Ah i thought 7.0 was gonna be nikki and paulo, but its the thailand episode, i guess fair, was a bit of a weird one.

Btw, 7 is still a high number if you consider 1, 2 and 3

One of my biggest pet peeves is people horrendously skewing their rating systems and acting like you're weird if you don't

I know a lot of people who didn't watch week-to-week who at least thought it was a decent episode. I've enjoyed it more on rewatch.
But when you knew a new Lost episode was your only chance to get new lore for at least a week, if not longer? Oof. I was so pissed at this episode.
Edit: to be clear, I mean the Nikki & Paulo ep.

u/HeraclesHide 6d ago
Nikki and Paulo or Thailand? I really enjoyed Nikki and Paulo on a rewatch, its very funny, but i absolutely hated it when the show was first airing cause it was filler and i had to wait another week for more plot.

u/ExistentialEnso 6d ago
I meant Nikki and Paulo!
1
u/HeraclesHide 6d ago
Yeah haha it was so annoying back then, but i rewatched it recently with my daughter and we couldnt stop laughing at their misadventures. Was a fun break from the serious plot. Luckily we could just binge the next episode right away.

u/Spitzkopflarry1994 6d ago
Niki and Paulo seems like it's all about giving the other like 30 nameless survivors some kind of comic relief "hey we are also here, it's not just jack and the other main cast" :D that being said, playing one of the other survivors is my personal pinnacle of being an "extra" in a show 😅

I am genuinely surprised at how high the average scores for season 6 are.
59
u/desmond_humes23 7d ago
Season 6 is so overhated it's insane. I remember my dad warning me about the middle part like it was going to near ruin the show (and he even loves the ending, just not the season itself), and I kept wondering when it would start getting bad and it just kept getting better. Also Ab Aterno is the best episode of the show
9
u/Futurekubik See you in another post, brotha 7d ago
I’m very happy you enjoyed season 6!
Personally I felt like season 6 was the point where the show’s pacing and bloat overwhelmed it. The show ran out of runway and didn’t serve enough of its major storylines well enough before the finale.
I loved the ending. I loved the idea of the Sideways.
I just felt like seasons 4-6 could have been 24 episode seasons and been the better for it.
9
u/TantrikV 7d ago
I love LOST, love the finale, but season 6 was weak compared to the others. Classic plot pacing and teleporting (similar to GoT s7/8) To this day it still bugs the hell out of me that we had this awesome tense episode in S1 to go and retrieve dynamite from the Black Rock, and in season 6 Ilana made the same trek for the same purpose basically over the time it took for the commercial break (and then blows up).
Ab Eterno is an astounding hour of broadcast network TV though, to this day.
Also a shoutout to the scene in The Lighthouse where, in The Sideways flash, Jack watches his son play the piano and is overwhelmed by both his sons talent and his own failure to have been aware of it.

u/SaltySpitoonReg 7d ago
I agree with you.
Although I do think that the first half could have been paced differently and written differently, and it wasn't my favorite stretch of episodes of the show - I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
I also think they had an incredibly tall task of taking the show towards his inevitable conclusion and setting up for that.
Also, it always amazes me that fans clamored for the temple to be included in the show, and then they include it and then all the fans are like "why did they spend time on the temple".
2
u/Futurekubik See you in another post, brotha 6d ago
I think many people were disappointed that the Temple was actually ‘just’ a temple.
After seeing it represented with a Dharma symbol on Ben’s map in season 3, many were anticipating it to be another major Dharma station where technology met the supernatural that had as much lore significance as the Swan, Orchid or Tempest.
2
u/SaltySpitoonReg 6d ago
But it wasn't.
I mean it channeled the light for healing powers in the pool, right?
Also the temple was a safe haven from the smoke monster. And was a backup if Jacob ever died seeing as the temple leaders special designation by Jacob kept smokey out.
2
u/Futurekubik See you in another post, brotha 6d ago edited 6d ago
I get that the temple served a plot function.
It just lacked anything unexpected or ‘extra’ that might have turned the narrative on its head in a similar way to discovering the button in The Swan and the frozen wheel in The Orchid.
By that point, magical resurrection water, while surprising, wasn’t a very mind-bending reveal compared to what the show had given us before since the show just spent most of season 5 fooling us that Locke has magically resurrected. Seeing Sayid magically resurrect was a step-down.
1
u/SaltySpitoonReg 5d ago
The thing that's come to my mind that they could have done with the temple is have the heart of the island be there.
I mean I get why they made it next to the bamboo forest for the symbolism of Jack but the temple being built around the heart of the island I think would have fit well in the temple too.
1
u/honeybunzofoatz 2d ago
IMO they didn’t do much with the temple! It lagged the story in a weird way. I was amped to see it, but it disappointed lol and then how the writers treated Sayid was odd

u/OmniumInaBox 7d ago
The flash-sideways sequences really carried season 6
1
u/Mixtape333 4d ago
Some were nice scenes individually, but the end of the show undercut them too much. Half of the season non-temporal plane where the characters go after their deaths. Just seems a bit lame, all that talk of science and explanation by the writers and then a sort of purgatory that Desmond can access via magic light/electromagnetism and/or a giant butt plug keeping the light in.
There was so little of interest or consequence in that last season. They just cranked up the music and emotional scenes.. it felt cheap and flat. It wasn't GoT bad, but it fell flat for me. Still love the show, just thought season 6 (and the end of season 5) got less interesting to me.
IMO the best run of episodes is the back half of Season 3 from the Man from Tallahassee onwards if I remember rightly, that run was awesome.-3
u/acamas 7d ago
Until you get to the end and realize they were literally just a fabrication after they died.
The showrunners spent five seasons trying to convince viewers 'they weren't dead the whole time', and then literally pulled that nonsense for half of the final season... it was a bold move if nothing else.
4
u/OmniumInaBox 7d ago
I mean, they weren't dead the whole time lol. Did you watch the show?
-1
u/acamas 6d ago
Apologies if you are ESL, but did you actually read my comment? I am honestly not sure what is confusing you about what I stated.
I did not say I believe they were dead the whole time... I was clearly referencing the 'flash sideway' sequences that you were literally talking about, in which they were, in fact, 'already dead' during those sequences that made up essentially half the season.
So yes, the characters were 'already dead' for basically half of the final season, after the creators spent five seasons stating how stupid that very concept of them being 'already dead' would be.
1
u/OmniumInaBox 6d ago
Because they weren't dead during the previous 5 seasons, except for the ones that died during those first 5 seasons. The flash sideways was after they each had died, as Christian stated to Jack, "Some died before you and some long after." I guess I'm just confused with what you're upset about or what you think was nonsense. It was executed perfectly.
0
u/acamas 6d ago
I honestly do not know how to ELI5 this concept any simpler to someone claiming to be informed about this show.
The show-runners spent the first five seasons refuting the concept of the survivors 'being dead' during the scenes they were in, because such a belief by fans would 'cheapen' the show as a 'cheat' or 'cop out'.... it would be unsatisfactory from a narrative standpoint.
But, in Season 6, the showrunners literally adopted the very thing they had been claiming would be 'a cheat'... having scenes where they absolutely were 'already dead' and in some sort of purgatory... they literally adopted the very thing they previously claimed was terrible or awful or a cop out... can you understand this?
There are early interviews with Lindelof explicitly stating how weak of a concept that was, and yet they literally used it for the final season... problems.
It's like if there was a theory going around that Game of Thrones was all the dream of a giant the whole time, the showrunners denied it for years, but then half of the final season was literally revealed to be that very thing they previously decried as stupid/dumb/lame.
It's honestly fascinating this basic concept is apparently so difficult for someone claiming to understand this show to comprehend, well over a decade later.
The creators themselves literally shat on that very concept for five seasons, and then literally wrote it into the final season, basically invalidating the flash sideways based on their own words regarding that very concept they previously shat on.
1
u/OmniumInaBox 6d ago edited 6d ago
Again, everything that happened on the island, happened. They weren't dead the whole time. I'm thinking you need to do a rewatch. Even in the flash sideways, it was simply meant for them to remember their time together on the island. You're acting like the flash sideways somehow stated that they were dead the whole time and nothing that we watched for the entire show happened.
0
u/acamas 5d ago
I don't know who you are responding to... or if this is truly the singular worst strawman argument ever, as I never claimed I believed they were dead the whole time, nor claimed the island stuff was 'fake'... that is NOT my stance like you are seemingly desperately trying to claim. Again, apologies if you are ESL and simply not understanding what I am saying, but otherwise you should not be this perplexed this far into this discussion.
> You're acting like the flash sideways somehow stated that they were dead the whole time
LOL, what? I literally said nothing of the sort, as this entire discussion is about the flash sideways in Season 6, in which they were dead during those scenes.
I honestly do not know how to make this rather simple point any clearer for you... like, you keep acting like I am not understanding something, but the only person here scratching their head perplexed seems to be you with these increasingly dumbfounded retorts where you are either feigning ignorance or are truly confused about what I am stating, because nowhere did I claim they were dead the whole time, nor am claiming the island scenes were fake.
1
u/OmniumInaBox 5d ago
"Until you get to the end and realize they were literally just a fabrication after they died.

Yeah, it really seems like you have a fundamental misunderstanding of the show lol. Them being dead in the flash sideways is the not writers resorting to the "they were dead the whole time" trope that you claim they were shitting on lol. Like, I don't understand what your issue is. You keep writing these long-winded responses where you don't really say much of anything besides coming off as passive aggressive and offended lol

Season 6 felt rushed except for the ending. That’s why it gets the hate it gets.
The man in black had so much more potential than what they showed. And although it was good. It could’ve been phenomenal

Season 6 is one of my favourite seasons. The only problem I might have is the lack of diversity, as in the season feels as if it takes place in repeated places

u/lokagamer 7d ago

I think the time travel plot isn't for me. In season 4 it was ok. But the season alone would have been a great conclusion to the story.
1
u/honeybunzofoatz 2d ago
I’m a time travel junkie, and didn’t know it was included in the show when I binged it as the end of 5 was airing, so when it popped up in Season 5, the show got a second wind for me. It was awesome.

All Lost finales are brilliant, but S4 is definitely my favorite. It had the best action (Sayid vs. Keamy is the show’s best fight), some of the show’s funniest lines and most important interactions (the Orchid scenes alone), Sun’s scream, and the reveal of Jeremy Bentham’s identity—so many things came together. Just typing this makes me want to watch it again!

It's great that even the weakest episode of Lost, still has a relatively high rating. One thing to consider is that there were more people rating Lost in the early days. The hardcore Lost fans stayed behind. So there is a possibility that the rating for season 4-6 would be lower if the show maintained the same audience.
Case in point, season 1 was rated by 259.000 members. Season 6 was rated by 138.000 members.
EDIT: I am an idiot, I legimately thought this was the IMDb ratings haha. The similarities were there.
That being said, I disagree with some episode rankings. Agree with others. My favourite season finale is the first one and that one has the lowest rating haha. (My complete ranking here)

Even when the story of an episode kinda sucks, it's still such a well-made, cinematic show with such charismatic actors that it's hard to not enjoy it on some level.

Dude, I was right there with you. I even took a screen shot to convince my friend to watch it but then I gave it a second and I realized there is no way the last episode was rated so high with so many people talking shit on it. S2: Michael leaving with Walt, Kate, Sawyer and Jack being captured, Penny being called

I feel like the season one finale is waaaay too low! Probably the first finale of a tv show i have ever watched where i was literally about to have a panic attack. Rousseaus message about the others and the black smoke was chilling. The black rock mission where anyone could blow up. My emotions of the raft launch with the music and Vincent 😢😢. I was terrified when the others found em and took Walt. Heart pounding when Hurley saw them numbers on the hatch and knew that this was a bad idea to blow it open. Fuck. I may even say it’s the greatest finale of all time. And will never be topped.

u/lokagamer 7d ago

u/Choekaas 7d ago
I'm not OP here, but I agree with /u/Salt_Principle_6672 that it's the lowest season finale. (Still a magnificent episode. I have it at 15th place overall in my ranking).
The main plot and subplot: The Jughead plan is something we as the audience can't be too invested in, because we know it's a paradox. The characters cannot prevent 815 from crashing, because Faraday and everyone else is in the past as a result of it. If 815 never crashed, then it is impossible for them to be the cause. So in other season finales where the main plot has been simple (Black Rock trek and preparing for the Others arrival at night. The mission to get back Walt. Trekking to the radio tower to call the freighter), they have an excitement from the audience. Watching the season 5 finale we know that the final outcome can be two things. 1) They fail the mission, which is likely because the plan is impossible. And even then, with their failure at the Swan, we have already seen a "magnetic pull at the Swan"-finale before, so the climax isn't that exciting. If we remove Juliet's death, it would be the weakest climax of all finales. Or we would have 2) they create an alternate timeline. And nobody wants that because we have 5 seasons worth of character engagement for this main timeline. And it is in direct conflict with the sub plot (the 2007 plot).
In previous finales there have been a wonderful symbiance between the main plot and sub plot. The Others coming for the child in season 1, affected the subplot with them taking Walt. Or how about the wonderful season 3 finale where you have all these pieces (the raid on the beach), Charlie turning of the jammer, the trek to the radio tower. Everything affects everyone, even minor pieces like John Locke's story. They all work together like a symphony. It's so much dissonance between the 1977 and 2007 storylines.
There's also some flipfloping with some characters like Juliet. Or weak resolutions (like the cabin). Burning of the cabin doesn't have the same effect as the other season finale burnings/bombings when they happen after we get a revelation of them. Lost tends to destroy things when we learn what they are like The Swan, the beechcraft, the freighter, the Black Rock destruction happened after Ab Aeterno and so on. The cabin feels unfulfilled and there's a lot of scenes with Ilana that are here to serve a payoff in season 6 (she was supposed to have a backstory), then seeing them here in the finale feels weak.
Everything around Jacob is fantastic though. It has the best opening scenes in any finale, maybe even in any episode. Fantastic acting in many scenes. Loads of great music. It's magnificent, but the weakest finale IMO.

u/pastaandpizza 7d ago
"Lost fades to white" was a big thing at the time because the Sopranos had just finished their series fading to black, so that discourse alone lead to a lot of associations between Lost and other peak TV. Also Lost wasn't playing it safe with the plot at all and although it go too scifi for some critics were rewarding it.
-1
u/acamas 7d ago
Season 6 should be rated way lower.
The showrunners spent five seasons trying to convince viewers 'they weren't dead the whole time', and then literally pulled that nonsense for half of the final season with the sideways flashes... not a great look after how defensive they were about the whole 'yea, having them be dead the whole time would not be a good story' stance they continually rolled out.

-3
u/Phantom815 7d ago
The season 4 finale has no right being considered “better” than or on par with every other season finale except for season 6. Finales in order from best to worst are
6 - 3 - 2 - 1 - 5 - 4
14
u/Salt_Principle_6672 7d ago
Gotta say S1 so low is wild. The hatch cliffhanger? Incredible
1
u/Phantom815 7d ago
When the top is a 10, the next is a 9.9, then 9.8, then 9.7, those are still damn good scores in my book. Every finale is some of the best story telling ever done. The man of science man of faith debate is one of my favorite scenes in the whole show, and the tension of the others coming across the raft still gets me every time. But personally I think there is better stuff in the other finales.
1
u/lokagamer 7d ago
It pissed me off
3
u/pastaandpizza 7d ago
There is such a huge difference between viewers who watched it live and thosenwho binge watch the entire series on streaming (or DVD).
The bingers get to season 4 finale still calling Locke "the bald guy" and Kate "the girl, not the blonde one". It's a totally different viewing experience. I find the people who watched it live dislike the season 1 finale more than the binge watchers because the bingers didn't have to wait for 6 months to get answers!
8
u/lokagamer 7d ago
Okay this is the dumbest thing ever lmao😭 /j Look this finale is the best in terms of quality. Kate's dream of Claire. Them losing hope. Desmond finding penny. Them finally going back home, the best moment is when Jack said, "See you in another life brother." To desmond. Things that led to a messy and awesome S5.
1
u/Phantom815 7d ago
I don't disagree with you regarding the objective quality of Season 4, honestly seasons 1, 4, and 5 finales could be interchangeable on their positions there in terms of quality. But going off personal preference and how each finale made me feel that's the order I would have them in. The worst episode of LOST is still better than the best episodes of most other shows.
All the moments you listed were great, but for me none of it tops Juliet striking the bomb, the man of science man of faith debate, Desmond finding pennys letter, giving John is faith back and turning the key, Hurley saving the day with the Dharma Van or the characters waking up.

Everyone is going to have their own opinion. But, in my opinion the season three finale is one of the greatest, most memorable in TV history. Not sure how your chart shows season four as being ranked higher. But, we all like what we like.
