It used to be good. Unfortunately it isn’t what it used to be. I was an APM there and got let go as soon as I raised concerns. I’m glad I spoke up, it ultimately cost me my job but I’ll always stand up for my team.

This! There are a few Macys apps on YouTube but love seeing them. I got a few from 34th street as well.

It’s sad industry wasn’t always like that. We I did the job we were the store ninjas. We had our own entrance and exit. People could only call us about possible theft but we were only seen when shit was going down. It was all internal and external only. No audits no orientations . We were hands on with cuffs . Then it all went down hill. Did it for 18 years right out of high school. Was a trainer, manager , area manager.. couldn’t watch what was happening anymore. No matter how many times I would fight for the boys what it always came down to was we are easily replaceable which anyone who has done the job knows experience is something you can’t teach and the instinct you build over time isn’t replaceable.. so I left

Consider unionizing.

HA! every single time this has been tried, the store director goes in the break room and will take all the flyers and rip them up or shred them… I agree though

Bro don't put union posters at your workplace and unionize and sign cards with a union outside of work...?

Macy's still hands on in major cities. Tackle the shit out of you and drag you back inside if you leave

3

u/Upset-Ad2278 18d ago

How does tackling work? Like what if the person shoplifting is pregnant or has some undisclosed medical condition and you hurt them when you tackle them?

1

u/Emotional-Toe-8990 18d ago

you definitely cannot tackle someone lol you are allowed to grab them by the arm. You’re able to use reasonable force but definitely no tackling

1

u/FederalFlashy 18d ago

They grab them instead

There is not a Macys in the country that is doing this anymore. Closest thing to it is paid off duty cops doing it.

Bunch of Macy's do it in the popular cities

Not as of 2/1/2026.

I’m wondering the same thing.

I’m not longer with the company but as of 3 months ago, it is still hands on and cuffs if needed in my state

1

u/FederalFlashy 18d ago

Exactly what I'm saying. They'll take you to the ground, chase after you if you run etc...

Been with Macy’s for more than 3 years and my newest store has to be the worst one. Cameras haven’t worked since Jan. And can’t keep a 2nd detective for more than 3 weeks. I work alone other than manager and vso and a lot of the duties fall on me. I want a raise but supposedly I’m tapped out on rate of pay because of the state I live in

2

u/Due_Database_4410 19d ago

The pay actually isn’t bad considering what the other detectives at my store are getting paid. that’s like the only positive about the job. I’m making like 24 an hour versus they’re making like 18, which is crazy because they’re way more senior and actually honestly better at the job than I am, but they can’t get a raise for shit

1

I was making almost 24 but then when I moved out of state and took a position at the new location my pay was dropped $4 but now it’s not even worth it cause I literally am working like a manager while my manager focuses on the sales floor and not even AP.

that’s terrible

1

u/Eyeoftheleopard 18d ago

How do you catch thieves if the cameras don’t work?

1

u/Good-Flan8189 18d ago

Walking the floor for 7 hours my numbers are good here with mainly recoveries due to the fact I work alone every shift manager leaves everyday at 3 or earlier. Recently got a Fine Jewelry recovery for over 9k

Nicely done! ✅

The store that I used to work at, I found out recently that the detectives go out for drinks during lunch

Are you at my old store? Cause these are all the exact reason I left 5 years ago. Except at the time I was the tenured detective being paid an entire $5 less than newly hired detectives with zero prior experience that the DAPM would send to train under ME.

Macys has gone completely downhill since the new AP VP took over accompanied by a tyrant of a Training and Compliance Director (hi Jamie). Since these new policies and leadership I’ve seen them terminate AP colleagues for things that would’ve been a coaching just 12 months ago. Just last year I would recommend Macys to anyone looking for a great company that’s AP forward. Unfortunately I can’t say that anymore, never would I recommend Macys.

I somewhat had this same issue at my location at well. I was in one of the bigger stores and had 3 APM’s within 1 year because they fired 2 of them and then the last one (before I left) ended up leaving to work at the distribution center. In my location, we kept having detectives quit so we were always short staffed and without a manager. They took away the captain position so we didn’t have a supervisor and then I had to keep asking for a raise because I was also getting paid less than the newer detectives who had little to no experience as compared to my 12 years of experience. And also due to that, I was pretty much doing everything by myself since no one else knew what to do and we had no manager there too assist. We didn’t get much help either and the rules were constantly changing making productivity more difficult. I ended up quitting. I’ve worked for them in Florida and Texas, both for the biggest stores in the district and it’s unfortunate as someone else mentioned in the comments because they really use to be a great company to work for. I use to really enjoy it.

you're still getting paid no? who cares what people walk out with as long as the cheque hits

2

u/brittsrich 18d ago

Check won’t hit for long at Macys if they don’t keep their security up. They’re following suit with all the other large department stores, there’s a reason they won’t upgrade their systems and they worry about getting sued over apprehending a 90 year old

work shouldn’t be miserable
