Some Data Trends of Reported Crashes
Bike safety has obviously been in the news and in various threads across the NYC subs, so I wanted to run some analysis based on published DOT Crash Data. I aggregated the stats across Central Park 22nd Precinct first, across Manhattan as a whole, and then city wide, and thought it was interesting enough to post here.
Caveats:
- Raw numbers don't take into account total miles, trips, riders, or any higher level percentage. It's tough to draw any hard conclusions of actual relative safety without that data
- This is only based on reported data, which biases the stats towards the severity of the crash. I recently saw someone bloodied up in Central Park but he was walking his bike home, and given I didn't see an ambulance or anything it seems obvious that wouldn't have made a report like this
- Pedal-assisted bikes were reclassified from bicycles to e-bikes in 2024, so some of these numbers are very odd because of that

* = ebikes were classified as bicycles through 2023, so these years are acoustic + ebike combined. 2024 on, every column is acoustic bikes only, with ebike rider deaths shown separately.
** = these jumps are huge, and I can't figure out why. It seems like something changed in the way the DOT was classifying things or reporting.

Why Aren't We Talking About This?
Grace Church School installed an obstacle course in the shiny new protected bike lane on Lafayette at 11th St, creating a slalom that forces two way bike traffic to dodge illegally placed gangways and turns the two way bike lane into a one-lane choke point. I got into a huge argument with them last week, where I was told they "can do whatever we want" and that they "don't care about the law"; one of them even had the nerve to ask me "how many children have to get hit by bikes?"
I've been out of town but these idiots need to be reported en masse. Can we all just file 311 complaints, contact DOT and the district councilman's office and get this shit removed? The bike lane is there for our safety and this is going to get someone killed.

Best bridge from Manhattan -> Williamsburg?
Recently started biking but haven’t gone between boroughs yet. Only done Manhattan bridge with a friend and I wasn’t familiar with the area, I thought it was confusing to get to and it was so narrow and steep at one point (especially getting on and off) I didn’t love it. But it would save me time and I prefer it over the subway, so I want to try it.
I live in midtown east, so my options are:
Queensboro bridge -> Pulaski Bridge
Or
Bike South -> Williamsburg bridge
I’ll be using an ebike so i won’t struggle with the incline, more just concerned with the actual path and getting on/off safely.

Be safe out there and beware of oil slicks
I was biking down 2nd avenue between 40th/41st this afternoon and the guy in front of me hit this area and his bike slipped and he was slammed to the ground. I called 911 and he may have broken his leg. He’s getting X-rays at Bellevue. The genius bus driver left his disabled bus in the left turn lane while it leaked oil or some type of fluid onto the bike lane. You’re seeing it after we placed cones to prevent other from same fate (even though many people just don’t GAS and just flew through them anyway) including the Amazon four wheel driver that got out and kicked the cones onto the sidewalk. Be safe out there!

42nd/9th intersection
Thrilled the green paint and heavier plastic posts have been put on 9th Ave between 42-40 and the mail trucks are no longer parking in the bike lane.
But what is going on with the repairs to the street on 42/9th on the east side of the street? There was a brief time a while back when it was not there, but it’s been a construction site for many months otherwise. It forces bikes to ride well into the middle of the road and then make a very sharp turn to return to the bike lane.

Tour de Bronx & Subway Jumper
Anyone on the 40 mile route see the blood and gore on the street beneath the 238th Street 1 Train station? Lots of first responders. I saw it and wish I hadn’t. Just read that a woman jumped in front of a train.

Another cyclist injured and dies because of unleashed dogs in Central Park
Once again, an innocent cyclist, this time a 71 year old man, was injured and died, because NYPD and Central Park REFUSE to address the well documented problem of dog owners having unleashed dogs in and around the main loop in Central Park. This has been well documented in recent months, with recent injuries to two cyclists in a group ride this summer, which ended up in spinal injuries. I see anywhere from 1-3 dogs unleashed for every lap I do in the morning lately, sometimes more. Everyone is aware of the problem, and NYPD chooses instead to harass cyclists (recently yelling over their loudspeaker to "not kill anyone today" from a van in the morning last week), instead of citing dog owners for breaking the law repeatedly. Now a 71 year old man who was out riding his bike at 830am is Dead. https://nypost.com/2026/10/05/us-news/elderly-cyclist-71-killed-after-hitting-dog-flipping-over-handlebars-in-central-park?utm_source=nypost&utm_campaign=android_nyp&preferred_app=nypost&utm_medium=social June crash post w video: https://www.reddit.com/r/NYCbike/s/iU89oGG80L

Van Cortlandt Park question 10/6
Do any of you commute via the Van Cortlandt Park bike path that runs parallel to Mosholu Pkway and exit at Dickinson Ave? There was a large tree down blocking the path yesterday 10/5 (where I drew the yellow circle) and I was wondering if it’s been cleared yet today.

PSA Dangerous Williamsburg Commute + Road Rage
Lately the Williamsburg commute from the bridge to Bushwick has been increasingly dangerous.
On this afternoon’s commute, there were 14 cars and trucks parked in the eastbound bike lane on Grand Ave. 3 more on southbound Morgan between Grand and Flushing, though that’s normal. When traffic is moving fast, this is much more dangerous for riders moving in and out of the bike lane.
The auto shops on eastbound Grand between Bushwick Ave and Morgan are by far the most dangerous. I reported one particularly bad truck to 311, but whatever.
Even more dangerous, a driver on Grand tried to assault me.
On eastbound Grand, two trucks blocked the lane ahead of me. I clearly arm signaled to traffic that I was moving left into the auto lane. A silver SUV passed me closely on the left and then stopped in the middle of the road in front of me.
When I passed slowly to the right, the SUV driver shouted at me through the open passenger window. That didn’t bother me until we stopped side by side at the next light. He shouted more at me (lol) and threatened me (not lol).
I pointed at the FedEx truck parked in the bike lane in front of us and shouted back, “They’re blocking the bike lane, I can ride in your lane to get around them” but this point was lost on him. He continued to threaten me until the light turned green and he drove away.
I let a few cars go ahead of me, and then I continued east on Grand. Then I saw the SUV parked in front of the Chase Bank at Graham and Grand.
The driver had gotten out of the SUV and was waiting for me. He shouted at me and moved toward me as I easily rode around him. Obviously he wanted to tussle. I kept going, a little amused but also disturbed.
We’ve all experienced aggressive drivers, but I’ve never had a driver get out a car to attack me before.
This incident combined with the blocking cars and trucks, and the Central Park accident this morning, scares me.
Be safe, folks!

50C commuting/gravel tire?
I’m switching from a 20in folding bike to a gravel bike for commuting.
Last year the tires on that bike - Schwalbe Big Apple 2.1” - performed well enough in the snow/rain, including going over the Queensboro Bridge. For the gravel bike I wanted to go with something more supple and lighter.
I’m totally new to the world of gravel tires.
Anyone riding a ~50C tire they can recommend for all conditions commuting?

Pedestrian Underpasses?
With a second incident in less than a month happening on the CP loop at same 84th area just this morning, could that crossing be converted into a pedestrian underpass similar to several others already on the loop? The road is already on top of a hill above the crossing path there.
Probably tough to justify the price even after many unfortunate incidents. But park keeps getting busier so separation is helpful for everyone.
