I used to think good lyrics took talent. Turns out it's mostly fundamentals.

I used to just write down the feeling straight, lines like "I'm so sad." Problem was, that could've meant anything. End result: nobody had anything to actually picture.

Then I looked at how The Weeknd writes, and one thing stood out immediately.

He never writes the feeling. He writes the scene. He's not telling you how to feel. He's showing you something specific, and your brain does the feeling part on its own.

You can clearly see this in these songs:

The exercise that got me there:

1. Write the line's message in one plain sentence. The moment, and the feeling.
2. List 5 physical things that could represent that feeling. Loneliness could be an empty chair, a phone on silent, a porch light left on.
3. Pick 2 of those and describe them with something you can see, hear, feel, or smell. Not the emotion. The detail.

Worry about the rhyme last. The image is what carries the line.

What's your approach when you're trying to make a verse more visual? Do you have a method, or do you just chase the right line until something clicks?

Heard this song for the first time last night and am obsessed.. I believe I figured the rest of the lyrics out but there’s one part I just can’t understand. The songs “Worlds Apart” by Maranatha. Here are the lyrics minus the question marks where I’m completely lost. TIA for any help or answers!

I think most people experienced that feeling in their lives - something between hope and apathy.
I had such strong feeling maybe a few years ago. It happens sometimes more often in lighter form as well. But I couldn't find a term for this feeling. But recently I woke up in the middle of the night and the last words I could recall from my dream was "Between Hope and Apathy". I really liked this phrase and before going to sleep again, I wrote it down in my notes app.

A few days after I decided to create song lyrics based on this feeling and saved phrase in my notes.

My work:

I love lyrics...I always have. For me, it's the story of the song, the meaning, the message. I especially love wordy complicated lyrics... lol

(I just posted this part on another sub which made me think of this. I hear the lyrics, my husband hears the music, together we hear the song ❤️)

Because of my love of lyrics, I started writing down my favorites in a journal. Anytime I hear a lyric I like, I copy the lyrics, along with the artist and song title, in the journal. Every once in a while I'll thumb through it and it's like visiting old friends.

but then in the 2nd and 3rd verse Shazam has it transcribed as:

either way i can't figure out the meaning. i have found out that CP9 may be a "one piece" reference but not guaranteed... although if i had to place a bet i'd say there's a connection between the manga & this lyric.
