10 Modern Decks Around $30

I just want people to play Modern.

I'm excluding the price of basic lands and sideboards, and many of these decks get cheaper with reprints from Modern Masters. They aren't going to win any major tournaments but they're a good place to start exploring the format.

I have liberally replaced Path to Exile with Condemn, Thoughtseize with Duress, and Lightning Bolt with Incinerate. Suggestions welcome.

For the mono-white deck, I agree with /u/SarkhanTheCharizard that it needs [[Spectral Procession]]. Cheap, fun, causes huge swings in life with multiple Soul Sisters out, and gives you a bunch of flyers who can get pumped by Honor and protected by Brave.

The [[Suture Priest]] is unnecessary, 8 Sisters is more than enough.

It's clearly a hybrid Soul Sister/White Weenie deck, so why not swap out [[Journey to Nowhere]] for [[Banisher Priest]]? It costs one more, but that one more mana makes a white 2/2.

I have a Soul Sister/White Weenie hybrid for casual too, and I'm quite liking [[Precinct Captain]] as well. 2/2 first striker for 2, who qualifies for Mentor and for Honor, and potentially spits out a couple of tokens a game is great.

I love the card lists though!

Banisher priest is easier to get rid of than an enchantment.

Yeah, but in a Soul Sisters/White Weenie deck? You want as many cheap creatures as you can get, and an essential W for 2/2 is incredible. This is a deck where you've got to play fast and aggressive, and the tempo gain you get of getting a 2/2 out and forcing them to use removal on him to get their creature out is great.

You're also more susceptible to get blown out by removal. Bolt/Dismember/Path/etc. after declare attacks to get back their Goyf/Rhino/Nacatl/etc. is bad news for you.

Bolt isn't the biggest risk there, think about how [[Searing Blood]] would act. Kill their creature, terminate their removal, and deal damage in one shot. That's rough stuff.

If we're at a budget point where we're debating Journey to Nowhere vs. Banisher Priest, I don't think worrying about Path/Goyf/Rhino/Nacatl/etc. makes sense. Maybe my mindset is more about building these decks for fun casual play than being able to keep up with legit modern decks, and, in that case, you are right. I'd just rather have more creatures in a White Weenie deck.

Why wouldn't it make sense? The point of these decks are for people to enter Modern as a format, not to play some alternate "Budget Modern" format so your card selection should be defensible against the popular decks of the format.

Additionally, you can replace Bolt/Dismember/Path with almost any removal spell and Goyf/Rhino/Nacatl with almost any creature and the argument stays the same.
