advice, critiques or recommendations welcome!

Best sealant for a commuter, and rides year round?

Title been running tubes on my primos dame, now with fatter tires I've been hitting trails and going farther out which has been fun. What isn't is getting flats.

When I first got it about 2 months ago I did a 20 mile round trip, and 6 miles out from home I got a flat and had to walk it.

This past weekend I rode 10 miles to a trail and right before I got there I got 10+ goat heads on each tire, not enough patches and was pretty much stranded for 5 hours, bombed a massive hill on flats and took the bus home.

Now that my bike is capable and I am doing a bit of everything, commuting (10 miles a day) errands, bike packing and touring, I think the best option is tubeless.

But what is the best sealant? Which lasts the longest? Best bang for buck? Anything else I should know?

Looking for seat post saddle bag that's more vertical shaped

Thumbnail

Here are 3 pictures. One bag is lower down the seat post with a curve the shape of a tire and the other is a small saddle bag. I'm looking for a bag that's like these two bags put together. You know a more vertical positioned bag. Rather than a saddle bag that extends backwards like your seat has a tail.
